  • Johnny Marr and Chrissie Hynde played Hollywood Rock in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in January 1988 - two of the 11 or 12 gigs he played while in The Pretenders.
Malcolm Foster on bass, Blair Cunningham on drums and Rupert Black on keyboards. (Thanks to Peter!)

Johnny Marr is a hero. Truly amazing. He had 4 days to learn this whole set for the Pretenders.

But I love Mind Bomb and Dusk by The The, classic JM harmonica and guitar (Slow Emotion Replay, Helpline Operator notably). Thanks for posting this vid.

This is a great post and a great live track, Chrissie was a bit stupid to let Johnny go though - She should have tried harder to keep him. Johnny sounded just like the "Honeyman". He was also a fan of Jimmy Scott and influenced by him too. Also notice that Martin Chambers was replaced by Blair Cunningham from Haircut 100 during that period.

Johnny has played with so many of his friends/heroes, his time with The Pretenders was short, he just didn't look or sound comfortable with them. No soul. Next to The Smiths he only equalled his prowess with The The. Well, until his recent solo years.

He didn't have much time to prepare for this so he was struggling a little bit. A little hesitant but he played everything correctly. If he played more he would've been more comfortable and relaxed. By the end of the song he even added a little of his magic that wasn't on the record.
