- Johnny Marr and Chrissie Hynde played Hollywood Rock in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in January 1988 - two of the 11 or 12 gigs he played while in The Pretenders.
Malcolm Foster on bass, Blair Cunningham on drums and Rupert Black on keyboards. (Thanks to Peter!) Видеоклипы
Johnny Marr is a hero. Truly amazing. He had 4 days to learn this whole set for the Pretenders.
came for the Johnny Marr, stayed for the ridiculously in-the-pocket vocal performance from Chrissie Hynde - superb.
So, came for the Marr, stayed for the Hynde?
Johnny Marr can do no wrong. A great guitarist, from a great band.
My absolute favourite version of the song 👌 Chrissie and Johnny should perform again together ❤
June 2023 Glastonbury
His guitar was perfect for this band
That sound..... Johnny Marr.
Wow. First time I have seen this. Loved Pretenders and Johnny for a long long time.
Johnny is such a great fit. He always gets the picture of what the song is about and how it should feel. Amazing mesh of talent here.
Was lucky enough to have seen Johnny Marr with the Pretenders from the front row in Santa Barbara.
I saw the Pretenders at the Santa Barbara bowl many years ago but do not remember Marr, do you remember the year?
Jangle heaven.
Love Smiths and Pretenders.
Igor teixeira me too!
Chrissie @ Johnny Marr on one stage, A SLICE OF HEAVEN!!!!!!! sgl
Love how theres no holding back on this performance, he dropped the solo so nicely and she was really goin for it with her vocals right here
I believe Johnny made Chrissie blush!
Such good chemistry
I was there... amazing concert!
Alexandre Borges, I saw JM play with The Pretenders when they opened for U2 at the Coliseum in LA.
Me too!
This is def rare. I've never seen with Chrissie with a 12 string guitar either. Thanks soooo much for posting this. Yeah, I'd wished he stayed in the band too. He really fit the bill.
I'll dance to that song until my last breath.
Guys, the original guitarist wasn't JHS. It was Bill Bremner of Rockpile fame. And I love the way Johnny plays it. It's nice to hear him play lead once in a while.
Morrissey: 'Hmm.. I think I'm gonna cover Back on the chain gang'
Marr: u wot m8? 😏
I just learned of Marr's very brief stint in the Pretenders from a podcast a few days. That guy really got around.
Superb guitar sound..just like original.
steve hewitt better than for me personally
This song is so nostalgic........it`s nostalgia put to music really.....and I`ll listen to this beautiful song when I`m 90..................and still love it !!!!!
Wow! 👍
Johnny Marr did play on a Pretenders album. It's called "Packed!" he even co-wrote a song. It's called: "When Will I see You?"
I come back here about 2-3 times a day.
It would have been interesting if JM had contributed to a Pretenders album or two. Definitely would like to hear what it would have sounded like. But I love Mind Bomb and Dusk by The The, classic JM harmonica and guitar (Slow Emotion Replay, Helpline Operator notably). Thanks for posting this vid.
anth00000 *windows of the world
I was there...for Johnny Marr.
Mr Johnny Marr.
God! São Paulo-Brazil

Melhor guitarrista do mundo!
That voice..,
Johnny Marr, Guitar hero.
johnny was such a cutie
Johnny Fookin Mah
Johnny!!
🧡
Johnny should have joined permanently
That was excellent. Great quality 1988.
Brilliant! How great it is to see two of my teachers together -and on one of my favorite songs.
I wish I went to your school.
HOT Johny Marr is COOL.
I really with this lineup had more live footage and more studio recordings. Johnny Marr is the only one that came close to James Honeyman-Scott on lead guitar in this group.
Two legend in pop rock history!!!!
Johnny Marr sounds perfect on this song
I think Chrissie is playing Johnny’s Gibson 335 here. Nice.
jOHNNY mARR IS MY 4TH FAVORITE GUITAIST
Sterling Blake he's my 2nd favourite
Jonny Marr 🔥🎶🎸
i love chrissy my era
Johnny Marr Didn't actually play on the Packed! album. He just co-wrote one song. He also plays on "Windows of the world" video.
amazing !!!
♥️
Oh God, I adore this. Thank you.
This is a great post and a great live track, Chrissie was a bit stupid to let Johnny go though - She should have tried harder to keep him. Johnny sounded just like the "Honeyman". He was also a fan of Jimmy Scott and influenced by him too. Also notice that Martin Chambers was replaced by Blair Cunningham from Haircut 100 during that period.
Lindo!
Centro Reciclo de Atividades Artísticas crissie one of the best female rock simgers. Johnny Marr from
the Smiths . Great
I love this!
Oh wow ok Johnny was part of this one. Cool.
Great song and Hey JOHNNY FUCKIN MARR
Thankyou. Love it.x
Wow-rare pro-shot footage for sure and it sounds great, especially the ending. The lineup actually is: Chrissie Hynde (gtr/voc), Johnny Marr (gtr), Malcolm Foster (bass), Blair Cunningham (drums), Rupert Black (keyboards)
+Peter Braidi Thanks!
I'd kill to see that lineup play.
i love chrissy my era
Mr Johnny Marr.
Johnny Marr in The Pretenders (as superb as they are) seems like Jimmy Page being in AC/DC.
i love chrissy my era
Mr Johnny Marr.
Amo ❤❤
Marr maximo
Though he wrote the music for 'When Will I See You?, he didn't play on the album. Billy Bremner played guitar along with Chrissie.
love my billy. johnny did a good job.....f
I thought Johnny would kiss Hynde at the end of the song.
Marr is a flirt
Are there any full boots floating around of any of these shows? I'd love to hear him on some of the other songs.
Jimmy seems to come back to life 😭
Have to remember that Johnny was involved with Matt Johnson and The The at the same time. Matt won.
I saw The The with Marr 29yrs ago in Glasgow, Barrowlands. I'm going to see The The minus Marr with my same 2 friends. .... JHS was a superb guitarist too.
Eu estava lá.
👌👌👌👌👌👌👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
BONNAROO PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN!!!!
eu estaval´la
eu estava lá
Johnny fucking marr i love you and moz
Johnny has played with so many of his friends/heroes, his time with The Pretenders was short, he just didn't look or sound comfortable with them. No soul. Next to The Smiths he only equalled his prowess with The The. Well, until his recent solo years.
Exactly-Many hit singles and albums with Electronic-They first formed in 1988 and split in 1999
"he just didn't look or sound comfortable with them."
Judging by this video, he did look more than comfortable.
@@leonardotube you can tell he hasn’t had much time to rehearse - the main riff and some of the fills are a little hesitant. It wasn’t lack of ability just lack of time to prepare.
mozza for pm,your a star mate
Is there any bootlegs of this show????????
Sally Hawkins in the biopic.
I💎💎N💯S🌟🌟U🎯P🥇🥇E🎯🎯R😍😍Á🤩🤩V🌿🌿EI🎇🎇S❣️❣️
I thought it was Suedehead for a minute! doh
😂
I'd give anything for one. Really.
this was a gap filler for Marr after The Smiths - it was never meant as a full time slot - he's not a session player - he played with lots of bands & formed Electronic with New Order's frontman & recorded 2 great albums
We're ignoring the third?
Just great. Bit heavy on the chorus. It was the fashion of the day.
Is that an Aria bass?
If he only played a few shows, why was such a big deal made about it in Rolling Stone etc. back then?
True...they sort of look alot, too. Better than staring Morrissey in the eye, I bet.
After spending the first half of the decade putting up with Morrissey's bullshit a stint with The Pretenders and The The must have ben like being on holiday.
Funny how Morrissey covered this song
Un Johnny Marr sin vida. Sin ubicación, sin inspiración... THE SMITHS ERA SU TALLER ARTÍSTICO
He didn't have much time to prepare for this so he was struggling a little bit. A little hesitant but he played everything correctly. If he played more he would've been more comfortable and relaxed. By the end of the song he even added a little of his magic that wasn't on the record.
honeyman scott was beter and of course he wood be ,wouldnt he.
Stop trying to make me watch 4 adverts before a grainy VHS rip. RUclips you are not television and never will be. Is there so little money in selling personal data these days or are
you just the ABC of greed?
Marr is out of tune 🤷🏽♂️
bad riff
I dislike this song with a Fender on lead...
Zakdayak Johnny Marr plays with a ton of chorus and other effects... JHS played a pretty clean telecaster sound...
please stop that annoying guitar diva .........
boring
Sure you are.
Johnny Marr did play on a Pretenders album. It's called "Packed!" he even co-wrote a song. It's called: "When Will I see You?"
