Bilmore House in Asheville, NC, built by George Vanderbilt who was the grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, is still standing and thriving since it was first opened to friends and family in 1895. It's also still owned and operated by the family. It's a beautiful location and a must-see, if you like sprawling estates.
These are the stories you don't hear about the extremely wealthy families of America making their fortune: wicked, wicked, wicked, wicked! However, I will say Anderson is a stand-up guy and always the gentleman!
MOST OF THEM SO CALLED HIGH SOCIETY MADE THEIR MONEY DOING DIRTY DEEDS, MY FAMILY MADE IT IN THE MEDICAL FIELD AND THEY LOST AT ALL JUST LIKE ANY OTHER SO CALL HIGH SOCIETY FAMILY. EDUCATION IS THE KEY TO KEEP SOME OF IT. NOTHING MATERIALISTIC LOST FOREVER.
Fascinating stories of the first American families of wealth. Calling them shady, however, is a bit insulting. They were working hard within the system they were given. They were first American entrepreneurs. It is absolutely amazing that with their hard work and a business sense they created the empires that they did.
Anderson Cooper is still part of NYC's high society and I'm sure he has loads of connections, invites to exclusive gatherings and is part of a certain set; Gloria's boy in other words.I would like to read the books.
There was a Vanderbilt estate in the town where I grew up. It was sold not too long ago, I'm not sure what they're going to do with it. It was abandoned for years, I'm sure the local kids looted it. Kind of sad. I think it's been refurbished over the years. It was called elm Court in Lenox mass. You can find photos of it on line. I hope to read Anderson's book, I love that type of history. I think I knew at one point that John Jacob Astor made the bulk of his money in the fur trade, but I had forgotten. Cool history.
I understand that everyone has their own views and experiences, but it is unfair to make sweeping generalisations about people in poverty. Poverty does not imply a lack of intelligence or understanding, and just because financial challenges may limit certain resources and opportunities does not mean that people in poverty are incapable of understanding other issues.
I love Anderson Cooper, but I find it hard to believe he’s not gonna leave his children a good chunk of change . But then again maybe he won’t I don’t know
@cbsmornings This was an unnecessary story where the time could've been dedicated to any other topic. This why mainstream media is out of touch: glorifying boring oligarch history by its already overexposed descendant? How about an unknown author? or artist? or someone struggling. Do better.
Instead of focusing on what we think is wrong with others, we should try to understand and address the underlying issues and work towards creating a more inclusive and just society for all. This requires open-mindedness, constructive dialogue and a willingness to listen to different perspectives.
which makes it even more interesting because other obscure authors write books about prominent figures in society. At least he met Brooke Astor in the flesh.
@@janejustin1788 Sorry you feel that way, but I don't. Mr. Cooper was born into privilege on his mother's side, but he forged his own path and followed his passion into journalism. It was many years later that I discovered that Gloria Vanderbilt was his mother.

Anderson Cooper has done well because he is smart and he works non stop. He has been a war correspondent, a journalist, and a reporter and went through the ranks to get to where he is today. A family name can open doors, but it can not make a career. Intelligence and Talent made his career. Jealous much?
My review of Anderson Cooper. He is a famous news presenter and journalist who has a wide influence in the media world. Though he was born in a wealthy family, he has achieved success in the news industry through his talent and hard work.
Uh, his last name is Cooper. Sure, his upbringing gave him a solid education, but he built the rest through hard work. It was years before most people knew he had anything to do with the Vanderbilt family.

Anderson has such a wholesome outlook on life. I’m certain he is an excellent father.

He's an outstanding human being in general. You never hear him mention his multimillionaire status either, unlike someone else we know.
