- Hi All,
in this woodturning project I'm experimenting with a brass epoxy inlay, I start with trying ca glue but then switch to epoxy resin. It's quite a journey but as they say every day is a learning day.
This woodturning channel, explores the uses of wood when combined with resin, epoxy, to make woodturning projects, that are easy and can be classed as art. A lot of the wood turning projects I make can be completed by the beginner through to the more experienced wood turner. If you have any ideas for artwork, wood inlays, epoxy projects please get in touch. Collaborations are always welcomes.

Mike, I like to look back and watch the progression of a fine career. Well done! You have had ab interesting journey. It reminds me of the work I used to do when I was about your age. Brings back wonderful memories…. Thank you.
Thanks Jonny, I have learned so much since starting this channel and loved every second 😃
I can imagine the smell of the wood shavings must be amazing… reminds me so much of my grandads workshop
Yeah, but some woods smell better than others! 😅
Looks great to me the imperfections just shows that it was hand made good job stay safe👍👍👍👍
Thanks, appreciate that from a fellow turner
Honestly, even with all the trial and error on this one, the brass turned out to be a subtle crescent moon. You could have even put a little star in the center. lol (You could always try an intentional crescent some day. 😄)
I did actually think that at the time, thanks for reminding me 😃
@@MikeHolton Wonderful! You're very welcome, good sir! :D
Still came out nice. There is definitely promise in metal powders in resin. I like the brass sheen on that.
Thanks, yeah, they are a lot of fun to do but lots of work needed.
Another little beauty. Too bad I can't make stuff like that.
I bet you could if you tried 😃
"Brass you idiot!" had me laughing out loud 😂
I love the finish and the crescent moon effect, albeit unintentional. Personally, I don't think it needs any additions. Perfect in its imperfection.
Thanks Mike, as always, loved the video
Thanks Fiona, I do occasionally have issues with words which I think comes from my dyslexia, happy to blame anything lol 😂
@@MikeHolton you're all good 😊
Love your work! this channel will pick up, just keep doing what you are doing! :)
Thanks! That means a lot to me 🙏
@@MikeHolton you’re welcome! I’ve only put 2&2 together with your channel realising you’re the deathly hallows guy! Subbed! And currently binging my way through your collection, as opposed to working 😃
@@withoutdoors5230 🤣Enjoy. I'll try to publish two new videos each week to help you keep up your productive lifestyle 😁
Nice work Mike!
Thanks Michael 😌
I got another idea, looking at those amazing lengths of curly wood chips...
What if you took a bunch of the most shapely peelings, soaked different groups in different dyes, dried them, and then set them like a fill or inlay with a clear or semitransparent resin or epoxy? Maybe add a little pearlized powder or metal. You could make a rainbow like birthday confetti, or warm hues like autumn leaves, or cool colors and green like spring, etc. Heck, you could use actual leaves, twigs, dried flowers or petals, etc.
That's not a bad idea, thanks. I'm not a great fan of using epoxy but this idea does appeal 😃
i imagine the little star shaped inlay of the same brass epoxy in that place on the rim, where is no brass. it seems to me, it can give the impression that it was planned so.
anyway it is a wonderful piece, congrats, Mike
Thanks Irene, I would love to say it was planned 😊
Sorry just got what you meant 😃, yes that would have been a great idea which I will store away for next time.
Great bowl mike.
I think the tamping down of the brass was the problem. Next time tryfilling brass in 2 or 3 goes with brass filings in between like sprague from Canada..
Brass finished looked fantastic. You could even try a little bright yellow dye in with brass and epoxy to enhance brass look.
Yes I think you're right, I will be trying again, thanks
Very nice inlay!
It was a struggle but got there in the end
I first saw the method with CA on Sprague woodturning channel. He only partially fills the saturates it with thin CA until he gets it full. The epoxy method seems to work well for you. 👍
Thanks, yes I've seen Jim do the same using starbond. Must try and get some to see if there is a difference.
Nice save
Lol thanks 🙂, could have gone way worse.
Boa tarde MAIS obra de arte LINDA
Obrigado Ester
Wow that copper really makes the bowl pop. Pity it was such a pain in the brass to do.
Haha I see what you did there 😂
ca glue first, add powder, let it set up, shake out the excess. and repeat. its like the baking soda trick. might be worth a try
Never thought of doing it that way although it may get very messy 😁
@@MikeHolton it will get messy
@@laughlan22 🤣
"Brass you idiot!" Lol! I really like the feature, not one you could easily do on purpose.
Haha thanks Rachel, I have figured out how to do it on purpose 😀
🤗
Indeed! The inlay process was a chore but great learning experience.
I don't know why my 5 minute epoxy didn't get clear and shiny like yours?!
You need to sand to a high grit or use an abrasive paste, then put polish over the top.
@@MikeHolton 400 grit isn't high enough?
@@jimmoorepa Not with epoxy, try using an abrasive paste this takes the finish up to about 800-1000, you apply it after sealing.
