Macbeth: The Real King Behind Shakespeare's Tragedy | The Real Macbeth | Chronicle

  • Tony Robinson takes a look at the facts behind the myth of Shakespeare's Macbeth, and finds a quite different character and story to that created by the 'Bard of Avon'. The original and real King Macbeth lived in the 11th century and reigned from 1040 to 1057.
    The real Scottish king Macbeth was a far cry from the great Shakespearean villain, but his story was even more fascinating. He was not the vicious, jealous, superstitious murderer Shakespeare painted, but he took a path to the throne that was just as bloody, as The Real Macbeth reveals.

    According to the Irish annals, Macbeth left a son named Ferchar Og who fled to Ireland and left descendants who returned to Argyll, Scotland during the reign of King Alexander I. The Irish annals list certain Scottish clan chiefs as the representatives of Macbeth's line, namely the Chiefs of Clan Aedh [Mackay of Strathnaver], Clan Gregor [MacGregor of Glen Orchy], and Clan Fionguin [Mackinnon of Griban]. DNA samples taken from the descendants of these chiefs reveal that they share a common male line ancestor within 30 generations which places this ancestor within the 11th century.

      Another of the Clan Mackay origin stories is that it’s founded by Gruoch’s (Lady Macbeth) granddaughter. She had no known children with Macbeth, the father of her children was her first husband.

    • @clivebanks893
      @clivebanks893 2 года назад +1

      @@TamariMcKay Macbeth did have children, either by Gruoch, or by another wife. Queen Gruoch's son by her first husband, Lulach succeeded Macbeth as king in August 1057 and was crowned at Scone in September. Gruoch's husband was a cousin of Macbeth, she was the senior surviving representative of the Scottish Royal House of Alpin, being the grand daughter of Kenneth III. This is why Macbeth was succeeded by Lulach and not one of his own sons. Lulach was ambushed and slain at Essie in Strathbogie on 17 March 1058 by Malcolm, son of Duncan. The contemporary Annals of Tighernac list Macbeth's death AFTER that of Lulach which suggests that Macbeth abdicated the Throne to Lulach after his defeat at Lumphanan in 1057 during which he may have been wounded. Macbeth was ambushed and slain by Malcolm sometime after March 1058. There was an interregnum of 5 weeks between the killing of Lulach and the enthronement of Malcolm III during which Malcolm had to come to terms with the Mormaers of Scotland, the provincial earls of Scotland many of whom did not support Malcolm. King Lulach married Fionghuala of Angus, and had a son named MalSnechta, who was later forced into a monastery by Malcolm III. Lulach also had a daughter who's name is sometimes given as "Tul". She married her cousin, Aedh, Mormaer of Ross, who may have been a grandson of Macbeth. Aedh came to terms with Malcolm, and was made Earl of Moray by him. Their male line descendants were known as the "MacEths', or MacAedhs. This line continued to claim the Scottish Throne until 1215 when Kenneth MacAedh was killed. His son Aedh, is named by the Blackcastle Manuscript as the founder of Clan Aedh or Mackay. The Mackay chiefs held the estate of Strathnaver in Sutherland until 1829 when it was sold by Eric, 9th Lord Reay, Chief of Clan Aedh. His representative today is Aeneas Mackay, 15th Lord Reay, 28th/29th Chief of your clan. He is a direct descendant of King Lulach's daughter by her marriage to her cousin Aedh of Ross.

    Cinaed mac Alpin first King of Scots (Picts / Alba) 14 Generations down to Malcolm ll, his daughter Bethoc, married Crinan of Dunbar. His son Duncan l killed by Mcbeth army in battle in 1045 along with Crinan. From Crinan is the line of Earls of Dunbar, our family link to the clans of Scotland. Damn you Mcbeth, I could have been King ... at a wee stretch.

    • @clivebanks893

      Steve Arcus. The legitimate male line of King Duncan's family died with King Alexander III in 1286, but two illegitimate male lines survive today, represented by Struan Robertson, Chief of Clan Donncaidh, a descendant of Maelmuir, Earl of Atholl, younger son of King Duncan I, while Dunbar of Mochrum, Chief of Clan Dunbar, is descended from the Earls of Dunbar, who descend from Maldred, Lord of Allerdale, a younger brother of King Duncan. The male line of the family of King Duncan was a branch of the Cinel Gulban, St. Columba's family, a branch of the Irish royal Ui Neill dynasty. The mother of Duncan was Princess Bethaig, eldest daughter of King Malcolm II, the mother of Macbeth was Princess Donada, a younger daughter of Malcolm II, so Macbeth and Duncan were first cousins. The male line of Macbeth's family claimed descent from the Kings of Dalriada.

    In "Till Birnam' Woods shall come to Dunsinane" the Shakespearean pentameter stresses the fifth syllable, "DUN.sinane", whereas the local pronunciation is "Dun.SIN'n". Shakespeare did the Welsh accent very well; but I suspect he could not find an actor to do Scots. Am I wrong?

    • @pricklypear7516
      @pricklypear7516 2 года назад +2

      You're probably wrong. Historical verisimilitude wasn't much of a priority for Shakespeare, so I rather doubt that he'd have been overly concerned about linguistic niceties. What's more, to most Londoners, King James habits, accent included, would have been seen as barbaric. It was the first play Shakespeare had written since the death of Elizabeth, so he was basically sucking up to the monarch with a Scottish play, a bad leading female, witches, and noble Banquo's son Fleance escaping the assasins to continue the line that ultimately led to James himself. But, as with the awful stuff thrown into the witches' brew, Shakespeare was not at all averse to the occasional inside joke. (Hopefully, VERY "inside.") And the demands of rhythm would most likely have trumped any other consideration anyway.
