Not sure what the technical name for it, or what MSU calls it, but at one of my high schools years ago, where they run the spread, they had a route called "under Sam over Mike". Meaning, you begin your route shallow to be under the Sam backers position, then get depth until you're behind the Mike backer This Y-cross route reminds a lot of that
This is a perfect passing scheme for Jalen Hurts. Crossing routes, check downs with mesh routes and option routes. it will force Jalen to seek out his third and fourth options and not be one dimensional and predictable. (focusing on AJ Brown).
As a former offensive lineman I feel like I may be able to help with what happened on the play at 11:22 and where it broke down. Against an odd man front most teams will have a "slide" side with zone blocking on the frontside, and man blocking on the backside. This means that on the front side everyone has a gap: the center has the A gap, the guard the "B" gap and tackle in the "C" gap. On the backside it gets a little more complicated: if you have a man lined up opposite you, that's who you have, but if you don't have a man opposite, you have to figure out who to help, which varies based on what the defense does. Which side is the frontside and which is the backside depends on the center's call. Since there are 3 lineman going to the slide side, you want to call the protection to whichever side you think pressure might come from. On this play LSU lines up in a 3 man front with a linebacker walked up to the LOS, and shows heavy pressure from the right. My guess is that they were trying to induce a "right" protection call from the MSU offensive line, and it works. But after the snap, the LSU dline slants to the right, and the linebackers loop around to the backside! Now the MSU oline has 3 people blocking frontside, and only 2 to block (56 ends up blocking air). Meanwhile, LSU has 3 on the backside to MSU's 2! On top of that, 67 is late recognizing the loop, and they end up doubling the defensive end, allowing two rushers to come free.
JT, do you think on that sluggo throw on the "eye" that he just didn't see the backer cause he blended with the logo? That player does NOT look open w the LB getting that much depth. Shoulda been a pick, lol!
The second play actually wasn't the right read if I'm being honest. It was a heck of a throw, don't get me wrong, but I think that it's getting intercepted 9 times out of 10. You notice that he is looking to the left the whole time and that he should've thrown to the corner down on the right - wide open.
In case you’ve never seen this article about Mike Leach’s famous QB meetings: 247sports.com/college/washington-state/Article/Washington-State-Cougars-football-2019-The-Athletic-134483097/
Why would you not take shots to the 1 on the field side? There is nothing but real estate over there. All the room in the world to stack that DB and bend that go rout to the back pylon.
In typical Leach fashion, they follow that up with a ridiculous loss to a nothing Arkansas team. Most overrated coach in history. Four losing seasons in eight years at Washington State, including his last year. Never won a league championship or finished in the top ten in 20 years. Big mouth who had some entertaining lines about locking Craig James' kid in a dark room a decade ago then was canned because Texas Tech didn't want to pay his ridiculous salary. Left Washington State a mess. He's Charlie Weis, only funnier.
Coach Leach was such a legend.
This is the first college game I've ever watched and my god I wasn't disappointed.
The siren! The zero! Your welcome! Killing me! Love it!
Razorback alum here, makes me love this video all the more.

Love your stuff bro. I love air raid system. Played in it in HS. Wish I could’ve played for Leach.

Yeah this was a big win for The Pirate!

Being a former NFL QB with a lot of contacts has its perks

Arkansas is better than people thought. They have weapons that were never utilized correctly.
wsu just had two back to back winning seasons. They aren’t making the playoffs any time soon but they’re far from a mess
