- This Foster Bros 16” hog splitter was a lot of work but it came together beautifully! I’m so excited to be able to preserve this awesome piece.
Huge thanks to Brett C for trusting with this piece. I’m truly grateful!

For my household, is a hog splitter totally unreasonable? Yes. Undoubtedly. Do I still need one? YOU G-D RIGHT I DO!
Best comment ever!! Haha. I love it!!
Perfect comment!! Love it 👍🏻😁@@RedBeard_KNT
What is a hog splitter
It’s an old butcher’s tool/cleaver, used to split the vertebrae through pure mass and weight
When you were doing the handle and you said it'll turn amber, I pictured something way different. That handle is amazing. Probably the best I've ever seen.
Thank you so much and thanks for watching! 😁
That handle! It was like watching The Sand Lot. Lotiining and oiling and lotioning....... Beautiful finish and great project
Thanks, I definitely had fun with that part! 😁
I really like the appearance of the handle. I think that a nice leather sheath could both make it safer to handle and to preserve the blade.
I’ve considered that and might try that next time!
Nicely done. I do love these types of restoration videos.
I’m glad you liked it! Thanks for watching!! 😁
Paint strip wheels are awesome ...
They absolutely are!!
that is beautiful.. thanks for sharing great job and great video and the finish you used on it looked amazing as well.. i have restored some cleavers and i also carve my art on them too and i am going to try that finish thank you
Thank you so much! Glad I’ve inspired you to try something different!! 😁
I recommend trying that tape+super glue trick a little bit modified. First tape both surfaces and then apply super on one tape and super glue activator on the other and then press them together.
Dries instantly and holds parts together extremely well.
Won't leave any residue or rip wood when taken off.
I might give that a try. Thanks!!
Dope AF results, @RedBeard_KNT! I can see why the customer would be raving about this!!
Thank you so much! Glad you liked it and thanks for watching! 😁
Nice work, brother..... subscribed.

@@RedBeard_KNT Your very welcome
Love it mate 👌😎 new subscriber from Australia 🇦🇺
Awesome! Thanks for watching and supporting! 😁
Beautiful! It has quite the look about it. Friction oil gave a great result.
Thanks for checking out the video. I love how it turned out! 😁
Stay warm in Gulfport. We are inspecting for 2-4 inches of snow. I'm in Hattiesburg
Stay warm! It's been pretty chilly here in the shop. Lol
how did the inspection go?
@massimothetrog7111 1 1/2 inches here where I live . North of Hattiesburg
@@massimothetrog7111 I’m not sure what you mean?
@RedBeard_KNT post says inspecting for 2-4 inches of snow. 😁
Watched, subscribed, amazed, thank you.
Awesome, thank you!
Looks amazing!!!
Thank you so much! Glad you liked it!
Great job😊
Thanks man! 😁
Great video, good tip on saving the old handle for needed info. Nice finish on the handle, what was the strength of the Nitric Acid? If it is an old secret formula I will not ask you for it, just curious
It’s 70% pure nitric acid. 1-4 with water and as much iron as it will eat.
Very cool build. That maple really came to life. I have never messed with that solution but I am definitely interested in trying now. I have a couple of hickory handles kicking around that have some curl or tiger striped figure to them.
Thanks dude, and you definitely need to try it!
I used to work as a metal polisher. The tangled belts drove me nuts. We used old farm horse shoes hung over the loop while they're stuck on a simple rod above.
That’s interesting, I’ll have to try that!
I found one at the dump along with a bunch of other tools. Pretty awesome looking
Nice find! You got lucky!
Beautiful and it would look even better with a leather holster . 👍
Thanks for the suggestion, maybe next time. Thanks for watching! 😁
That's cool , and it's not a fake restoration, even better
I appreciate that you recognize that. Thank you and thanks for watching!! 😁
@RedBeard_KNT np ,I have never seen a hog knife before good video
@@Overlooked1 yeah they don’t come around too after.
The only real problem I see, is that you didn't send it to me. I have had a hog splitter blade for years, waiting on me to get myself into gear. That maple is gorgeous and I'm glad you left the character on the blade. I've seen too many people try to polish it up and just end up losing what markings are there. Great project and outcome.
I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching! 😁
Absolute master craftsman
Thanks brother!!!
Loving the longer video
Thanks dude!
You are the man!! That thing is bad ass!! Thank you!! 😎😁
Thanks dude, glad you enjoyed it!
Looks awesome!
Thanks brother!
Dude thanks for that painters tape glue trick! Also now I need a hog splitter to restore 😅
Haha, it really is a game changer! Thanks for watching!!
Nice splitter and black rose hat
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Loving the "safety" Crocs
Absolutely! Thanks! 😊

Thanks dude! I had a blast doing this one.

Thanks 👍 brother!!!
toute un projet, copain...bravo
Thanks so much!
I didn't know it till now but i need a hog splitter.... 👍
Right! It’s kind of a thing! 😏
Very nice! I wonder how many hogs that thing split?..... If that steel could only talk.....
If only! Thanks for watching!
Brilliant!
Thanks so much!
Awesome!
Thanks dude!

I may not know art, but I know what I like.
I dig it too.
Damn, i was hoping, you were going to chop a hog with it, Hoo-Yah Shipmate
Haha. I mean, it would been possible if it weren’t a commission. 😏
wow love it
Thank you!!
I think I would have made a leather sheath for that blade
The thought did cross my mind. 😊
Almost too pretty to use, but that’s what for so man that would looks awesome. Good job. Good job.
Thanks, it's all about the function and the form! 😁
Oh, I think it just needed some Harbulary batteries.
I'm just up in Greene co
Sweet man! Thanks for watching!! 😁
good job brautiful
Thanks for checking it out man! 😁
New to your channel, enjoyed it alot. But Sir please use a mask
Thanks for the tip, and thanks for watching!! 😁
Why not boil it to convert the rust like bluing old firearms?
Good question, but it was just surface rust.
it's sad really 40 years ago a good sized hog splitter could be found for 30 or 40 bucks now they start around 500 and one like yours can go for over 2000 bucks in good condition all just so some city boy can hang it on his wall . I lost mine out the back of my truck after a job breaking down a mess of wild hogs after a hunt it didn't fall out the bed it sprouted legs and ran off along with a tool box .
Dang. I’m sorry to hear that. Thanks for watching!
Yeah but you could’ve avoided the whole super glue it painters tape step by just drilling the holes before splitting and that would’ve save time
I appreciate the tip, and I have done that before but that invites alignment issues at the front and back of the scales. But if it works for you, that’s great man. Everyone has their process, this one is mine.
@@RedBeard_KNT yah I get that
I have had some splinter as the drill bit exited the back, so I can see why you do it that way. My project was for myself and it still bugs me when I use that knife.
1200 dollars
I’m not sure what that means?
