Huge fan of John Legend! I love when artist are bold enough to cover such a song because it keeps the music alive and introduces the new generation to the Queen, Nina Simone. For me, I liked his version but my #1 will always be Nina Simone. Her rendition, you can truly hear not only the pain but the struggle of finally getting to freedom; that final exhale. Times were much different during her time, and you can hear that in her voice. Even as she sings of freedom; in her voice it sounds as if that is just a fantasy that she can only “think of having.” John Legends version seem to be a true reality; truly content, complete and happy. BOTH are great in different unique ways but my fav, will always be Nina! Hats off to John Legend! He did that nicely.
