His specific sexuality is of no real importance especially given the context that sexuality, especially male sexuality, was much more fluid in Ancient Greece. However, Achilles and Patroclus were lovers. Patroclus, who was in no way a warrior and really had no business following Achilles, followed him when he left for the Trojan War as they couldn’t bear behind parted. Patroclus had even put on Achilles’ armor and went into battle pretending to be him knowing he had no skills, just for Achilles. @@damnthisisalongname_4764One of Agamemnon's rewards to Achilles in order to get him back to battle was an oath saying that Agamemnon has never got to the couch of Bryseis as a man and woman would. Don't get me wrong,it is very much plausible that Achilles and Patroclus were lovers, but Achilles had multiple relationships with women,a son,and Bryseis even says that Patroclus had promised her to convince Achilles to marry Bryseis. So,Achilles was at best bi-sexual.

    • @jlhn
      @jlhn 5 месяцев назад +7

      @@soumyadeepchatterjee1262
I've read papers on this lmao
So Achilles didn’t care about Briseis because she cared for her; she cared for Briseis because it was a prize given to him by the army as an acknowledgement of his ability on the battlefield.
Agamemnon stating that he didn't lay with Briseis would be the equivalent of saying "yes, I took your underwear, but I didn’t use it"
You have to understand that for Achilles and Agamemnon women were nothing more than things to use. Achilles even says that he wishes that Briseis had died so nothing would’ve happened to Patroclus.
Now, Patroclus promising Briseis to marry her to Achilles was a lie, because 1. Achilles, a prince, obviously wasn't going to marry a slave, and 2. Achilles wasn't going to return from the war anyway.
And you have to remember that back then a woman couldn't live on their own, they needed to have support either from their family, or from their husband. So Patroclus telling to Briseis that she was going to marry Achilles, was basically him saying that she was going to get her freedom and her social status back. It wasn't because there existed any love between Briseis and Achilles.
And you also have to remember that back then having a kid wasn't a matter of love, it was something that people HAD to do. So even if Achilles only liked men, he'd still had kids because it was expected of him.

Song Of Achilles was written in the 21st century, it's a gay fanfiction. Achilles had a son named Neoptolemus with a princess who Patroclus wanted named Deidamia and may have had a second named Oneiros. Achilles stopped fighting because his woman, Briseis was taken away. This is so well known it was even in the Troy movie. You'd know this if you actually read the sources instead of mindlessly portray everyone as the worst sexuality.
Gay lovers be like yeah that guy known to be promiscuous with women and who has multiple children is super gay because he has a close relationship with a man, it's pathetic. Achilles wasn't gay or even close to it, the gayest thing he did was dress up like a woman so he wouldn't have to go to Troy and he got found out by Odysseus.

"Let them all perish, all the Trojans, and yes all the Achaens too, except we two."
Yeah you're right, wearing a dress is gayer.
The argument is that Alexander was gay for Patroclus not that he was gay I'm general, he was probably bi.
Even Plato thought they were gay and he lived much closer to their time and shared the culture of the writers of the iliad. There's at the very least a very good argument to be made, it's certainly not something modern gay people just pulled out of nowhere.

Completely ignoring that other Greek historians from that time like xenaphon disagreed with Plato on that take. Also a main reason why this is in collective thought to this day is because a lady wrote a book that had a gay storyline for Achilles because of what she read from Plato. I believe it is Hermes (or Apollo) who comment that Achilles grief goes beyond that of a man who lost a father, brother or son. Patroclus is the closest person to Achilles, the one he loves the most, the only one whose death could literally make him stop wanting to live.
He goes to his death, not for glory, but to avenge Patroclus, knowing that, if Hector falls, Achilles will soon follow.
Did they have sex? Maybe, who cares. They loved each other, just about as much as two people can love each other.

Ah yes, Achilles liked Brises so much, he even said that he didn’t care if Agamemnon "laid with her"
"All the other prizes of honor he gave the great men and the princes are held fast by them, but from me alone of all the Achaians he has taken and keeps the bride of my heart. Let him lie beside her
and be happy." (Lattimore's translation of the Iliad)
And he also said that he wished Briseis had died:
"I wish Artemis had killed her beside the ships with an arrow on that day when I destroyed Lyrnessos and took her."
In fact, Achilles liked her so much, and Patroclus and him were the straightest friends ever, that later Achilles can't sleep, thinking of Patroclus' "manhood":
"only Achilleus wept still as he remembered his beloved companion, nor did sleep who subdues all come over him, but he tossed from one side to the other in longing for Patroklos, for his manhood and his great strength"
And even Achilles' mom had to remind him that being with a woman is good actually:
"My child, how long will you go on eating your heart out in sorrowand lamentation, and remember neither your food nor going to bed? It is a good thing even to lie with a woman in love."
      Very straight of him

@@story.reborn that may be... there really is no evidence that he went for guys in a romantic manner. Maybe he was asexual, or only saw women as a distraction, or was so vain he saw no woman worthy of him.... I find it funny that if a guy goes for women, he is automatically a grape-ist... but if he just has no interest because he chooses to focus his energy on personal pursuits he is automatically gay... what does it really matter what flavor his palette sought? That has to be the least interesting thing about any person in this world.
