That little spruce looks like it has some subtle movement at the base, and branch structure already starting - it wants to be a Mame!! It will be so exciting watch this transition into one of your mini pots, eventually.

Thanks. I have a hard time not digging those volunteers up and potting them along. I get some nice trees that way and sometimes a big surprise! Last year I scored 3 Pagoda dogwood, 1 western redbud, 4 scotts pines and a Blood Good japanese maple. They aren't giants but they could be! Glad to see the ideas for the one-sided elm. I have run into that more than I have the "good" root spreads. Thanks.
I love that you bring focus to these younger trees. I’m finding it more and more rewarding when I start my trees from seed, or find a tree pop up in my yard and watch them develop over the years, getting to learn the quirks from each species. Also if I make a mistake on a young tree it’s a bit easier to take then by learning from mistakes on old trees. 😊

It suits well the current repotting season. What are the pros and cons of bonsai soil reuse? It would be nice to hear what is your opinion on this topic. I find a very little information about it. Thanks in advance.
Contamination from bad microbes and unwanted weeds is the biggest downside…I think. You can let your soil dry and bake/sterilize it in an oven. Or a less perfect(and cheaper) way I prefer. Is after drying, putting your soil on a tarp or plastic and let it get hot in the sun(on a hot summer day) afterwords you can always re-sift your soil. Curious on Nigel’s thought on this!
My gut tells me that a lot depends on the age of the older soil...if it's from a planting that's more than a year old, I personally wouldn't reuse it...
The natural soil for us, in the east Bay Area (California), is more tough clay than this. My dad once had to do some irrigation work in our yard and said he had to dig through pure clay.

That is good info - the small trees on a tray of sand - will definitely do that - 🙂🙃

My glassed in sunroom has too much of a temperature swing in the winter. Otherwise, I'd have it packed with trees..

I have never seal the root cuts, they seem to heal well without it.
Hopefully all will go well, roots do seem to heal well without cut paste!
Do you re use the soil coming out of the pots Nigel?
Generally I don't reuse soil for my bonsai. The old soil goes into the garden!
You could have made a few more pots with all the clay you've raked out of the roots! Lol
