I'm one of many many Argentines that even though cheered and adored Diego in '86 and '90, is immensely proud that Lionel is the one that represents the best of us now. I'm a father, and I want my kids to see what true sportsmanship is at the highest level represented by someone that is an example both in the field and outside of it. Unfortunately, as good as Diego was in the game, he was Dr Jekyll in it and Mr Hyde outside of it.
it takes a team and someone beyond the genius description and driven by some sort of external factor. Maradona had Valdano, Burruchaga, Bilardo's tactics (he was a great tactician)... And the whole issue with the war. Messi had Di Maria (he went down in the quarterfinals in 2014), had Enzo Fernandez playing beyond his capacity, Martínez catching even cellphone signals... And the fans questioning his posture to the point that he gave up. I'm brazilian, if someone makes a docummentary to our 2002 World Cup the conclusion is the same. Change the names of the characters and the external factor for Ronaldo (his most horrific injury in a career filled with them, an injury so ugly that US doctors condemned his career, wanted to make the surgery for him to have some sort of quality life and never play again, the doctors in Europe expected a two year recovery in the least)

Te pasaste Eli. Gloriosa cobertura.

It depends on how u define what a big character is. Just coz Messi is abit layed back doesn't mean he lacks character. I would say they just have contrasting personalities where one(Maradona) was grandiose n enjoyed n attracted the attention just like what CR7 does, while Messi has a covert shy n laid back personality but full of character. Thats why he's been the captain of his teams fr yrs now to date. U cannot be a leader of a team with no character.

Great video, great story. As an I argie i can feel the tension/depresion/frustration we suffered across the years. It was really painfull to use our white/light blue jersey abroad. I was living in Colombia in 2014, and I remember watching the game at home and colombians screaming and shouting in joy after Germany scored their first goal... I was really shocking for me that a latin america country was happy for Germany... i could not imagine had hard might have been for messi since he also had people agaist him in his own country in the lowest moment
Most Latin American hate us. Get used to it. This is why I really enjoyed this winning cycle. They will always try to use any excuse to discredit us and blow Brazil 24x7 as their proxy, since most of the time they cannot do jack by themselves. Chile at least had the guts to beat us. They can talk, but the rest...
i can’t express enough how much we all wanted that Messi win something… and at last… he become that futbol hero that we all need! Gracias lio!
As an Argie, it's absolutely shameful how Messi was treated by a large chunk of the population. They seemingly have collective amnesia now. Just like they have collective amnesia about how embarrassing Maradona's antics were in the 90s. I fully believe he cost the team at least another world cup final in 94. Don't even get me started on his stint as a manager.

Quite a pertinent and astute observation, the symmetries drawn between the 2002 and 2022 campaigns and the convergence with the tense political and economic climate besieging the country. Ironically, I thought after the inconceivable shock defeat to Saudi Arabia that my word they’re going to flop on the Asian continent yet again (even reminiscing about the underwhelming Russia campaign which is technically Eurasia) and Messi would bid farewell from football’s crown jewel similar to Batistuta in Korea/Japan. Then again, I took solace from the U20 team who won ironically in Qatar 1995 with Jose Pekerman who was the coach at Messi’s inaugural World Cup.

“Messi can do better” before WC Qatar he already was the player with by far the most goal contributions in KO of Major Tournaments… in the end Messi carried them to those finals, Maradona also wasn’t that great in his WC Finals.
" *_Maradona also wasn’t that great in his WC Finals_* " I was a teenager in 86 and 90 and watched, taped and rewatched every game of both those WC and let me tell you, he was _that_ great in his WC Finals. If you go back and watch the Italia 90 final, you'll see that if played today, VAR would have overturned the Germany penalty, and awarded Argentina the penalty late in the second half that the ref didn't call. That would have/should have been Diego's second WC. Add the games against Brazil and Italy in that same WC and the "wasn't great" argument quickly begins to seem uninformed. In Mexico 86, everyone remembers the game against England, but for me, the game against Belgium in the semi-finals showed more of his skills. The second goal he scored against Belgium was actually technically better. It's pretty much the same goal, he dribbles past a the Belgian defenders but in the last quarter of the pitch. Then there's his performance in the final against Germany, which until the 2022 final, was in my opinion, the best WC Final, where he essentially willed his team to win after Germany with an injured/or recently recovered Rummenigge coming of the bench, fought back to tie the game after being 2-0 down. Lastly, football historian seem to coincide that prior to Messi in Qatar 2022, there were two players that could be said to have won the WC single handed, Garrincha in 62 and Maradona in 86. I'd say that pretty much says all you need to know of how great he was in the WC Finals.
Argentines could not care less about those NBA like stats. Bring the silverware. Thats football culture in Argentina. Runners up are the biggest losers. A 1st round exit hurts less. Does it hold any logic? No. But that's the way it is.
@@87crimsonJust a comparison of maradona vs messi for Argentina: Maradona: One world cup Vs Messi: One world cup, two Copa Americas, one Olympic gold medal In club level Messi is in another galaxy to maradona in terms of achievement and by the time of 2024 Messi is in another universe to maradona in terms of the achievement for Argentina too 😂 So the NBA like stats indeed came handy to show the level between the two players 🤷
@@rounakvarma3399 Ha, Ha! You can lead a horse to water... sorry, but once this old geezer gets going, it's hard to stop. To be clear; I'm not denying Messi's greatness. He more than deserves all the praise, and in fact, I think most people don't realize what a truly unique talent he has been. Keep in mind that it took his sporting rivalry against another extraordinary player such as CR7 to show us how insanely good he is. For the past twenty years I've considered myself lucky to see him and Ronaldo play. That being said, to read that Maradona "wasn’t that great in his WC Finals" screams recency bias.
I'm Argentinian and not a hard core football follower (except world cups) but the way I see the fact that Messi performed poorly on those years was because Barcelona F.C. saw Messi as he was and the whole team played "for him" to allow him to BE HIM, in Argentina (at that time) the team was full of "prima donnas" that were more worried to fill Maradona's shoes than to "team up" to Messi so instead of playing a a team you had 11 people trying to win a game individually. It's like if in an orchestra every musician plays whatever they think there best song is instead of all following the director. That changed with this last team and you can see it in every game (and end results) proving me right (I think)
I remember that first knockout game, us against Messi and Argentina. Very conflicting thoughts I had the days leading up because I wanted our own piece of history to tell my children about, how we conquered the greatest player ever but I also wanted to see said player achieve his own piece of immortality
Messi was still messi even after he came back from retirement imo. Argentina fans think he changed because they like to believe that something changed in messi that made them win. Those who have seen him at play at barcelona, messi is one of the most fiercest competitor. The guy hates losing more than anything and he would be the most angry if he loses a game. If you made messi mad, you better believe he dribble past everyone and score those goals when he wants. Messi has always been the same messi atleast from the inside. He showed more of his inside during the world cup but that doesn't change that it was still the same messi and not maradonna.

I'm sorry but the ignorance and arrogance of these Argentinean fans is mind-blowing, Messi is the greatest to ever grace a football pitch and for the older generation to put the blame on them not winning until the recent world cup. There is 10 other footballers on the pitch the man can't do everything himself. How other nations would kill to have him play for their country.
excellent documentary, very well done. However I feel that the guy who appears on 12:20, is a bit entitled to think he can speak for all Argentinians ? it may only represent his views and those are particularly biased coming from someone who lives in Buenos Aires. Argentina is a much bigger country and you wouldn't necessarily find that sense of entitlement in other provinces. I say this as an Argentinian as well.

We have a word for the people that criticized messi, "cabezas de termo" meaning thermos' heads. You see it in this video, they can't explain with football concepts why they don't like Messi in the national team, they just come up with the weirdest reasons and the real reason is just seeing the final result disregarding everything else that gives it context and nuance. And I don't wanna make this an attack to Buenos Aires' people but I feel like a lot of the "argentinian idiosyncrasy and culture" described along this whole documentary mainly portraits the culture from Buenos Aires, which is okay as they have the bigger population and the most importants football clubs, but I feel like the biggest toxicity and entitlement surrounding the national team comes from there

Yeah and you're Mr right!!!!
This is the best documentary about football. Vamos Messi. Vamos Argentina.
Qatar proved it takes a team not a player to win a World Cup. You can’t tell me Maradona didn’t have a supporting cast in 86.
it takes a team and someone beyond the genius description and driven by some sort of external factor.

I said yesterday after watching episode 1 that this is the best documentary I've seen in years. I was wrong, it's even better than that.
Amazing series. Jonathan Wilson is the number one football journalist in the world. What a gift to have him here talking about this.
Te pasaste Eli. Gloriosa cobertura.

I predicted Argentina and I thought of giving up on Argentina but I had a conversation with an Argentine friend, which talked me off the ledge, who kept telling me "it's fate, it'll happen, you watch" Juan was right, shout out to my friend Juan Chavez, he knew
Messi ofc isn’t a big character like Maradona but way before he won a major title with Argentina he already played really great in tournaments, he also was just really unlucky in those finals. Most criticism was very undeserved.

Don't even get me started on his stint as a manager.
this documentary gonna be better than any movie that going to be produced about Messi wining the WC

The whole 4 episodes are fantastic, absolutely great, thank you for making this
Quite a pertinent and astute observation, the symmetries drawn between the 2002 and 2022 campaigns and the convergence with the tense political and economic climate besieging the country.

" *_Maradona also wasn’t that great in his WC Finals_* "
I was a teenager in 86 and 90 and watched, taped and rewatched every game of both those WC and let me tell you, he was _that_ great in his WC Finals.

@@87crimsonJust a comparison of maradona vs messi for Argentina:
Maradona: One world cup
Vs
Messi: One world cup, two Copa Americas, one Olympic gold medal
In club level Messi is in another galaxy to maradona in terms of achievement and by the time of 2024 Messi is in another universe to maradona in terms of the achievement for Argentina too 😂
So the NBA like stats indeed came handy to show the level between the two players 🤷
Excelente laburo
Still crying with your videos, gracias
I remember that first knockout game, us against Messi and Argentina. Very conflicting thoughts I had the days leading up because I wanted our own piece of history to tell my children about, how we conquered the greatest player ever but I also wanted to see said player achieve his own piece of immortality
And then there are some people who say Messi had it easy, soon as he wears Argentina jersey the pressure on his shoulders, OMG
"Messi The White"...LMAO best definition ever for Messi´s comeback to National Team 😄👋👋👋

Amazing Copa90. Watching it in Christmas Eve!

And I don't wanna make this an attack to Buenos Aires' people but I feel like a lot of the "argentinian idiosyncrasy and culture" described along this whole documentary mainly portraits the culture from Buenos Aires, which is okay as they have the bigger population and the most importants football clubs, but I feel like the biggest toxicity and entitlement surrounding the national team comes from there
You're not mentioning the Enzo goal, the Macallister goal, the Julian Alvarez goals? This series is just a Messi tugjob, and I love Messi but c'mon, give everyone equal credit.
