- Deutsche Grammophon, Original source. Schubert Trout Quintet, review and shoot out. Compared to Living Stereo, Decca, Columbia, Phillips.
Here is a link to a Michael Tilson Thomas (not my favorite) documentary where dissects the piece and shows rehearsals and also cool interviews with members of the San Francisco Phil about the performance.

This is great! Nice insights on classical music, which are hard to find these days...
I must admit to have become a big Monteux fan. I can't think of any of his recordings that I didn't find enjoyable. Always well-balanced with excellent pacing and, of course, great sound...
The Abbado/LSO was so barbaric and brutal! Love it.
Great video, thanks, very informative.
Just found a VG++ copy of that living stereo version in the classical dollar bin at a local record store. Looking forward to listening.
@musclelur It's such a great version!
Might want to give Boulez/Cleveland a shot (Columbia 2 eye). Wonderfully brutal.
That is one of my go-to versions...it's barbaric. Have you heard the 1959 Markevitch with the Philharmonia? It's similar in its brutality.
I must have about 20 versions of this. The two standouts are van Zweeden and Abbado. The only bad ones are Tilson Thomas (truly dreadful) and Boulez. One point to note is that the Abbado really does have to be vinyl because the transfer to CD lacks punch. I suspect no allowance was made for the different medium.
Alright, I got my Original-Source-DG-mdma-series version finally and really like it. sounds like a Mofi record (mixed compliment/diss). These records as bright as they are, are so good to intro folks to listen to more classical music, on any Stereo. Then I pulled out my Super Analogue Disc (SAD!) Mehta/LA Phil version which I haven't heard much, Omg it truly kicks ass, what bass, not as bright as DG but as bright as an analog disc should be(? can't believe I'm saying this), and quiet like all the SAD's no surface noise, doesn't pull my record mat off by static unlike the DGs. But in fairness this also sounds so good as its made by all Hollywood based musicians and a Bollywood(!) maestro - perfect combo for an almost gaudy piece like this! Would love to hear you review the SAD version as an addendum to this video, I'll go find you a copy and send it over ;)
@pk-kh3cm I am listening right now to DECCA SXL-6624. Grieg piano concerto in A, op. 16. Radu Lupu/ Previn/ LSO. Just a standard narrow band 1973 release and It sounds so Lush and beautiful and natural. No hammering and clanging like the old warhorses or overworked Re-issues...Just wide open natural beauty!
@@FLOWERINGSPIKES I just got the Super Analogue Disc of that, it sounds amazing. Hmmmm I need to try some of these Deccas, I'm too spoiled and prefer to get the SADs while they're available before rich tourists buy em up! I'm begining to enjoy the 70s recordings, was hungup on the golden era recordings of all tubes. Wein Phil is going to play Also Sprach Zarathustra later this year so I've been listening to different versions of it - the two SADs K38C-70006 and KIJC 9198 vs the Fritz Reiner Chicago Analogue Productions one. The SADs pack a better bass as expected even compared to APs amazing reproductions. I have spares of these two SADs actually, tempted to send them to you(need address or contact) with a mate returning to UCLA in coupla weeks, get you to do a review of Also Sprach Zarathustra!
incredible
The Haitink recordings are with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, not the Concertgebouw.
You are correct!!!
Great review I got the Monteux from hot stampers excellent !
@andrewawsmone4637 Awesome, I've never actually bought any records from him but I have culled his site and taken some mental notes. I live in LA so these records are all out there if you have the time and money to go hunt them down.
@@FLOWERINGSPIKES I am in Australia not quite the opportunities
I have watched all your reviews and they r excellent
Good video man, thank you - brutally honest! DG folks must be in shock. who cares. but kudos to them for making these audiophile re-issues. I shall keep an eye out and pick you up the Super analogue disc by papa mehta, its very dynamic, I buy it whenever I see it, gift em to monkeys who need to listen. I'm in tokyo but hope to go see play in mumbai this month when I visit the folks.
@pk-kh3cm Can you get the Super Analogue Disks at a reasonable price in Japan? I actually technically know why those DG re-issues sound wonky, I'll make a short video and offer up my @ cents soon.
@@FLOWERINGSPIKES mate you can pick em up at reasonable prices like 1500-4000yen if you're out and about like me a lot. with xchange rates right now they're cheap given most are in NM condition, while others just need a good wash as a lot of dust in japan (volcanic ash likely), rarely any scratches --pk
@@FLOWERINGSPIKES Gee thats going to go down well with the rest of RUclips raving about them! they do have these wide sound stages and clarity the Super A Discs lack
@@tokioPK That's amazing, Here they go for like 75-150 if you can ever even find them!
@@FLOWERINGSPIKES I'll make you a deal man, you make that wonky sound explanation video in the next 10 days to calm my FOMO anxiety, and I'll slave for you and collect all the Super A Discs you want -- its also a 'mottai-nai' thing, i.e. such a pity to see these records unappreciated; japanese never stopped collecting records thus in the 90s when they came out many folks likely bought them and as they pass away their families sell collections dirt cheap to record stores/second hand stores. they're usually in amazing condition, I've bought 20 odd past year after I became aware of them and one has a skipping/sticking problem, thats it. I do get to check/play them but I rarely do as worst case they need a good wash. 100 bucks each is outrageous! I just found a used copy(go figure) of the new Trout DG for 5,000yen so I'm buying it anyway, how bad can this sound stage be :pk
No offensive but it sounds like your room could do with ceiling absorbers / At least thru RUclips > I Agree with your pick although RCA as a whole not great American review back in the day over praised RCA Classical pieces
Like the sound of my speaking voice sounds echoey? it is a bit cavernous where I shot the video but I'm a good 40 feet away from the stereo and I have 20 ft. ceilings...It's a big room.
My favourite Sacres are:
Dorati/ Detroit SO/ Decca
Chailly/ Cleveland/ Decca
Davis/ Concertgebouw/ Philips
Tilson- Thomas/ BSO/ DG
Markevitch/ Philharmonia/ EMI
On the contrary I found the Abbado - Sacre one of the worst ever put on disc. Very boring and under played account. In general is Abbado rather boring in Stravinsky. Also the DG-engineering sucks; very muddy and unclear account. I compared the original source version with the first LP issue. There is almost no difference in quality. The original source edition is unnecessary expensive and no improvement at all!
@hectorberlioz1449 At least it's on quiet vinyl...haha
@@FLOWERINGSPIKES sorry for my negativity! 😊
@@hectorberlioz1449 No worries, I like it all as long as people express honest opinions about things!
