Terry Eagleton gilt als der führende Literaturtheoretiker und Literaturkritiker Großbritanniens. Die Tageszeitung The Independent bezeichnete ihn 2007 als «the most influential academic critic». Eagelton war Professor in Oxford und Manchester und hält nach wie vor eine Professur an der Universität Lancaster. Er ist Mitglied der British Academy und der English Association. Terry Eagletons Werk umfasst über 40 wissenschaftliche Bücher zur Literaturkritik, zur Kulturtheorie, zu Religion, Politik und Geschichte. Mitten in der schwersten Krise des Kapitalismus brach der berühmte marxistische Literatur- und Kulturtheoretiker eine Lanze für Karl Marx. Streitbar, originell und mit britischem Humor widerlegt er in seinem jüngsten Buch «Warum Marx Recht hatte» zentrale Argumente und ideologische Vorurteile gegen den Marxismus.

Absolutely brilliant lecture that is fortunately horribly titled so that its brilliance is thankfully gatekept 🙌
I have seen Prof. Eagleton give a variation of this this talk, but I prefer this one. I love his dry, deadpan humour. Most of all I agree with his thesis that Marxism, psychoanalysis and Christianity share a similar tragic worldview. It is precisely because I am Christian, that I am on the far left. So many in both those communities do not understand how that can be. It is just as Eagleton indicates it is in tragedy and suffering, humans can find solidarity and compassion. Great lecture!
Amazing summary. I agree with your opinion. But why haven't we found a way to gather those knowledges to build another world?

I also think that Christianity and Marxism are compatible. I am Catholic and I resonate to Marxism. Christian philosophy supports socialism. The reason why Catholic institutions reject socialism is a sign that Christian institutions are more concerned with earthly power than with the teachings of Jesus and therefore side with he Right in return for official status and privileges.
I'm an agnostic who finds your comments interesting. I also lean toward socialism. And it surprised me to learn while studying philosophy at the university to find that there were Christians, both Catholic and Protestant, who found much in Marx that they could identify with.
