Old Scarlet Monastery: Exploring the WoW Alpha (0.5.3)

  • A look at the Old Scarlet Monastery, as found in the World of Warcraft Alpha from 2003. In this version of the game, the Scarlet Monsatery is one continuous dungeon, contrasting the four separate wings found in the World of Warcraft Vanilla/Classic version.
    The 2nd part is a quick (and slightly chaotic) look at Andorhal, which has also undergone some extensive changes.
    In this video series, we take a look at the oldest playable version of World of Warcraft Classic - the WoW Alpha Version 0.5.3. Big thanks to the folks over at the AlphaProject for getting this version up and running and sharing it with the world! I hope you enjoy this glimpse at what used to be, and perhaps together we will find some inspiration for what might lie in wait for Classic+, if Blizzard ever does decide to expand their original entry into the series!

      If you do get into it, give hardcore a try at some point. It actually brings back a lot of the "old school" feeling of Classic World of Warcraft in the sense that, at least for the moment, level 60s and epic gear are somewhat rare compared to normal Classic. And there is a whole new feeling of community with the amount of trust you have to put into your group mates when venturing into dungeons etc.

    I think at the beginning there, when you teleport you are actually teleporting INTO the instance, but the teleport point is behind the portal for some reason. That's why there's nothing back there. When you went up the stairs, you're exiting the dungeon, just from the back of the portal.

      Me too! I think they had to downgrade due to hardware constraints, which is why the game we got sometimes looks a bit bland compared to the Alpha. I also noticed that for example objects such as chests etc seem to have a higher resolution on the Alpha than they do in Vanilla WoW.

      Yeah hahahah it is genuinely so strange! And I'm pretty sure there's almost no lore on that either? Like the only quest associated with GY is the one that you get from the tortured forsaken in the first room, and I don't think he really explains what the deal with the Bloodmage etc. is.

    • @NNoitraa
      @NNoitraa 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@DArch706 exactly, no lore at all. I tried to make my research a while ago but it seems that it wasn't explored any further not even in the next expansions. Even Bloodmage Thalnos it's only assumed that he was an high elf because he is a bloodmage. In 5.0.4 he was renamed into Thalnos the Soulrender but all the info we have about him is that he was a sadistic torturer and extremist and then he got the plague and now he setted his domain inside the graveyard, thats it basically. We don't know if the crusaders are his allied, but there isn't any evidence of this, and also how can they be his allies lore-wise? It wouldn't make much sense, he should've made the end of Fairbanks. And yet, the scarlet members in the torture chambers are chilling just some meters away from his undeads, without even a barricade or gate to separate them xD

    From what i know all npc locations are held server side so how do they know the placement of the mobs? Are the just matched to what we know from classic with the models from the beta or is there more to it?

    • @DArch706
      @DArch706  6 месяцев назад +2

      Hey, thanks for your comment! Really appreciate it :)
      I actually talked to the server owner about that in the past, and he stated that they use old WDB files which they obtained from players who played back in the day on official alpha/beta servers, wrote tools to extract said cached data, which contained info on items, npcs, quests. They extracted all data from the archived allakhazam website, thottbot, etc as well as old screenshots and videos. They also used captured network packets from players who played on the original servers. From what I understand, the AlphaProject only adds what they know is 100% genuine, and if there is no "proof" of something existing/being a certain way in 0.5.3., it will not be added.
      Edit: It's been asked a couple times so I just copy-pasted my reply to another comment, fyi :) wasnt really expecting this to get the views that it does have, if I were I would have done a better job at explaining the server etc. My bad!

    Man, they could have done SOOOOO much with the SC and instead they screw them, and keep doing it! I mean, Blizz created the 'necessary villain' that none openly wants BUT hope to be there, fighting, doing what the "noble warriors" cant, and failed to this day to exploid the fully potentials of this faction, for a more diversity in the game.

    • @DArch706
      @DArch706  8 месяцев назад +13

      I think the day Blizzard killed off the Scarlet Crusade in the Wrath DK starting zone was pretty much the moment the game started going downhill lore-wise. And it was done so cheaply, too. One of the most iconic factions fed for the sake of a tutorial 😅 wcyd

    • @primarchxi6639
      @primarchxi6639 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@DArch706 Well, personally i dont mind, that much what they did in DK zone BUT what they kept doing afterwards! SC was, ironically, infiltrated thus corrupted by a Dreadlord, so we cannot fully blame them for their ideas! Also, initially the Order was founded by survivors of Lordaeron, with what ever this means for their way of thinking, according to their sufferings, and lets NOT forget that they keep fighting the undead, all kinds of them, making HUGE sacrifices! So, i strongly believe that Blizz SHOULD have redeem them, on a certain level, by removing the stigma of "crazy lunatics", and keep them as a faction that works on the edge, yes, BUT in NO WAY being the lunatics we see them ingame!
      Its somehow like how Batman works... Not a scout, like Superman, BUT NOT evil either... Something in between! Now THATS how you make a story interesting and keep ppl ingame! Also, as a Role Player, this would have been the ultimate dream and RP boost for tons of players out there! Trust me, i know!!

    • @DArch706
      @DArch706  8 месяцев назад +2

      @@primarchxi6639 I agree with what you are saying, but I think part of it is also how society has changed in general since World of Warcraft first came out. Not to make this too philosophical/political, but I do think the way the SC went down was a necessary thing in terms of storytelling from the perspective of Blizzard. The increasing commercialisation of a product such as WoW kind of makes it necessary to get rid of moral grey areas. The more a game moves into the main-stream, the more it has to streamline it's storytelling and get rid of morally ambiguous characters, so as to prevent criticism from arising. One might argue that the whole "being taken over by a dreadlord" excuse was a cheap cop-out in the first place - it's the primary reason given these days as to why the Scarlet Crusade had forsaken it's ideals, when really it might as well come down to the circumstances they found themselves in that led to radicalization. And I do think that was reflected in the storytelling of Scarlet Crusade areas. So narratively speaking, I would agree with you that this aspect of the Scarlet Crusade got lost over the years, and they were literally being written off into the "cookie-cutter villain faction", which at the end of the day, is a shame - but not entirely unexpected given the series' trajectory.

    • @primarchxi6639

      @@DArch706 " The more a game moves into the main-stream, the more it has to streamline it's storytelling and get rid of morally ambiguous characters, so as to prevent criticism from arising"
      I understand what you mean BUT if this is or was the case for Bizz then they should change lots of things lorewise, not just what they did with SC. Call me an idiot but i refuse to believe that this was the reason for what they did with SC cause this will eventually kill the game, lorewise...I wanna believe that it was just an extremely poor-idiotic choice.
      Afterall, look at other games like 40k... There is no pure good or evil there...Every faction is kinda right, from their point of view, and see what the Imperium does in order to survive... horrible things!
      There are hints that SC will return but, though im happy about it, i also wonder how much they will screw them this time...☹

    I have always thought that Andorhal would have made a really awesome late game dungeon. But then again i also really like the idea of Stratholme being a 10 man raid like UBRS. I beleive Scholo was originally 10 man as well, that one could go either way.

    • @DArch706
      @DArch706  7 месяцев назад

      Strath I believe was originally 15 man even - at least you could anyways enter with up to 40 people, and the meta settled around 10-15. I was really young at the time so I don't remember, but I could swear I was in there with 3 groups at some point haha. And ye I agree :) Most dungeons were originally intended to be outside areas (non-instanced), so the old Andorhal design would kind of fit into that philosophy also.

      Well said! This year I played Fallout 2 for the first time ever, as well as BG1 and BG2 (not completed yet) and I can safely say it is not just nostalgia that makes these games shine. It's the commitment to storytelling. the particular depth these have is I think in large part due to the reliance on "conventional" means of storytelling by literary exposition - even though Baldurs Gate 3 is a great game, the hollywoodification of gaming by means of complex cutscenes, close-ups of characters and everything being fully voiced makes games in 2023 feel a bit more like pulp than art a lot of the time. Maybe that's something I'd like to explore in a future video. But first I have to get better at making videos 😁

    • @DArch706
      @DArch706  8 месяцев назад

      Heyhey, sorry for the late reply - I actually asked the server developer so I wouldn't go about spreading half truths haha. He said they are mainly getting the important infos they need from WDB files (cache files accumulated while playing the game). They obtained those files from players who played the official alpha/beta servers back in the day. There's also Thottbot and Allakhazam which they have extracted data from, as well as all the old screenshots and videos (I think I linked the screenshot db in one of my video descriptions, if you are curious to check it out). So as far as I am aware, everything that is there is as faithful as possible to the original, and I do remember discussions on the discord about including something and them refraining from doing so as the source was not 100% certified. So I think if they are not absolutely positive about the way something worked, it's not being included. In that sense I'd say the AlphaProject is a pretty faithful recreation of what used to be, which is also why I am quite fascinated by it. Anyhow, sorry for the long reply, and thank you for the excellent question!

    SM, with maybe the exception of graveyard, seems like it was a better design in Alpha, at least from a player perspective. Breaking up the place into four dungeons (yes, I know they shared a lockout/reset) just seemed like a net negative decision. Level 100 is achieved by console commands. If you end up playing on the alpha server you can type .help in chat to figure out all the console commands, or alternatively you can also just google World of Warcraft GM commands. :)
