Why we use 'the' with 5th? Is it specific?

    • @BritishCouncilEnglish

That's right @Salah_-_Uddin. When we use ordinal numbers as determiners before nouns it means we have put these things in a fixed order, like days of the week, months of the year, winners of a race etc. Each one is unique and defined, for example the 5th of November really means the fifth day of November. So the ordinal number clearly tells you which unique day you mean and so has a definite article. In other sentences we can replace 'the' with possessives, such as my, his, her etc. as in sentences like 'It's my first visit here.' or 'Today is her 18th birthday'.

Hi @oentoroBlog, we use eleventh and twelfth (which can be a tricky one for some people to pronounce!)

And 4th, 6th, 7th etc? Her birthday is the fourth of June. (Is it true?)
