How do any of you get bags? We have to pay 8 cents per bag now. Gotta love the government... (NOT).

I would like to make these mats but hard to find places that want them in Jacksonville,Florida. If anyone knows who will take them, let me know.

Hello everyone. Amazing how many people have watched this video. This video is now over 2 years old, and I have learned a lot since then, and have 'refined' the method quite a lot after working with different people to make the mats. This was my first try ever to make a video mainiy for friends who wanted to learn how to do the weaving to take home and teach their friends. I am working on a new video with all the innovations I have made. Will post as soon as I get it finished.

These were the beginning projects. Since then, I built a frame 3ft x 6ft that folds in half for easy transport, and it eliminates the laborious piercings. Much quicker and easier, and a good size sleeping mat.

This is WAY EASIER than cutting the bags vertically! I think I would pull tbe bags through the weaving process with the crochet hook!

This is a very creditable idea but I am asking everyone this question (and not yet getting an answer):- What about bio-degradable plastic bags? They are designed to disintegrate within a certain period. How would this affect someone using these mats who is sleeping rough, exposed to water etc.? How long before these bags breakdown and the mat becomes unusable? When the mat is disposed of eventually it will still need to be recycled in some way. How will this be done?

No matter how negative you make tbis. These people appreciate the warmth. And protection while they have them. I understand someone might steal them too. But people are trying.

Never use biodegradable bags for this project!

Ideally, plastic bags would no longer be given out in shops or used. In Europe, this has been done to a large extent, and people take baskets or reusable bags to grocery shop, like our grandmas used to do. In the US they are far behind with this. So instead of going straight into landfill or whatever, the bags can be used. And when they finally get thrown out, they will be too large to get into the insides of fish and other wild life. Meanwhile, it is keeping a lot of homeless people more comfortable and warm, teaching people skills of weaving and crocheting, and forming a community. I have seen the mats used in corners under bridges, have seen homeless people carry their belongings in the woven bags, and know they are doing some good somewhere.

No, I use plastic shopping bags, which sadly in the US are still very available.

    • @christianehawkshaw6061

I USE a rotary cutter on a mat, left over from my quilting days. You can also use scissors, but I find this quicker. I can put 5 folded bags in one go, as shown in the video

@@christianehawkshaw6061 That's a great idea! You're the 1st one I've seen doing that... sure is a lot faster, and with the ruler it makes nicer and more even strips.

How do you weave the very top part of the rug like the bottom row so the strips don't slide off? Can this be done without sewing across the top fringe?
