I'm in Northern New Jersey, zone 6a. I planted a few test plants last season to see if they would survive the winter here. I planted 2 very young goji berry plants (8-10 inches tall) and mulched them with wood chips. I just saw little buds on them yesterday so they survived 0 degrees this winter. Also, I planted 2 young Aronia berry plants around the same time, about 10 inches tall. One in the ground and one in a small pot. (I actually forgot to put it in the ground) and they both survived 0 degrees. With no mulch!
Goji berries are cold tolerant, so they can handle the cold in many central and northern states.
They can handle about up to -23°C
I should not be watching this right now I'm at work lol! Such great information!
:)
I just cut mine down to the ground and cover with a bale of Hay. They come back big time in the Spring. And they come back with more stalks! NW South Carolina. Zone 7 I think.
I'm also in NC in the triad area. I just cut mine fairly low to the grow and use the leaves off of the tree to cover the plant. Like you said every year it doubles in grow area
But are you getting any fruit?
@@rickdavis2235 Not yet. This coming summer will be the third year for them.
You won't ever get fruit if you keep cutting them to the ground every fall
@@Sam-ko1lo I thought that was what I was supposed to do. My brother in law said his froze and died when he didn't cut them down. We can get into the teen's temp wise. Doesn't happen often but a couple or so days/nights in the winter.
Musa basjoo pseudostems can survive without protection to -5c, as long as it doesn't freeze too often. They've root hardy to at least -10c. I've been growing them in Dublin, Ireland for 15 years.
I like this method. Seems easier than the plastic wrap. Should work on all tropical fruit trees, yes?
THANKS. THIS IS WHAT I WILL DO DURING JULY in Pretoria
I love the ending part seems sooo relaxation I WONDER wheres this place so peaceful I wish i wad there I would love it different view so so so lovely beautiful its what God provided 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎😎
What are the benefits of maintaining a banana tree through the winter as opposed to just restarting after winter
Absolutely can use it in the coconut too I guess ;)
sounds interesting but its not stopping the rain damage is it?
If it rains a lot, do you have to remove the mulch material to let it dry out, to avoid root rot? I live in Central Florida.
shamus is the man .
Would this work during Winter season when the weather drops down to -30?
Which plant has the largest leave: Banana tree or Gunnera manicata or raffia palm?
Hi, will this work on any banana plant variety? Thanks for the video between.
What month should I cut it down? I live in Mo. Thanks!
Hello please can I grow banana, avocado in Italy, and where can I buy them from
Nice idea Jake Mace
What if all I have is wood chips? Should I be buying hay or something from the store?
Hello greeting I ask you, if the temperature drops to 3 degrees or snow falls, can you do that?
My banana plant branch is cut off to root by some kids nighbour ,so only root is inside the pot and no stump will it grow new stem?how many days should I wait?
How can I wrap an outdoor potted papaya tree for the winter in zone 7?
If you don't have mulch can you use straw, or bark chips?
I wonder if you place saran wrap around the tree stakes, will you help the banana plant?
Hi, will this method work in north texas. And would you need to change out the mulch if it rains? Also with this method would you still be able to get fruit from the tree during its harvesting season?
I'm not sure if you tried and had any luck, but I'm n NrthEast TX zone 8a. Will be trying this winter. Already tested it out a few days ago. Wish I had seen this vid years ago. I'll be updating. I'm hoping it works. These guys usually have the great tips for easy problem solving.
Peace N Love
I'm setting to try this this week. I have a cluster of plants so mine will be wider and taller.
did you got any fruits from this banana tree? i read it's impossible to get any good banana fruits if you winter temperature deep below 50f
Will it give it root rot with a smaller one?
You can also use just bubble wrap to protect the trunk
That’s what I do and it works like a charm!!!
@@jayluvboogie You bet . Cheers
Now that's how you end a video!!!!1 100.!
Thanks for the video Jake. My question, what are your temps during Winter and in your view, what Winter tempretures would make this solution obsolete?
I believe he lives in a subtropical area. If you live in a cooler climate that it does get below 65 degrees. I would try to get a large clear bag .place on top covering. and put some mulch at the bottom many people use hay some people just use straw, but I use bamboo Mulch and bamboo mulch isntout on the market if you interested in getting some just let me know ,but the bamboo mulch at the bottom of our banana trees absorbs any water that isn't supposed to be there, and then it also provides water to the bananas tree as needed.
No freezing at all is the only way to not have to do this
Another good one. Thanks. Question, what is the birdcall @ 7:07 please?
Would wrapping the trunk in bubble wrap work
Do you do this with your mature bananas? Or only with your young ones?
That ‘hair-don’t’ looks kind of banana tree like itself.
Do you think that will work over here in Upstate South Carolina we go down to single digit in temperature like this past week we have snow and the temp plumit down to 8*F.I always dug my banana tree and plant it again next spring and i decided not to plant again its tiring, plant dug plant...you know what i mean,i want to go back to the Philippines where we can plant all year round..my moringas, guava, avocado and my flowering tropical shrubs like plumeria and my orchids are inside my house when winter is here.I left my pomegranate tree outside to test if it can survive the winter.
What are those low growing fruiting plants next to the banana?
im lucky, urban garden in london, my bananas never need protection, they are huge and flower... grow musa basjoo , it can cope to minus 10.
rusty fox my Musa basjoo took -15°F (With a lot of snow and some mulch)
Lucky you! I am in Kent but live in a hill overlooking a large lake, the wind is something else do my baby Musa is coming indoors
But that bananaplant produce "real common market bananas" i think . It is not cold tolerant like Basjioo's or Sachkalin type . In case of "cold fronts" this is a cool method .
What happens when it rains all winter? It wets the mulch and rots the corm! Make no sense to me!
Last video you used a piece of plastic. Is the ventilated material better? Why?
Hi jake I live in Pennsylvania and I happen to buy a banana plant this summer been kind of worried about it I'm keeping it as a big pot plant indoors and Outdoors do you think it would be fine indoors through the winter time even though my house gets kind of cold?
What if the basjoo is in a location where winters can be very wet as well as cold? They would rot?
So what if it rains a lot during our winter, would this method suffice? (in my case Papaya in Sydney). Or will too much rain cause the mulch to cause rotting of the tree?
What type of netting is it??
How often do you get freezes in your area?
Hi Jake, will you be protecting your Moringa trees you just planted?
Hi Michaela. No, I do not cover them!
Can i do this in Wisconsin?
Hi how can i save my fruit trees that got black frost in kroonsdad south afrika. my mango, avo, pawpaw and bannana threes got frost pkease help me trying to save them
Thanks! I like this better than the plastic method. Does this work for mangos, too?
I have a huge question ok been having a bug prob thought it was bed bugs they said no then we thought it was dust mites. no so I've noticed every time front door opens I feel little stings here an there question do they carry fruit nits r very small black bugs there everywhere all on front door an side of house never had this prob I have huge banana trees an huge bananas growing with purple flower I need help don't know what else to do I spray they stop then they come back plz let me know so I can figure this out going crazy
how to protect a dragon fruit is no water need o so? ,please thank you
That's good if it's dry but what if it rains while it's wrapped like that?
Good stuff
Can use dry leafs?
Melikerocks *facepalm
Does this work for mangos, too?
No you need the other method for mangos
It’s so much easier just wrap the plants on bubble wrap to get them through winter 🥶
What about old fashioned Christmas lights?
So you talk about not watering it due to rot but it WILL rain during the winter. Not seeing the difference and how you'll prevent rot.
We are looking for fruiting variety of bananas. Which variety do you use? Thank you
can I use this method for a small avocado trees? I had it two years before I put it in ground, (planted early 2016) some branches are turning a dark brown and losing leaves.
But it still alive? And get the fruit? Thx
You should get straw Straub won't hold the water in and if you get well you guys are in Arizona so I'm in the Northeast where it rains during the winter time so people who have banana trees and it gets starts getting really cold I put the same effect he has basically and I use straw for my banana trees out here in Southeast Georgia 8 hours from Tampa Bay 4 hours to Jacksonville Florida it gets cold by us we already in 28° I cut my tree leaves down wrap them up with newspapers at the bottom give them some extra coffee grinds eggshells and banana peels then I mulch it with the same effect but I use straw because it rains and it will cause root rot which you don't want this works in subtropical climates where you don't get much rain but for the states that do get rain this is not a good idea to do my opinion of course strong would work way better for people in Northeast Southeastern area of the United States of America where it does get cold but use straw then leaves.
Good information. Straw is an excellent insulator because it doesn't hold water, is hollow (traps air) and doesn't compress like leaf, grass or hay.
@@rickdavis2235 Yes Rick but we don't use hay in our neck of the woods. What we use around our banana trees , is Bamboo mulch.
along llwith the large clear bags creating a greenhouse for it, we use bamboo mulch. Yes I said bamboo mulch. As you can see the name of my channel is called Green Steel USA LLC. We grow giant bamboo out here on 4 Acres of rural land in Southeast Georgia. We have excellent clay source and mineral spring well water which helps the bamboo out. bamboo liks to get their feet wet but they don't like to be soaked
Our weather system kind of files the tennessee-kentucky weatherflow. Unfortunately it gets extremely cold sometimes in the winter and because banana trees is a subtropical plants. I put large bags on top of my tree. It creates moisture with the sun and continues to allow the leaves to grow on a natural basis. The water on the inside is good for the banana tree because banana trees need lots of water for them to create strength to grow nice beautiful Chiquita bananas. And unfortunately I do not have the best setup for a greenhouse just yet, but eventually I will love to move them into my 12 ft hoop Greenhouse. Any moisture that is on the floor the bamboo wood absorb it , along with providing extra water for the bananas to grow through in the winter.
@@greensteelusallc7862
I put my cavendish in my greenhouse and the leaves started to yellow so I moved it back outside with the blue java. It's already looking better.
We can grow bamboo down here too but most people find it too invasive.
I do this with my fig trees
what if it rains
what about nc
Why don't you get a Namwa banana and not to worry about frost.
We are going to protect banana tree.hahahahaha
I did this, and my banana rotted from the inside. Still solid and firm all the way up but mushy and brown from the top to the bottom. I cut it down in small pieces at a time hoping to see green in the center, but all brown mush
Which banana tree did you have?
Renuparmar Renu Renuparmar Renu Renuparmar Renu Renuparmar Renu
did anyone else get pissy when he damaged the leaf. made me not want to listen to him anymore. anyways roll the tape
Hey, at the end of the video there is a gayboy sitting on some rocks practicing being a ballerina.
No man-bun please.
