      Lee was coaxing how the instrument likes to sound rather than attempting to impose his will and style, as Rob tends to.

    There's a clear difference between being honest about a product and being rude and immature. With all due respect, for 90% of the video it's Rob talking about how "he'd never buy this guitar" and all the bad things about it except TONEZzz. At the end of the day Andertons is a business and Lee the owner. It's quite visible that Lee doesn't know what to say when you act like that.

    There’s NOTHING like the sound of a 335! Out of all the “main” guitars out there, strat, tele, les paul, prs, and other major guitars, a 335 has such a PERFECT tone!!! I can’t wait to buy an epiphone inspired by Gibson 335. I play one a guitar center and FELL IN LOVE! WONDERFUL GUITARS!

    As a long time broken wristed ham handed acoustic player, I run 11-50 flatwound on my hollow body. I have a hard time playing anything lighter than 10-49 unless the nut is low and the frets are tiny. Respect for guys who can play super light strings on jumbo frets, it takes a degree of control not to push everything sharp.

    Scale length is standard Gibson, so shorter than Fender or CHAPMAN! I do realize that these guitars have a Bigsby so there is more string under tension, BUT.... As I recall "Rob loved the Gretsch Streamliner guitars so much he bought one" And those guitars have the same scale length as these and Bigsby vibratos.
    Rob's got used to playing in C and forgotten how standard tuning feels.

    Possibly Rob could try playing with the guitar on the proper leg in the classical style. Or even, get this, strap it on!?!crazy, I know! This isn't a snipe at you, Rob, but if you took either of these guitars home and played only that guitar thru, say a Fender Princeton with no pedals for one year (at home, not on stage or studio), I think you'd be amazed at the results in your playing.

  • @marcushogan6613
    @marcushogan6613 7 лет назад +20

    Funny how rob finds it so difficult to play since aside from the size the scale length and presumably the neck feel are the same as a Les Paul

    • @vw9659
      @vw9659 7 лет назад +6

      Yes that confused me too. They all have 24.75" scale. So the difficulty bending he mentioned ("the strings are so tight I can't really play them") is more likely down to being strung with a bigger gauge. ie nothing to do with the actual guitar. Granted he doesn't like that it's too big for him.

    • @gringogreen4719
      @gringogreen4719 7 лет назад

      Tim W
      That's nut width and string spacing that could be different. The 335/330 guitars play differently than a Les Paul. Its the same thing as the feel on a Strat and a Tele standard even though both are 25.5 inch necks.

    • @marcushogan6613
      @marcushogan6613 7 лет назад +7

      Nut width/string spacing should be identical on the 355 to a standard/historic les paul so Rob must just be referring to the string gauge and maybe the body size again

    • @tonymost1670
      @tonymost1670 6 лет назад +3

      I own both a 355 and a Les Paul Standard and they are worlds apart in feel. It's true the string tension on the 355 is greater than on a LP ( I have 10s on both). The 355 isn't a difficult guitar to play at all - unless you want to shred the shit out of it - and I think Rob is being a bit dismissive here. IThe 355 is a very musical intsrument.

    The way ES guitars sit is what makes them ultra-comfortable. Rob just isn't used to it. They feel a lot like acoustic guitars. Super comfortable. Also the scale length is *less* than most PRS's. They're super easy to play. I suspect he's put off by the look.

    Good video.
    The 355 semi hollow is championed by many players. Johnny Marr played one as well as Noel Gallagher played them. The 330 is a full hollow body, not a semi hollow. Full hollows will feed back at the drop of a hat and does require a different tact to playing. Grant Green a jazz great and William Reed from Jesus and Mary Chain played 330s.
    Funny enough the Epiphone Casino was a better known guitar that was pretty much a 330. If you find an Epiphone Casino built in Kalamazoo, MI it was built on the same line that the 330 was coming off of. One common complaint is that the neck joint was either prone to fail or break. The headstock also shares the weakness of the Les Paul so if you get a 330 or a Casino, baby it.
    Both are great guitars and if you are interested in them make sure to play one first, they have to feel right or you are wasting money. A great inbetween guitar of these two is an Ibanez Artcore AFS75T which is the same depth but with humbers and a vibrato. It is only a single cut away rather than a double cutaway like these two. Great guitar and a great guitar to upgrade!
    If you want to get into semi hollow and full hollow body guitars and you want to ease into it I suggest the Ibanez Artcore and Epiphone guitars. If you buy used you can pretty much sell it for what you paid for it. Most people take extra special care on these guitars.
    Years ago I got into semi hollows with my Epi Sheraton ll and it felt great but I hated the look at the time. I eventually grew to love it and tricked it out with Gibson 57 humbuckers, new pots and Graphtech saddles. Whoever ended up with that guitar got a great gem that was pretty close to a 335. I had to sell it and I miss that guitar. Caleb from Kings of Leon plays the same model and color.

    I had a John Lennon Casino, which is essentially the same as the ES-330. It sounded fantastic and had a really fantastic 50s style neck, but the radius was flatter than I liked (14") and due to those weird horns its access past about fret 12 was difficult. I find playing up the neck on my dreadnought easier! I sold it to a guy in a U2 tribute band.
    Obviously lots of jazz, R&B, and funk players have played thinline electrics. Alex Lifeson played a 355 for a long time and Prince played a 335 a lot near the end of his life.

    The 330 is not semi-hollow, it's fully hollow. That's mentioned in the video but both the title and description are wrong. If you want to use a term for both you can call them semi-acoustic, since they both are that.
    Also worth noting that both the 335 and 330 have smaller sized versions (339 and 390).
    Always enjoy these videos.

  • @MichaelHattem
    @MichaelHattem 2 года назад

    The size is for tone. The Gibson hollow bodies that preceded it were 16” (or even 17”) and so they kept that bout size but made it thinline with a center block and double cutaway. The hollowness (or semi-holowness) is what gives them a woody tone that sits somewhere sonically between the LP and the full jazz boxes like the 175, 350, L5, etc….

    For the record, this is the most entertaining gear-review channel on the internet. Rob and Lee are both extremely talented musicians, and if their styles contrast each other from time to time, it just makes for a more thorough review of the equipment.
    My question to anyone that owns one of these guitars is this, and I think Lee hinted at an answer...Regarding the size of the ES range being “too big,” they can’t feel any larger than any standard, dreadnought-sized acoustic, can they?

    ES-330 guitars are FULLY hollow. That is why it sounds so lovely and proper when listened to acoustically as opposed to the ES-335/345/355 guitars. The necks join the bodies at different frets as well excepting the "L" 'Long-Necked' version that was once offered. I don't know if Gibson still offer it.
    Famous users? Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, 3/4ths of the Beatles, B.B. King, Keith Richards, Brian Jones, Slim Harpo and, if we include the Epiphone Casio (made in the same factory back when we made everything in the USA) then we can throw in Radiohead, Paul Weller, Dave Davies and a host of other strummers. Yes, to be accurate, the Beatles used the Epiphone variant.
    My favorite example of this guitar's sound being Paul McCartney's solo on Taxman; wild and biting. Sorry, George!

    So the ES-355 in the video is the one and only currently listed on Andertons website. I was playing the same VOS 2016 model at Thomann recently in Germany. Like a lot of Gibson customs now, its a richlite finger board. Nothing wrong with that in my opinion, just saying as Lee mentioned ebony as customs used to be a few years ago. I tried es335, 345 & 355 the same day. For me the 355 had a richness while still remaining open that the other two could not come close too. Plus I think it looks awesome in VOS with the bigsby!

    News flash, guys: The Gibson ES-330 is a FULLY HOLLOW body guitar. It's Gibson's full-on version of the Epiphone Casino, which I KNOW you've heard of. I don't blame you for the mistake, though, since it fools the eye by not having a wooden base on the bridge. That fully hollow construction is most likely the reason for the more acoustic tone you noticed.

    Famous 330 player. My favorite player of all time. Grant Green played a 330 with a trapeze tailpiece.

    Controlling that edge of feedback tone make the 330 a harmonic monster. Way more desirable than the others methinks :)

    Shame Rob doesn’t like these guitars. I’ve always loved the look and sound of the Gibson Semi Hollows and I’d love to own one. My dad has an epiphone Sheraton 335 and I love it. It was more or less the first electric guitar I ever played.

    I enjoy more reviews where the captain gets to play some of his stuff.. i think it shows better the real tone of the Guitar because rob always plays high gain stuff and makes all guitars sound the same... very boring tbh

      It doesn't matter how well Rob plays, insecure people will always bleat about how 'soulless' Rob is.

      I think that's a bit harsh, I'd agree with Claudio to a large extent. Rob does tend to turn up the gain and shred most of the guitars they show, which doesn't give you a lot of help in hearing the guitar's tone. Having said that, he is a stunning player and on this episode he is playing very tastefully and made me start to fiddle with my amp to try and find that exquisite tone.

      I think the different playing styles of Rob and The Captain give us a more dynamic sound for each guitar they are showcasing.The Captain playing blues,rock and Rob playing riffy hard rock and metal tones.That way the veiwers can differentiate the capability of each instrument.It reaches a wider audience and does not limit the video's to one style of playing,we get the best of both styles.Not everyone has the same taste in music as you do,change is a good thing.

      patrickcol yes I absolutely agrer, maybe I was a bit too quick explaining my point ! Rob is a great player, very talented, but he has a very characteristic style of playing and tries to implement that style on pretty much every guitar he touches which in my opinion is a bad thing. Indeed many guitars, such as these hollow bodies, would benefit from being played by someone like Danish Pete and The Captain. I honestly do not enjoy videos were Rob will grab some Casino or Dot and try shredding with it. But then again that's my opinion ! Thank you for your comments !

    greatfully Rob played some nice tasteful riffing early on in the vid... no 80's influenced pinch harmonics etc.. These guitars are all about soul and tasteful legato runs. and as far as Rob going on about how he would never own one.. well, that's OK. He might never own a 6 string lapsteel either. Doesn't mean they aren't good instruments. I think anytime you get a chance to pickup a guitar you wouldn't normally play it forces you re-evaluate your playing and may even be cause for inspiration. Great example after playing 6 string electric guitars for 25 years... I picked up a detuned 7 string guitar. WOW... loads of fun and it really re-ignited my passion for trying new things.

    I'm quite a bit smaller than rob but have no issues playing a 335. Also, Rob mentioned something about the scale length being long, but it's the same 24.75" as a Les Paul. A 335 with 10s has always been one of my favorites to play.
    Also worth mentioning that the bit starting at 15:00 was one my favorite solos I've ever heard Rob play. I think this guitar being a little bit outside of his comfort zone prevents him from playing a million notes per second and so he has to chose his licks more carefully.

    KEF loves his gibson semi hollows , he also played a es 330 in the early stones days. Warren Haynes and Rich Robinson both have a signature es 335 that sound excellent. They both play a mean guitar as well.......
