  • Paint a whimsical, colorful piece of artwork in three easy steps: 1) paint color over your whole page, 2) draw a simple design, and 3) use Negative Painting to create a soft-toned backdrop for your colorful design. In this quick tutorial I'll show you how to lay down a groundwork of watercolor that will become the vibrant color that makes your artwork sing. Then we'll use gouache or tinted opaque watercolor in smooth pastel color for the negative painting that contrasts with and showcases our colorful subjects - in this case, a whimsical bird and flowers.
This video is Part Two of three sessions, diving deep into the hows and whys of, and the variety of uses for negative painting. These three sessions together will give you a good understanding of the basics and more of Negative Painting and how to use this important watercolor technique effectively in all your artwork, so be sure to watch all three videos in my LOST IN NEGATIVE SPACE Series!
