The point of minimalism is to not have a bunch of crap and not buying a bunch of crap and well there’s not a lot of crap and a lot can be a DIY soooooo yup looks like minimalism to me
I know this video is a year old but I think since then, Alexandra has really improved. I loved what she did with her friend Carla’s loft. I think she owes her sister a better makeover. Always functionality before how it looks. That is the key for interrupt design. I am not saying but I have surely heard a lot of them say that.
Don't think anyone genuinely needs a ladder in their bedroom, especially a minimalist... A small table without drawers would have worked in the space just as well, if not better, and would have been 10x more functional. Clutter accumulates because people either don't have designated 'homes' for things, or simply don't return them to those locations. If you remove one clutter gathering surface from a room, it will pile up somewhere else. The key to no clutter is to get into the habit of putting things away occasionally.
it is cute room but it just left me wondering like where to put that glass of water? on the floor? on top of the books? I'd prefer at least one sturdy nightstand where to put that water and other things. Books are gonna move and get possibly wet and also the bottom of the basket is not flat surface.
diamonddustable this would have been a great opportunity to create a faux shelf nightstand instead. True minimalism. And I felt she didn’t keep to the theme her sister loves, black and white and clean lines.
Use any sports anti-spill bottle instead of a glass, put it on the floor in the same spot every night you soon get used to where it is and never have to turn the light on to get it or find spiders floating in it. win win.
I really don't think the ladder equals storage you could have done floating shelf as a night stand with the pendent light over it. Or if the ladder actually had the step for footing instead of dowels then it could be used to place things on. I think the rod displaying the clothes is clutter.
I think she'd have been better getting a ladder shelf rather than a ladder as it would do 3 things better and take up less room than the 3 things she put in. Though the ladder she put in is actually really functional, she just didn't show it well and you have to be a neat person already to use it as she intended. She should have folder her sisters pjs on one rung, hung heeled shoes on the lower rungs, got a bedside light that clamps on, stuck any hats and scarves on the higher rungs, used the higher rungs to hang clothes for the next day down the back in the dead space, etc. Her hanging closet was a good idea but she already had the ladder to do that. Minimalist doesn't mean bare, just pared down and functional. Instead of just amending/repurposing/taking things away that didn't work, she replaced them all. She also could have kept the basket the right way up and put a lid on it, keeping the original purpose AND giving it a new one.
Pamela R. That’s what I was saying! Lol floating shelves r awesome alternatives for tables or I would have bought a stylish tray for her bed to put her drinks..
You really missed the mark here which is kind of disappointing since your sister literally sent you a picture of what she had in mind. You could have just left it at the black table, a long black mirror, a cute picture frame and a plant just like in the photo. Just those FOUR things alone would have made this room better than whatever this is. Smh. That ladder is sad😒😔
It's a nice concept, but where do all the genuinely practical things go? Chargers, makeup storage, space for all the little useful clutter bits that can't be left out on a surface without looking messy - like earphones, or jewellery, or a hairbrush etc?
She said the ladder was a decorative item that was also functions.. but it was not functional at all. A nice small bed table would have looked so much better. And indead the black fairy lights are so not minimal/working in that area
Cute cat. $100 for that ladder, nope. You could have purchased wood from Lowe's or Home Depot to do that or found one way cheaper than $100. The room doesn't look anything like the picture she showed you, it looks totally opposite. The best item is the dressing table.
"She doesn't like pattern or colour". Immediately puts items with pattern and colour in the room. This room ended up just as fussy as it was before, just in a trendier way. I just don't get it. Alexandra, you COMPLETELY MISSED THE POINT!
I'm literally here just to find this comment after Alexandra's makeover for her sisters new room where they read some of the comments from this video 😂 I'm so glad I found it!
"night stands can be messy" yes but they store away shit you don't want to be seen. and instead, you chose a...ladder...to hand clothes? is that not cluttery? Your style is cute, but you need to think of functionality rather than aesthetic. Bigger and more important pieces should cost the most NOT 'decorative' items.
I’m glad your sister liked it. I’d hate the clothes rack, makes a small space look even smaller, like there’s nowhere to put all your stuff. Minimalists typically don’t like the look of clutter, and that’s what the clothes rack looks like.
The dresser is fine, if she wanted it she just have to cut the two ends of it, and dye it white, it would look stylish. This's not a minimalist bedroom. The room only needed shelves with minimal decor and organized stuff. Her closet needed drawers so she can keep it organized and use it to its full capacity.
My thoughts exactly, I'd have painted the drawers black though as there was only the pointless tv stand that was black. The shelves at the bottom of the closet were under utilised, holding what looked like it was stacks paper or similar. All of that could have fitted on one shelf (or the free standing shelves she got rid of) and use the other 2 with baskets for the rest of her clothes.. also.. where is her underwear, does she just wear socks and no other undies? Could have moved the small shelf unit closer to the head of the bed and used that as a nightstand and actually as a book case (it was completely bare). Or put it where the mirror thing went and put a small mirror on it. $400 for that makeover? could have done it on $50 if that.
I will say, I don’t think that dresser matched the style she was looking for. It took up so much space and was very bulky. I think she would’ve been better to get rid of it, and either put shelves all the way to the bottom in the closet, or even put a small dresser inside the closet so she has drawers in there. I have a normal size closet but when we moved in we put a bar to hang shirts across the bottom (let’s be honest, most people only hang shirts now a days) and shelves all the way to the ceiling. The amount of stuff I get in that closet is insane. There’s so much room for folded things. If they had left that bar at the top and done shelves all the way down (reverse of mine) it probably would’ve been all the storage she needed. Especially cause she’s a minimalist.
Minimalism it's not the biggest problem here. It's not minimalistic, but other than that it's not even good looking. She could have done so much more with this room. Maybe some fancy lights, some nightstand, some pictures. The ladder was the biggest mistake. She is doing a makeover with minimal budget and buying a ladder that is so expensive and not useful is meaningless to me. I'm not here to hate, but let's be honest. If she did this to me I'd be so pissed. What is that wood diy thing purpose? Takes so much space of the room and it's also useless. Today you can buy a beautiful cheap mirror and organizer and it could have looked much better than this and would be much more useful...
I was thinking the same. Minimalistics must not be having 4 hangs with colorful dresses hunging in your room. But she liked it. Maybe ended hunging a white dress jajaja
that basket is also such a waste of space.. u took the space of a nightstand but didnt give the same space utilization or functionality.. everything looks cuter than practical.
I understand and take a lot of pointers out of the minimalistic lifestyle, however it could be used to describe an aesthetic. Words can have multiple meanings!
Poodle Shares she uses the word minimalistic Which is important because it doesn’t mean she’s actually trying to say she’s following the distinctive ideology of minimalism instead she’s saying her sisters minimalist tastes in aesthetics like lack of color make it appropriate to us the word
Superimposing what we thought as our idea of "minimalist" (pompoms, tassels, macrames) just because we love those types of decors against the other's idea of minimalist (clean lines, black and white) is not a win-win situation
A quick tip...notch the hanging wooden dowel so that the rope stays in place if the clothing gets punched about. The bare bulbs may be fine for many but I would need a shade.
„Her closet does not fit all her clothes” did she say and got rid of the dresser. „Sidetables look so clunky“ she said an filled the space with an even clunkier, less functional ladder. This room is not even close to being a functional space to live in and it’s upsetting :D this is what minimalistic interior design is about. Getting rid of useless clutter and having functional furniture, that will look tidy, clean and give your stuff a place where they belong. You literally got rid of any functional piece and added open storage solutions that only look nice if you decorate them with nice stuff and make an effort to actually keep it clean, but otherwise look horribly messy in a matter of days.
Hi Alexandra! I love budget makeovers because let's face it, it's so much more approachable and it forces us to use our creativity the most! With that being said, may I offer a suggestion? I like the overall minimal space, but I was stunned at the $100 price tag of the ladder. I believe that that money could have been stretched a little further around the room. I know you like to diy, so may I suggest an IKEA Ivar side unit for future reference? It could be stained the same color, leaned against the wall to function the same way, and it would have been almost a 10th of the price. Great job with the videos. I look forward to more makeovers. :)
Just wanted to point out that you "spoke" so kindly suggesting that. Not like other people here in the comments that are being so harsh in the way they present their opinions. So nice to have people like you in the world! 😄

Alexandra, you and your sister have such different styles at ends of the spectrum of color schemes and designs. By looking at this bedroom makeover of hers. Highlights IMO: TV bench, Felt storage baskets, Wall bracket, Ceiling brackets, Cushions, Side table basket.
I wouldve moved the bed to one side and added a large black wooden sliding door dresser and beside it a small black table leading to the wall where the basket is so she could have a larger space as a book shelf, for a lamp, random stuff.. I know it doesnt matter what Id do but I think its better to have more space so that your clothes arent squashed in together in a closet or catching dust om a rod in the middle of the room.
Sis sent you a picture with stark black and white and you gave her a lot of beiges and natural wood. She also showed greenery and a black and white print but got neither. The ladder is a fun element and she seemed to like it, but the lights were too big and obtrusive. They make much more delicate lights than that. The light fixture may have looked better if the messy cord was tightened up against the wall or hidden under white tape. Even the rope for the hanging clothes rack could have been a black cord and the dowel painted white or black. The black table at the end of the bed worked, but not the light felt containers. Too floppy. The basket /side table should at least have been painted black or white. Better if it was a nice foot deep rectangle attached to the wall! Same with Dani's DIY, the piece looks cute but it should be black or white because that is what your sis is looking for. Hope you go back and fix these things for her.
This room is really cute! Although in the beginning of the video you mentioned your sister prefers black, white and minimal - I felt you did the opposite consisting of pompoms, not minimal, colour, and beige... I think this room suites you more than it does her..
Meh...I don't think so...not really listening to what the client wants. Plus other than the light or bench, nothing was black, while the picture had much more black pieces which balanced with he amount of white in the room. Even painting the walls behind themed a different color would have made a HUGE difference, but again...meh.
Love the flipped over basket as a night stand! That would be awesome for lower beds and you can always flip it back over and use for blankets etc if you don't use beside the bed anymore.
Lmao gets rid of dresser "she doesnt need this" Adds hanging rack "she needs more space for wardrobe" Gets rid of side table "too much clutter" Adds unstable basket, ladder, messy exposed lights, magazine, books and nowhere to put a glass of water Calls this a minimalist video - I dont think she understands what these words mean.
The room is nice and clean but I would have maybe painted an accent wall black or done black and white stripes and I would have definitely included that great painting of Audrey Hepburn in the final decor.
This is the first video of yours I watched, & in the past two days I have totally stalked your videos. I love them and you! Your style is amazing and you're so creative & fun to watch. My favourites are your makeovers and DIY special functional items!
I like the hanging rod idea and the mirror vanity piece, but as others have said, the ladder is not functional in this room (and I usually like the use of fairy lights and ladders). The basket would also be better replaced with a small, unobtrusive night stand. But, the owner of the room seemed to like it, so oh well :)
I would ALWAYS need a full dresser! 🤣 I converted a huge, beautiful tv armoire into a clothing cabinet. It has a couple of drawers in it and I use that for underwear and leggings.
I actually liked the room how it was before more than that thing at the end. I love how you decorate in your own style, but maybe stick with that style jajaja
This video was so awesome for so many reasons. I loved the subtle shade and zingers you threw at your sister (sister banter is the best!) and Marty is my favourite. Watching him snooze away in the time-lapse made me smile. Also, that DIY vanity/multi-use piece is phenomenal! Thanks Alexandra!
You make a very good point about night stands... mine is definitely always cluttered with stuff I don't need. This is really making me rethink the bedroom I'm putting together!
I love you talked about the Budget for the room makeover. I would love if you include that in your new videos. Like a total budget and where you came in at and maybe a running total along the side? Please please
I love watching your videos. You are so lovely and funny. Loved your goodbyes lol! I really like the changes to you sister's room. My favourite is the makeup area.
The basket is still a bed side table... just because it's a basket upside down doesn't mean it won't get cluttered and full of useless stuff. The book stack was probably better ... just saying
I am glad her sister loves it still, even tho it is a different style. But Alexandra definitely did not listen to what her sister wanted.... it is more boho. Her sister wanted more scandinavian style!I would feel misunderstood and not listened too if I was her sister to be honest.
This is literally the only room you’ve done that I don’t like at all. I couldn’t wait to see minimalist because that’s what I like most.
sheena chante' Same!
There's almost nothing in there that's truly practical, which is the point of minimalism.

nah minimal is by definition practical ...

that ladder didnt do much other than holding lights which were not even a necessity n also took too much space in the room n took too much budget too.
@Akiyo Edits• It's opportunity cost, though. That $100 could have gone towards something better.
👎

Going back and watching your first videos… all I can say is WOW, you have come a LONG way Alexandra!!! 👏🏼
It's a nice concept, but where do all the genuinely practical things go? Chargers, makeup storage, space for all the little useful clutter bits that can't be left out on a surface without looking messy - like earphones, or jewellery, or a hairbrush etc?
The black fairy lights do not make that ladder look appealing at all. This is definitely not a minimalistic room.
She said the ladder was a decorative item that was also functions.. but it was not functional at all. A nice small bed table would have looked so much better. And indead the black fairy lights are so not minimal/working in that area
I agree.

I agree
I also very much agree. She was told black and white and all I saw was beige, beige and more beige added
That ladder you said was beautiful was truly hideous
Lol
I agree for the first time.
Hideous not so much, but least practical, and tookup all the budget?????
I really like the ladder so horses for courses...

The ladder should’ve been black maybe? And I would get very annoyed if anybody was to remove my dresser and put my clothes on a rod🤣
"I don't like night stands"
- flips a basket over to basically be less functional nightstand with less space. .....
and cheap looking
my thoughts exactly when i was watching the part lol
had to use $10 basket cuz she used her night stand budget on the ladder.
And harder to clean
I also found that so unpractical
The dresser is fine, if she wanted it she just have to cut the two ends of it, and dye it white, it would look stylish.

I’d be mad too!
So hardcore agree ... this was a cringe fest
She could have at least gotten a leaning bookshelf
I really don't think that's what minimalism means. But a cute makeover nonetheless.
Harika Mohan minimalism is whatever it means for your lifestyle
Harika Mohan aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Harika Mohan as a minimalist, that clothes rack and ladder where shit will just get tossed onto gave me anxiety 🤣
I agree
I was thinking the same. Minimalistics must not be having 4 hangs with colorful dresses hunging in your room. But she liked it. Maybe ended hunging a white dress jajaja
You sure added junk to her space.
that basket is also such a waste of space.. u took the space of a nightstand but didnt give the same space utilization or functionality.. everything looks cuter than practical.
U know what would make the whole room look even better, PLANTS
you know saying "minimal" every two seconds won't actually magically turn all the extra bullshit into a minimalist bedroom
Lara LMAO
I guess the point of minimalism is being misunderstood here but I am loving the dressing table.
Yeah she's really missing the point, the point of minimalism is being simple and things you *need* .

Exactly!
Agree with you

The room is nice and clean but I would have maybe painted an accent wall black or done black and white stripes and I would have definitely included that great painting of Audrey Hepburn in the final decor.
That ladder is way too big and all those wires, fairy lights, and ropes are a lot of visual clutter.
Very cool, however, it isn't "minimal" AT ALL!!
How is this minimal? Someone give her a dictionary please and a colour palette! This was the complete opposite of what her sister wanted.
This is cool and all but where do you keep your vibrator?
This is the first video of yours I watched, & in the past two days I have totally stalked your videos. I love them and you! Your style is amazing and you're so creative & fun to watch. My favourites are your makeovers and DIY special functional items!
I'm so happy to hear that! Yay!
I like that vanity set. Super cute.
This is adorable, and so are you and your sister❤
I would ALWAYS need a full dresser! 🤣 I converted a huge, beautiful tv armoire into a clothing cabinet. It has a couple of drawers in it and I use that for underwear and leggings.
I like it. It's neat and minimal with the right touches without it being over the top.
you turned her room more into boho (aka your style) with those tassels and pompoms and stuff...
Omg....I love that piece Dani made...
Really nice
Alexandra, you did a great job! It turned out amazing!!
One of the MOST impractical makeovers I've seen to date from this girl. Does she EVEN read the comments??!! She really needs to get a clue....
I TOTALLY LOVE YOUR WHOLE GET DOWN AND I WAS SURPRISED BY THE NEGATIVE COMMENTS! IM A FAN AND HOPE YOU CONTINUE TO CREATE MORE BEAUTIFUL SPACES!
absolutely loveeeee that hanging clothes rack idea!!
It's cute, right?!
My living room has zero overhead lights, that bracket lamp hack is amazing
Amazing approach to a tiny room!
Lipstick looks great, btw.
Absolutely love the green painted wall in Dan's bedroom. I did the same in my living room. Love your makeovers. Both you and Dan are very talented.
You make a very good point about night stands... mine is definitely always cluttered with stuff I don't need. This is really making me rethink the bedroom I'm putting together!
or just clean out your nightstand and try and make a habit of not putting things there
You remind me of Pam from The Office and I love it 😂💛
"Black, white and super minimal" ....Olivia is my style icon👌
Uhm.....if you put a tray top of the basket, you can actually use the interior for storage.
It seems like she was really happy with the result and it looks much better than it did before so I don't see the issue here.
Love how excited she was. I love this
I love that although it was very minimal style, it was still a little eclectic and a little glam~ ♡
I love you talked about the Budget for the room makeover. I would love if you include that in your new videos. Like a total budget and where you came in at and maybe a running total along the side? Please please
Sister loved it !!
2:20 you can see her question her entire relationship with her sister 😂😂
I read the comments before watching the video so I just fast forward it to the end. Good god... 😂😂😂
Just clean it and leave it empty 😆 Voila! Minimal makeover!
I love watching your videos. You are so lovely and funny. Loved your goodbyes lol! I really like the changes to you sister's room. My favourite is the makeup area.
Well as long as her sister likes it that’s all that matters 😍
I really love the makeover as always 😃
This is EXACTLY what i needed that i didn't know i needed!
#11 Your sister wanted to hug you so bad ... I would have!!! Beautiful!💕
Minimalist aesthetic and minimalism: 2 different things.
Atleast that's what the comments on this video has taught me.
The basket is still a bed side table... just because it's a basket upside down doesn't mean it won't get cluttered and full of useless stuff. The book stack was probably better ... just saying
This is actually freaking beautiful, I love it
I am glad her sister loves it still, even tho it is a different style. But Alexandra definitely did not listen to what her sister wanted.... it is more boho. Her sister wanted more scandinavian style!I would feel misunderstood and not listened too if I was her sister to be honest.
Oh, this is really cool!
But there is a question ... How to remove dust from all this ... and not to sweat?
Is it possible to just wash?
Should redo with black and white clean lines as sister desired. Where did Audrey pic go?
Thanks for all your creative designs!
“Well done you” 🤣 sounds like me talking to my sister lol! Love this!
It is her sister... She probably knows her better than we do. All we got is one picture.
It looks WAY better! Less cluttered now
This was great. I loved the transformation, it looks cozy and minimalist!! Definitely subbing.
