Nicolas T If you have a good GPU then I would just keep it stock..because its good at stock clockspeed already. If you have games that are making your system struggle then I would overclock if you can keep it cool. Just remember the power consumption will rise. also make sure you have a good psu
God, I remember building a LAN party ITX pc with the G3258 in 2015. Got mine up to 4.7 GHz. Paired with a GTX 950 it was a sweet little rig for esports titles. Only swapped the CPU after my friends and I got heavily into Battlefield 1, which was just too much for the poor thing.
Suhkma Dheek Thanks, I've been meaning to OC but was kinda afraid to because I wasn't sure if I needed the right bios for my mobo to unlock since it's an asus H97M-E as opposed to a z97. Thanks again though.
Once I had a 670 and a 560 in my system at the same time (coin mining) and I ran 3dmark. It used the 670 but reported the score as being for the 560. As a result, I have the world's highest GTX 560 score on 3dmark 11.
wtf with that laugh at the beggining? I've got mixed feelings, enjoyed but got a little scared...nice, nice! Awesome video btw, really like your videos =)
True story: I don't know why he did that laugh in the beginning or what he wanted done to it originally and thought it would be funny to make the scary thing as a private video for a laugh. He said I could keep it in so I did.
you mean the base rate? If you remove parasympathetic control on the heart (some people do have this condition for one reason or the other), it goes up to ~100 bpm. If you mean on as-needed base, it already does.
TDR REVENGE When I OC at all (even the "Asus Optimal" option in the UEFI, which is supposed to be safe for any setup, I idle at 50C. I got better temps with the stock cooler. When I first put in the H100i it was blinking red on the block. I unplugged the SATA power connector and plugged it back in and it seemed fine. So either the pump doesn't work correctly or I have it seated completely wrong. I'm about to re-seat the block to see what that does. This is ridiculous.
TDR REVENGE Maybe you can help. I took the block off the cpu, took the cpu off the mobo, put a dab of Arctic Silver 5 on the cpu, put the block back on, and it's better now. But only slightly. My idle temps are fine (30C-ish) but even on stock frequencies I hit the high 60s running cinebench. Prime95 crashes the PC. The fans on the rad are maxed out and its still overheating. The pump is obviously running since the idle temps are okay, but maybe not the way it should be? This is my first cooler that isn't air. Anything over 1.225 volts makes my PC crash almost instantly under load and get really hot. The stock cooler could handle this fine
TDR REVENGE I just tried running again. I'm at 4.6GHz @ 1.275 volts. 4 runs of cinebench got my cpu up to 72C and a score of 691cb. That just seems pretty warm to me. It's better than what I was getting last night though.
Back in the days of pentium 3. I had a 550, but "operation flashpoint" was running very slow, so i read about OC in a magazine, and put it to 750mhz, i had better fps, and won the game... A few days later, the CPU died because of temperature, Those slot 1 Cpu´s were really bad.
stock voltage for 4,5 GHz allcore as everyday profile at cool temps, sometimes in winter im using a 4,8GHZ OC at 1,33V but barely since i felt never safe with 75 degrees+ (bad 92mm designer cooler....) 4,5 GHz is easily the sweetspot for mine, sure 4,6 or 4,7 would be also efficient and cool enough maybe, but since it doesnt increase performance and the real benefits of OC were on Ram OC side.... im going with a cooler CPU for more Ram OC headroom. running 2400MHz CL10 with 2666 and lowered subtimings at i think +0,2V so 1,7V, the Ram OC is in most cases more useful than 200-300MHz on the CPU core clock and i think in overall much safer.
+RALF SMASH its all different.. your CPU may clock higher.. or less than mine. The best thing to do is start at 4.5 at 1.25volts and slowly work your way up
Just finished building my PC with the 4790k and the overclocking it so good. Thanks LinusTechTips, just bought a 4790k and plugged it into a new ASUS Maximus VII Ranger. Even stock I'm loving it, but will be looking at clocking it soon, when I have time :) I did have a little play and got to 4.7, and it got a little warm so have backed it down to 4.5 for now...
Your videos helped me configure my latest gaming rig. Spent about 1400 Euros (close to 2k$), but it was definitely worth it. Your videos definitely helped me decide on a few components though (got myself the i7 4790K on a msi Z97 G43 board.
TDR REVENGE Yet the price is still there with Intel, I love both AMD and Intel they each have their areas that they shine, but if you want to build a great budget rig you never go Intel, yet the G3258... that's tempting now. damn me and my inability to choose oh well more money to the corporations...lol

the difference between 1333 and 1600 is almost not relevant in any application, and if you're talking about gaming then the difference between 1333 and 2400mhz might be like 1-2 fps maybe might not even be that much lol
The i7 is literally an i5 with 4 fake cores added onto it and another $100 slapped onto the price tag. If your theory that "more cores means more fps" is true then why does the FX 8350 have shittier performance than a 3rd gen i3? Getting an i5 for $200 and spending the other 100 on a better graphic card like a GTX 970 is the optimal solution for any gaming build regardless of budget.
Pressed like as soon as I heard the nanobii opening sequence... Nice informative guide though, Linus. Also, thank you based editor for the nightmare fuel at 1:00
Funny enough i have both these chips, the 4790k i took out of my old build for the new one im putting together,to replace it with the g2358.I want t o keep the old build as a back up but still make it decent so i took my first shot at overclocking(the g2358),have to say i did a damn good job lol. Most i got out of it was 45 GHZ AT 1.268 volts,70 celcius on prime 95(air cooler 212 evo)when i went to 46 GHZ i last had 1.298 volts and was still BSOD'ing,i decided that was enough. And for sh*tz and giggles i tried asus suite, and you were right about not feeling comfortable with the voltages, they had me at 1.5 volts on 47 GHZ.I just want to say thanks linus for your vids! very helpful...and enjoy the slight comedy you add to your vids! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
Thanks Linus, I already bought the Pentium G3258 and I was able to get 4.3GHz with 1.25 volts ans temp around 55 degrees at full load on B85 asus chipset! Very informative vid!
Great guide! I find the Asus AI suite more useful for figuring a baseline overclock for various chips. For example, using it, my 4670k would peak out at 4.6ghz, one of my 4770ks at 4.8, and my other one at 4.2ghz. Using that tool makes binning much easier and quicker!
The irony of me finding this video looking into overclocking details. I started watching LTT like afew months ago. Had no idea they had a video for this.
Love them ASUS WS boards. Did the P8P67 WS Evolution a while back for a 2600K build. Chose it because I wanted an epic watercooled, sleeved etc etc build, that WASNT RED AND BLACK. That board was black and blue, and made for a dope platform. Still overclocked the chip to 4.6ghz no problem on barely any extra voltage.
Linus I have to complement your team on the production value of this video. It was excellent, felt very polished and enjoyable to watch. Keep up the good work. Maybe reward them with air conditioning ;)
Wow. That individual core overclock setting would be amazing for audio production. Never overclocked before....but after seeing what u can do I'm seriously interested in the individual cores. For audio production all cores and hyper threads are used but usually the 1st core spikes before the rest...like 90% of the time. It's bc record enabled tracks seem to load everything on that track (plugins, effects, etc) on the 1st core. Only when you stop playback and create a empty track does the load get spread among other cores. Really see the advantage of slightly speeding up that 1st core for my needs.
Nice Linus. I'll definitely use this when I pick up my Devil's Canyon in a couple weeks. Hopefully I can translate what you do to my G5 Sniper motherboard.
A good way to save time when overclocking, is to look at a number of other overclocks. e.g., if on average you see people getting 4.7GHz on the CPU, then you may want to start at their voltage and around 100-200MHz below their speed, then test for stability. If stable, then increase the clock speed a little, and then test again Once you reach your max overclock at the max safe voltage (keeping an eye on temperatures), then begin lowering the voltage slightly and test for stability. Once you find a voltage that does not fail within 3 hours, then do a 24 hour+ stability test. (the reason behind this is that there are overclocks which will not become stable no matter how much voltage you pump into the CPU. so it is possible to get a CPU stable at 5GHz with 1.35V, but 5.1 may be unstable, even if you pump like 1.4+V into it. I like to spend a day finding the max speed, and then another day+ stability testing. (and then if needed, I will spend another day overclocking the RAM) If you build a gaming PC, then you must overclock everything that you can safely overclock as long as it leads to better benchmarks. Overclocking is largely a free performance boost, thus, you must not pass up on the opportunity to do so.
I'm gonna have to watch this a few times haha. He was going through it a little fast for me, probably becauseI've never OC'd before. Great video though! I will be referencing it often.
This video is SO good. It must have taken days to edit and put together. Well done!
i just got a I7 4790k with a h100i what should i overclock too :)
Nicolas T well what do you need the overclock for?
video editing - gaming
Nicolas T If you have a good GPU then I would just keep it stock..because its good at stock clockspeed already. If you have games that are making your system struggle then I would overclock if you can keep it cool. Just remember the power consumption will rise. also make sure you have a good psu
Part 1:00 though, lol
Funny story: My friend tried to overclock his laptop and managed to draw 200+W and burn out his battery and power supply.
I'm surprised he didn't burn out his chip first xD
Howmuch volts was he pulling from it?!?!?

i really miss this kind of intro video editing, it looked more professional imo
me too i love this intro lol
ichi tensho They'd usually do this for sponsored videos
This looked like intel branding stuff. I doubt they did this themselves and if they did, would be spensive and time consuming for a simple intro.
Comparing this to his videos nowadays makes one thing very clear: he slows the hell down/isn’t on caffeine anymore
You misspelled coke
Honestly I think Linus would benefit from this talking speed as I speed up his videos these days and view time is important

+Science Studio Most likely a capture card
I commented that months before I subscribed to that channel

I'm assuming Edzel did the intro (could be wrong) but if you did, you really did out do yourself here, quite amazing.
God I loved that intro
The visuals and the music were a feast

I overclocked my i7 so much, that I went back in time
I overclocked my 4790k so hard that i was already in 2015 5 years ahead of its time :)

well admit it, if you don't over clock a g3258 at all, you are doing something wrong with your life
i haven't overclocked mine and its a piece of shit tempted to buy a new one but after seeing this may as well just overclock it
Suhkma Dheek any good guides on how to do it? This one is more for the i7

Edzel Yago Completely random I guess. But very good editing anyway, thanks for the reply!
Edzel Yago 2spooky
clearly he missed the chance to make a 'sonic gotta go fast' reference, that would have been better
Beautiful editing as usual Edzel love it. Keep up the awesome work man. Cheers.
One day we'll be able to overclock our hearts...
That'll be a sight.
I wouldn't want that because you would be stronger but you would live shorter. :C
you mean the base rate? If you remove parasympathetic control on the heart (some people do have this condition for one reason or the other), it goes up to ~100 bpm. If you mean on as-needed base, it already does.
Get a pacemaker and overclock that, I don't see what the point of that would be but your choice.
Makes no sence, your heart just beats as hart as it needs to. It goes up and down all the time.
people do that already by working out and drinking energy drinks
I'm so glad this came out today! My H100i should be here in from Newegg in about an hour and I can OC my 4690k!

wow ....Low temps. My 3770k hits 70°C at 4.1GHz
4790k has a new termal interface and its just better in cooling, thats why its cooler than your 3770k.
so it seems
Tomas My 4790k on high games can go to nearly 80° with a big cooler, might change to a corsair h100 or H105 but i don't want to loose my rig from a leakage
MyPix It is almost impossible for closed loop Liquid coolers to leak
MyPix my 4790k doesnt go over 70°C , i have a phanteks cooler for 40€
Can we really call it a BIOS anymore? After all, it is hardly basic these days.
do you even know what bios means?
Kyzer Buhnzi basic integrated operating system
Kyzer Buhnzi Basic input output system
+Kyzer Buhnzi lol seems you dont

My first CPU was a G3258. I overclocked that thing to do around 4Ghz and got some good gaming and productivity work back in the day. good times.
I didn't wanna sleep anyway 1:00
why no i5 4690k
exact same steps
k
is it Rainbow Road by nanobii?
I think it is
oh god
Hahaha Intel seems to love Monstercat
It's actually Linus Media Group that love Monstercat
SKBreakDaRules Me specifically. =D
Got 2 days ago a G3258 new for $59,95 after frying my i7 4790k. I must say im impressed with it, got to 4.7ghz at 1.31v stable! What an amazing chip!
Love that you're using the same SSD as I do. It's an SSD that provides amazing performance for low prices.
1:00 Thanks, didnt need to sleep anyways.
The i7 is required for a good gaming experience. All you pentium, i3, and i5 users are just in denial and can't get on the i7 level.
An i5 does pretty fine for gaming i7 was not made for gaming -,-
Spifir3_43 Lyr4-FTW Lol you said pretty fine. The i7 WRECKS ALL GAMES
Mortal Wombat I never said that more cores=more power. The i7 is just better overall.
Maddog hahaha this guy if you say so
So umm only ASUS is good? =P
ネーナ・トリニティ MSI makes some good OCing boards as well, and they're a lot cheaper that ASUS ones. Check out the H81M-P33 and M-E33 boards
Pressed like as soon as I heard the nanobii opening sequence... Nice informative guide though, Linus. Also, thank you based editor for the nightmare fuel at 1:00
damn LinusTechTips the intros and outros always impress me. big up to the editor, they're awesome
1:00 .... what the fuck
Im really glad you guys did this, I saw your video on the pentium and I was hoping to buy it and OC it at a later date. So, this was perfect.
Really nice editing! Great sound effect on the start and the end. Cool CPU graphs
Just got a new pc with Intel Pentium G3258@ 3.2Ghz. Awesome CPU for the money and overclock at 3.6 right now and runs like a dream.
Thanks Linus, I already bought the Pentium G3258 and I was able to get 4.3GHz with 1.25 volts ans temp around 55 degrees at full load on B85 asus chipset! Very informative vid!
October 2022, upgrade from 4430 to 4790k. Boy windows 10 is fun with this thing 😄.
Thank you Linus. You helped me out a lot. Was scared to try this before but with your help you helped me out so much! You're awesome keep it up.
This dude is king. This a must guide for overlooking. Thanks guys for creating a very good video about overlooking.
new intro/outro is legit. i like it guys.
Loved the intro and credits. Good job guys.
My i5-2500k running strong at 4.8 GHz OC since the day I bought it in 2011, that chip is still to this day such a beast. :D
To whomever it was that did them, I love the approach on the simplistic, clean graphical visual aesthetic of the opening and closing of the episode
Yep!
GJ Edzell! Love your approach to the visual aesthetics! :D
Great guide! I find the Asus AI suite more useful for figuring a baseline overclock for various chips. For example, using it, my 4670k would peak out at 4.6ghz, one of my 4770ks at 4.8, and my other one at 4.2ghz. Using that tool makes binning much easier and quicker!
best intro on YT period
The irony of me finding this video looking into overclocking details. I started watching LTT like afew months ago. Had no idea they had a video for this.
Production team is getting better, thumbs up. Lionus
Beautiful intro, well worded, simple, and easy to follow video. Kudos.
I like the way you guys did the beginning of that video pretty cool!
I really like these guides, keep them coming!
Awesome video by the way, watched both guides! VERY helpful.
(and then if needed, I will spend another day overclocking the RAM)
If you build a gaming PC, then you must overclock everything that you can safely overclock as long as it leads to better benchmarks. Overclocking is largely a free performance boost, thus, you must not pass up on the opportunity to do so.
The intro was really nice and cool!
I'm gonna have to watch this a few times haha. He was going through it a little fast for me, probably becauseI've never OC'd before. Great video though! I will be referencing it often.
Really loved the intro and outro!
Awesome editing job Edzel!
