For those who don't know. This is the story of WW1 . When britishers and germans celebrated Christmas together ,they had dinner together,sang together. They played football with each other and Hans wolf (German officer) decided that the one who will win in football match would win without any war.

The soldiers went out of their trenches, and started celebrating with each other (even with the enemies), sharing sweets and what else they had, and even played football.
so for context the christmas truce happened during WW1.the first to comense this truce were the germans lifting candles and singing carols now this harmless singing led to a literal stop to the war as some men even played football with the enemy troops.On a grand scale this shows the humanity of people back in the 20th century
after the truce the soldiers were relocated to different fronts because they refused to fight one another they built a bond and a deep friendship and understanding that they went against orders,
This happened because in July 1914 there was a world war, the Germans were hated by England, then the first world war broke out and then on December 24th the soldiers left the trenches

CONTEXT: This scene has been taken from the movie "All quite on the western front"(this is a mistake, read the edit) which depicts extremely harsh conditions while fighting in the trenches during WW1, however during the Christmas of 1914, the German forces wanted to celebrate the occasion, so they lit their lanterns and displayed them on the edge of their trenches, carol singing broke out. Soon enough the British and French troops joined in. Christmas greetings and well wishes were exchanged, and offers of a temporary ceasefire were communicated between the trenches. It was a truly a heartwarming moment in all of history. [edit : The scene isn't from AQOTWF, I was mistaken :(, it's actually from a commercial made by "Sainsbury's" 8 years before the remake was made]
