The Cost of Discipleship

  • What is the cost of discipleship as found in the gospels? Does the cost of discipleship only cost something, or does it cost nothing less than everything, according to Jesus?
In this video, Dr. Pitre covers the narratives in Luke 9 of the 3 people who approach Jesus who express interest in following Jesus and becoming a disciple, but still are attached to things of this world.
And, the interesting fact about this narrative is that Jesus does not just reject those who are attached to bad things -- this would be expected -- but he claims that those who are attached to the good things of this world -- like family and land -- above him are not worthy of the kingdom.
The cost of discipleship therefore -- at least according to Jesus -- is to cost everything.

This is an extremely powerful teaching. It is a game changer for me. At the level of choosing the Will of Jesus over family ties. Follow Me! Period. Going forward.

I have been homeless and still am, with no hope of having a home, any time soon, and I try to follow Yeshua/Jesus, but I don't think I do a very good job at it. I do not have or had very good parents and I do not love my sibling/half-siblings, family, that I do not see or am close with, which I did not choose for a life. Not everyone is blessed with a loving, good, Godly family, or two parents who cared, so please do not judge me from your world, I am not deeply attached to lands I do not have or parents who vagabonded/Abandoned, me in many ways and I have an only daughter who I do not see.. I do not have many possessions and just lost my car, which has left me in a bad state...I am in a severe state of spiritual warfare to the point, I would like to die most times in the last few years. I already committed to following Jesus, but it is a scary road at times. God Bless

Try and try again because failure is not option. You must push yourself to be successful and never give up. God is always with you but he would not like you giving up either so their theirs no other option but to go out and get it and become something in this life. Don't hold back the bad days but look forward for the good days. Please don't give up. Jesus Christ is with you but you cannot give up. Work ten times or a hundred times more and believe me you will be something. I do not know you and I can't comprehend what your going through but all I can say is don't give up and be successful if success is not meant for you then give the Glory and Praise to God that whatever you achieve through your success God will be praised by it. Believe in yourself and keep going always be ready to recieve Christ and he will give you the graces you pray for.

truly you are right! And the reason why there are Catholic Priest that backslide, and get married is because they can not follow Jesus when he said those who loves his parents, wife brothers and sisters are not worthy of me. So these Priest that renounced their vow of celibacy is not worthy to Jesus! And they are not the one said by Jesus that the one who accept this, should accept it! Mat. 19:11-12. Pls. read these.

Dr. Pitre it would've been nice to have gotten some pointers on how we can grow in the Virtues necessary to be that strong man for the Lord!
If the Lord requires it, I'm sure he will give us the grace to accomplish His Will,
    AS HE IS WORTHY!!!
Nevertheless that's a hard condition to follow. 😑😭

Are idols mentioned in the New Testament?
idolatry appears in New Testament vice lists (Gal 5:20; Col 3:5; 1 Pet 4:3; (1 Cor 5:10-11; 6:
    AND
What does Jesus say about idols?
John 5:21. Most NT letters contain final words of warning in their closing lines. Keep yourselves from idols means keep yourselves from trusting, obeying, revering, and following-that is, in effect, worshiping-anyone or anything other than God himself, and his Son Jesus Christ. Lev 21:8). Idolatrous Christians are among those who will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

I do not understand how a pastor can go preach and people to break God's law which are the 10 COMMANDMENTS and all the time they use Colossians 2:16 but they don't read 17 but if you read Leviticus 23:37-38 it will explain what Colossians 2:16 also on 2:17 it says these are a shadow of things to come pointing to Jesus but if that is not enough let's read 1John 2:3-6 3:22-24 5:2-3 2John 2:4-6 John 14:15 14:21 15:10 ,12 1Corinthians 7:19 14:37 for me to hear a pastor talk like that about our God's law that we don't have to keep his law which is the law that tells you if you are sinning should not be a pastor because what ever you teach true or not God will come back on you and believe me you don't want to have God mad at you there's is so many pastors that I hear we don't have to keep the Sabbath any more well you just call God a liar because he says we have to old testament and new testament so if I were you guys read the Bible closer repent and be free God bless you all

Reply to claim Catholics do not worship Mary
---If it's just honor, why are there multiple prayers dedicated to Mary? When you pray the rosary, why are there 10x as many prayers to Mary as Jesus, God, or the Holy Spirit? It sure feels like worship. Why would you ask Mary to intercede on your behalf instead of just praying to God or Jesus directly?
btw--where in the Holy Bible is there just one verse mentioning Mary praying to/with beads?
Where in the Holy Bible is there just one verse of Jesus teaching Mary or anyone to pray to/with beads?>???

    Sabbath Change
It was changed by Rome to differentiate between Christians and Jews and to give pagan tribute to the Sun. Look at the pope and his symbols of the sun.

THAT IS A WORTHLESS opinion with NO FACTS!! NO scripture!! NO Christian would ever worship on Sunday!!!
The ONLY way you think that is true is by taking verses OUT of Context!!!
      >>>quote---Christians observed Sunday, the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead.... unquote
QUOTE the COMMAND from GOD that Makes Sunday a Holy DAY!!!
It IS a man made holy day!!!

No saint can take Jesus’ place: “There is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). There is no one else who can mediate with God for us. Since Jesus is the only mediator, Mary and the saints cannot be mediators. Further, the Bible tells us that Jesus Christ Himself is interceding for us before the Father: “He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them” (Hebrews 7:25). With Jesus Himself interceding for us, why would we need Mary or the saints to intercede for us? Whom would God listen to more readily than His only begotten Son? Romans 8:26-27 says the Holy Spirit is also interceding for us. With the second and third Persons of the Trinity already interceding for us before the Father, why would we need to have Mary or the saints interceding for us?
Let us examine the claim that praying to Mary and the saints is no different than asking someone here on earth to pray for us:
    1) Asking other believers (on earth) to pray for us is certainly biblical (2 Corinthians 1:11; Ephesians 1:16; Philippians 1:19; 2 Timothy 1:3). The apostle Paul asks other Christians to pray for him in Ephesians 6:19.
    2) The Bible nowhere mentions anyone asking someone in heaven to pray for him or her. The Bible nowhere describes anyone in heaven praying for anyone on earth.
    3) The Bible gives absolutely no indication that Mary or the saints can hear our prayers. Mary and the saints are not omniscient. Even glorified in heaven, they are still finite beings with limitations. How could they possibly hear the prayers of millions of people?
    4) Whenever the Bible mentions praying to or speaking with the dead, it is in a negative context involving activities the Bible strongly condemns (Leviticus 20:27; Deuteronomy 18:10-13; 1 Samuel 28:7-19).
There is absolutely no scriptural basis to pray to anyone other than God alone. There is no need to, either. Jesus, our Intercessor, has it covered. No one in heaven can mediate on our behalf except for Jesus Christ. Only God can hear and answer prayer. The temple veil was torn in two (Hebrews 10:19-20); the child of God on earth has just as much access to God’s throne of grace, in Jesus’ name, as anyone in heaven (Hebrews 4:16).
