Team old school for me. I have the 1994 SR5 automatic V6 Toyota truck with 48,000 miles. It still looks new and drives like new. I will never sell it. So fun to drive and always get comments on how beautiful the truck is. But after 31 years, it is going to get a buddy with the Trailhunter. I hope it brings me as much joy as the 94 does.
My first car was a 1980 Toyota pickup. Got it in 1995 when I was 16. I bought it from my neighbor for $300, which I made from my job at McDonald's. It was pretty beat up, over 300k miles, full of rust, and a rebuilt engine. I loved that old truck.
That old Toy looks sooooo much better...First new vehicle I ever bought ,86, 5 speed 22r engine...tough as nails , country kid putting her through the woods fields and mud!!! never flinched..2nd only to my 2000 Silverado....almost 200,000 mile and still purrs..has never once left me stramded...ever in 24..almost 25 yrs now..these new trucks and cars are ALL chips and motherboards just waiting to have light on dash go on ....
Team old school. My 1st Toyota P/U was a 1984 SR5 single cab with the 22R 4 cylinder. It was the last year of the solid axle front with manual lockers. Best truck ever and I paid brand new 14,000
@@2shoestoo my dad bought an 84 brand new, but it was a real stripper with white steel wheels. We were so proud of that thing we nearly polished the paint off of it
@ I probably would have liked your Dad. Nothing like a 80s Toyota p/u and a can of turtle wax drinking a couple of beers 🍻. That’s how you define buddies!
Old school for sure, but man the 4 door hilux would've been great back in the day. I remember seeing one in Panama and was like " whats that thing?" Lol
My 1990 Toyota V6 Extra cab DR5 4WD was my second Toyota purchased in 1995, great truck and drove it all over Baja off roads at the Score International Races!! You just took me down my younger memory lane days. 👈✌️
Maybe your best video, sir. I owned a used 1994 extended cab for a while (same gen as the '89). Looking back, it had to be top of the line - with power everything, moonroof and a factory CD player. 6 cyl A/T. Color was black with funky teal green stripes up its side. The V6 had very little get up and go, but certainly trouble free starting and driving. Sadly, it succumbed to frame rust - and I was forced moved on.
I used to have an old Toyota Pickup Truck, the Tacoma before Tavoma was a thing. I'm definitely team old school here; the thing was a beater and could barely get out of its own way, but it could go on the freeway and was pretty durable. What killed it was a bad clutch repair that slowly degraded the transmission and the starter. It went into a ditch before we owned it, and the shop botched the repair; the clutch needed to be in a certain position to even start. Eventually, the thing just wouldn't start anymore. My 05 Tundra took its place after we sold the old truck to someone. I bet you the engine would still run.
The longer time goes on, the better these old Toyotas look! I've got a '98 Tacoma 4x4 but it doesn't look as good as the original Toyota 4x4 Truck on the left.
At 17 I bought a 1986 regular cab 4wd with a 22R 4 cylinder for $6400 cash. I busted my a@@ working putting up hay for two seasons and worked at a restaurant after school and on the weekends to save the money. Put some crome Cragar wheels with white letter tires on it and a killer stereo in it. I can tell you from first-hand experience that in the 80s a nice ride and some money in your pocket will get the best girls' attention.
This reminded me of a AAA service truck I just saw recently. It was an 02-04 Tacoma that still looked in great shape. Have no idea how it’s still running around as a work truck after all these years when everything else I see are brand new (or less than 3 year old) F-150s or Lightnings. Wonder if the employee assigned to that truck was just so diehard about keeping it that they didn’t want to “upgrade.”
I’d love to see the old one remade with a modest touch of modern improvements, such as disc brakes, and the interior plastics using modern formulas that don’t crack or degrade in the heat after 10 years. If there was some reasonable deregulation, I’m sure companies would pop up that would made restomods of these awesome old vehicles. But in places like CA, you can’t do $hit.
My first new vehicle purchase was a 1986 Toyota 4x4 extra cab with the 22re, I put a camper shell on it and a good set of BFG all terrain tires, great little truck, but a few years in Boston killed it, everything from the radiator and radiator support to the rear brakes just rusted away.
I'm very curious how a vehicle with the oldschool proportions, size and minimalist features would actually sell in todays market. The new Pro looks badass, but the old school really speaks to me.
It's crazy how less capable the new ones have gotten. The old 1989 Pickup came from factory with 42 degree approach angle on 31 inch tires. Also the difference in clearance from the front bumper is more than twice the height of the new Tacoma. Also look at the difference in body clearance. The old pickup had nearly 16 inches of ground clearance when measured from the center diff and 9.1 inches from the rear diff.
I remember back in high school I’d drive to Toyota dealerships and look at the Tacoma and I was in love with it and wanted it so bad. Looking at it now boy has it evolved. I don’t know what I was thinking. Not a fan these days
Have had and do still have several of theses truck. So all school all the way. Doesn't hurt that i have that exact same truck too. No where near that nice though! No longer have the 3.0 as it decided to finally die at 275K. Was a good excuse to drop in a 3.4 supercharged engine 😁
I was just thinking to myself, is he going to miss the clutch start cancel button... I have both a 1990 V6 base model with 190,000 miles on it, (still haven't had any gasket issues with it) and a 2024 TRD Sport.
94 Toyota Pick up and 3rd Gen Tacoma owner the older ones are just better in every way not as fast or powerful but man them 22re's are soooooo easy to work on. But can't hate in the new.
Have a 24 Tacoma with a manual transmission and I would gladly and readily swap it straight up for that old school Tacoma, provided the new owner would pick up the loan on the 24 as well
I understand the nostalgia as I wanted the Marty McFly Toyota pick up when I first saw the movie as a kid. The new tech is going to be better in my opinion. Better mpg, horsepower, tech, comfort, more safety features. I would say new is better.
Man they don't make vehicles like they used to huh? Check Out Our 4G Tacoma Forum: 4gtaco.com
no...they dont dude....
Team old school
Team old school. That 89 is bad ass.
Man that old one looks beautiful.
I wish they’d stop making trucks bigger! That little truck is perfect in the woods
completely agree
Unless your trying to get kids in car seats in the rear seat
Old school for me !
My dad still owns one of those 1986 Toyota pickups and he has 47k miles on it. That thing is a beast.
47k damn that’s gonna be here longer then us
@visu550 yeah he used it a lot when he was Active Duty, but he's had zero issues with it.
Can't sit in the rear seat of either one lol
Underrated comment
Got me laughing out loud on that one
Facts😂
2024 RETRO Tacoma: for better and worse
The older your Toyota is, the better off you are.

That red SR5 is sweet
Man, brings me back to my first 91. Love that truck! Wishing I still had it 😢
Team Old School. I still have an 88 and 94 pickup
My first car was a 1980 Toyota pickup. Got it in 1995 when I was 16. I bought it from my neighbor for $300, which I made from my job at McDonald's. It was pretty beat up, over 300k miles, full of rust, and a rebuilt engine. I loved that old truck.
Two doors with the manual is my jam! 🤙
I owned that older truck. I had a 92 4x4…. I would buy that one again all day long and over the 4th gen any day!
Old school definitely 💯 it’s just a beautiful pickup. Small and simple. Can’t go wrong.
As a 2024 Tacoma owner, I would rather have the old one. That is one beautiful truck!!
Same for me, I have a 24 with a manual transmission. I love my truck, but I would swap it straight up for the old one.

Old school. I had a 1994 Black 4X4 extra cab, 5 speed. Great pick up!
Old school for sure with the 5 speed manual.
The new Tacoma is the size of a 90’s full size truck
The backseat brings back memories of my kids, when they were little, hitting there heads on the back plastic every time I hit a bump lol.
I’ll always have a soft spot for the old school trucks but in terms of daily performance, give me a modern truck all day every day lol
I’ve drove a 99’ SR5 4x4 (1st gen) for 18 yrs and currently drive a 17’ TRD PRO (3rd gen). Both have been great trucks!
Team New school! I’ve driven older Toyotas all my life, time for the new tech and power for me! Will always love the old trucks from Toyota.
Great job on the video Jon! Thanks for making it.
Awesome. Would be tough to choose the new one over that clean of an older model.
I have a 1993 Toyota Pickup (essentially right before the Tacoma was a thing) and a 2022 Tacoma. I love both.
Love those old wheels!
Old school for sure, but man the 4 door hilux would've been great back in the day. I remember seeing one in Panama and was like " whats that thing?" Lol
They still have them in central america. White, manual, diesel, with a locker. Everything you need, nothing you don't.
@@hugolafhugolaf They have them everywhere except the US. Hilux is still sold today.
@@westcoastplinkin6559 And except Canada.
I love the old style pickup, but really love the tech of the new generation. Give me a combination of both
Thats gonna be a Nissan Frontier
drove the toyota sr5 in highscool. Seats were awesome. 5 speed manual. Wicked truck.
Bought a red 91 regular cab 4x4 base model brand new for $14,300. Plowed snow and pulled a trailer for years
Workhorse for sure!
My 1990 Toyota V6 Extra cab DR5 4WD was my second Toyota purchased in 1995, great truck and drove it all over Baja off roads at the Score International Races!! You just took me down my younger memory lane days. 👈✌️
My very first Toyota purchase was that exact same truck, except in black. Drove it for 10 years, then went to a 4Runner. Wish I still had my 89.
My friend had a maroon 1990 4wd extra cab. Had manual locking hubs. That truck was cool af.
I bought one new in 90, they were 12900 for that same truck
Those old school Toyota trucks are so classic!
I always liked that body style the best!
It’s a classic for sure.
oh mannn had that year in high school, loved it
I also had a 95 sr5 4 runner, I put about 350,000 miles on it. It was a beast. I hope I get more out of my 2016 4 runner, we will see.

Team old school it doesn’t have backseat doesn’t need it . Looks amazing
Both trucks are awesome but that ‘89 is super cool!
The original is all you need!!! Man I wish they still made them just like that and never changed!

I need the TRD Pro for those runs I make to Lowe's for a bag of potting soil.
The longer time goes on, the better these old Toyotas look! I've got a '98 Tacoma 4x4 but it doesn't look as good as the original Toyota 4x4 Truck on the left.
Old school and its not even a question.
I have had an 87,89,92,95,08,16,21 and now a 24 and the 24 on a different level, that being said an 82 4x4 would be my dream Toyota
old school big time!
The old school options were great. That specific model you had the option of IFS or solid axle. Hopefully one day Toyota will bring back that option.
Old School. Basic needs that work. No gimmicks.
Looks like older Tacoma has better ground clearance than todays TRD Pro. Those older OG wheels are nice. I prefer the older Tacoma
At 17 I bought a 1986 regular cab 4wd with a 22R 4 cylinder for $6400 cash. I'm Team Middle School. I had a 1999 4Runner and you can't beat that. Like, ever.
I dunno. My 1997 LandCruiser would give it a run for it's money ;)
@ Hmmmm… interesting debate!
That square body is sick.
Give me old school all day every day

Have a 90’ 22re. Seen so much abuse sometimes makes new sounds but it’s fixes itself. Never selling it.
Love this!!
Old school for sure. Older toyotas are something special
Team "Por qué no los dos?" I have a 92 2WD and my 24 Off Road, I truly love both trucks
I'm very curious how a vehicle with the oldschool proportions, size and minimalist features would actually sell in todays market. The new Pro looks badass, but the old school really speaks to me.

I depends on the capability needed. That’s just Off road specs though.
I had an ‘89 V6 4x4. That thing ate timing belts. Every time the belt would go you were looking at a new water pump as well.
Obviously installed wrong somehow.
that pickup is fresh!
I remember back in high school I’d drive to Toyota dealerships and look at the Tacoma and I was in love with it and wanted it so bad. Looking at it now boy has it evolved. I don’t know what I was thinking. Not a fan these days

Had me 1990 Regular cab V6 4x4 5 speed and pretty much that same truck but a 1993, both in that exact red color.
Those are classics.
Team old school . 👍Much simpler and easier to work on . Plus they where built much more sold .

Old school is so nice and would out sell the new one if it were available today
Those Toyotas in 90 would be on sale for 12900 for sr5 and 14900 for limited if I remember, I got the sr5 in grey
Old school ❤❤❤
OLD SCHOOL Not even close BOOM!
94 Toyota Pick up and 3rd Gen Tacoma owner the older ones are just better in every way not as fast or powerful but man them 22re's are soooooo easy to work on. But can't hate in the new.

Nice old school Tacoma and affordable price to buy.
Damn I miss my 86 turbo regular cab.
Twilted is my new word😂
Wish they had the prerunner beside the old one
I understand the nostalgia as I wanted the Marty McFly Toyota pick up when I first saw the movie as a kid. The new tech is going to be better in my opinion. Better mpg, horsepower, tech, comfort, more safety features. I would say new is better.
I like the look of the new one but the old one is probably better!
Old one has more seating room in back!
Crazy to see how far Toyota pickups have come since 1989-back then, it cost $18K, which is about $45K in today’s dollars adjusting for inflation.
My first toyota pickup was 1981 4x4 long bed i brought it brand new i wish I still had it now I have a 2024 tacoma trail hunter
If you compared the new pre runner to the old truck it would be a proper comparison
Can we order without the fancy shocks?
That little toyota is nice.
