How to Eat: Ethiopian cuisine is hands-on
Don’t bother with cutlery. Eating from a shared platter is all about friends and family bonds.
This is part of a weekly series in which reporter Aparita Bhandari explores how to eat the different cuisines that make up Toronto’s diverse culinary landscape.
The best way to describe a traditional Ethiopian meal is a feast. After all, tradition calls for eating the food communally, with family and friends sharing a large platter of the staples that make up this cuisine. And so, the meal is a literal feast, as well as a feast for the eyes and palate.
When you’re eating off of the same plate as everyone else and using your hands, things could get tricky. Who goes first? Does everyone wait their turn? Do you use your left hand, right hand - maybe both?
Eden Hagos, founder of the Black Foodie blog, guided me through it all at Ethiopiques Restaurant in downtown Toronto.
The philosophy
The idea behind eating from the same plate illustrates the deep ties that bind family and friends, Hagos says.
“It’s to show our love for each other,” she says.
After we sit down at our table, owner and chef Enat Gulelat arrives with a large platter covered with food. It’s covered in injera, the traditional Ethiopian bread made with teff flour (the grain is particular to Ethiopia). Injera is a spongy bread with a slight sour taste. A little tricky to handle, injera adds texture and a measure of tang to the meal. On top are heaps of doro wat (chicken stew), misir (spiced lentils), kitfo (steak tartare), ayib (homemade cottage cheese), gomen (greens), key wot (beef stew), shiro (stew made from ground chickpeas and Ethiopian spices) and salad. There’s also an additional dish of cha cha tibs (sautéed lamb short ribs) and condiments including awaze (hot sauce made from berbere spice blend) and mitmita (a spicy pepper blend in powder form). The food is not particularly spicy in itself, but the condiments add a pleasant kick to the meal.
There’s so much here, you could feed a crowd and still have leftovers. And there’s something for every sensitive eater - that includes vegetarians, vegans and gluten-free types (teff is said to be gluten-free).

i went on a 1st date with a young lady (40s) from Ethiopia and she started feeding me. at first i felt weird until she explained what its all about, then i sat back and enjoyed the experience. we were at a Greek restaurant so we got some strange looks from people there.👀👀👀.
You're one lucky dude
Why did you feel the need to include her age (40's)? Are still dating her now? Doubt it.

Salman Ahmed march....said back to the car.. Bart said i wish lived in Ethiopia..ha ha ha
Do Ethiopians ever eat any of their foods using spoons, forks, or knives? I would not want to share a plate of food with others like in this video because I have a fear of getting other people germs. LOL I was at the a grocery store the other day and I ordered something from the the hot bar. The young man did not put on gloves and I had to bring it to his attention. The other staff members behind the hot bar were wearing gloves. I eat hot dogs and hamburgers using my hands and sometimes fried chicken. LOL I have a lot of Ethiopian neighbors and I must learn more about their culture, and why so many Ethiopians have come to the United States or Washington, DC. I heard there has been a war in Ethiopia for years along with poverty. I do know, many of the Ethiopians living in the Washington, D.C. are well educated, and many have college degrees.
Carlos Bright it is Ethiopian culture to eat with hand but if you prefer to use spoon, you can have that as well. Also, you can order individual plate if that pleased you. As Ethiopian, we don’t eat always together but when we do, we do it with family members or close friends. There is specific way of holding the Injera( the flat bread) to attach the different kinds of sauces. Believe me, using ur hand is more sanitary than using utensils at any restaurants.
Go away habesha troll, you are acting like an American!!
You wrote this comment twice. Ethiopians always used spoons, forks and knives go eat soup, porridge and for eating burrindo(beef steaks). Just not for injera.
I would call your comment backhanded compliment to ethiopian,Mexican,Pakistani, indian community who basically have the same table manners

Nice
would I be allow to eat using utensils?
KA Ka actually you can but you need to have your own plate. Also the flat bread(injera) is difficult to deep it in the stew or other varities with fork or spoon.
wow I like it
I love food
I am sorry, I dont buy the literal meaning of 'gursha' as 'feeding each other.'
It starts with the symbolic dish in a circle, notion of community/ familiness and in the family/ community you always expect, not only eating, but having communion. Then Gursha give it spiritual meaning to that togetherness- an act/ disposition of respect, closeness and love for that particular fellow person/s enagged in the act of eating together. I am sorry I disagree with the literal meaning of 'feeding one another.
In case I dine outside {Hotel}, I may invite someone close to my seat [whome I dont know, but waiting to eat or whatever] to eat withme when my meal was served. In this case, I will not give him/ her gursha!
Just curious, how much did this plate cost? In the US, I would say $50 USD. In Ethiopia, I would say it's 1/10th of this.
guess round about 15 bucks
In US
It's funny how that Ethiopian woman is telling the Indian woman how to eat with hands. 😂 I mean indians eat with their hands all the time 😎

So Ethiopian food goodness

"don't lick your fingers when you're sharing a platter"
OR maybe just use utensils?
What the name ?lol
Ethiopian food is nothing like Indian food, it is only similar in that you use a kind of bread and eat off a communal pan. The bread is normally made from teff a small grain. Bread is like a soggy sour pancake. You have to be raised on it. Even some Ethiopians find it upsets there stomach because it's fermented for 3 days. The Ethiopian food you get in Canada is sometimes not like the stuff you get in Africa. Having travelled lots and i love lots of food. however, don't like Ethiopian food. I don't like the mix of spices. visitors who say they love Ethiopian food have probably not tried the real stuff. Ethiopia, when compared to other African countries, has a unique culture. It is very old (Ethiopia is mentioned in the Bible) It's not like English or French Africa. You can get great coffee in Ethiopia but not like this. You should go through the ceremony for the experience, but, if done like in the rural areas, it's like mud. ground by hand, no filter ----yuk. If it's the middle of the day, and you need a pick me up.. hey it's great in the village, but more as a welcome and as a pick-me-up. YOu won't be doing it every day for a decent cup of coffee. Got to a local coffee place (which uses starbucks colours.. and a circular symbol! Copyright infringement much! Order a Maciado -- cheap and fantastic. They won't always give you thee cups of coffee never saw that in Ethiopia, but that is very true in West Africa where they make sweet mint tea in the desert. Ethiopia is a great place to visit. Though the government is very controlling, but better than some African places.
Ethiopia the country is not mentioned in the bible, since biblical Ethiopia only means Land of Cush old testament which refers only to the Kingdom of kush in Sudan
You guys are so shameless tryna steal Sudanese history
The country ethiopia, which is facing the largest civil war in the world as we speak, didn't even exist in documented history when the bible was written over a few millenia ago...even aksum and abyssinia are thr only name which modern ethiopia used from the 1st century CE to the 19th century
@@hassanabdikarimmohamed2505 Of course a Soomaali, always bashing Ethiopia and it's people.
Ethiopians have been calling their land Ze Etiyopia since ancient time immemorial and continued so even when Euroeans styled their land "Abyssinia".
Nubia, DMT, Axum, Punt have always been in the land called Cush/Ethiopia, and so obviously, was not just concentrated only in modern Sudan. Do something else with your time rather then making videos dribbling a ball like a toddler or being a hater drawn by a feeble mind.
@@amdetsion3256 shut the f up...its not surprising seeing an ethiopian amhara trying to steal others history....the whole world knows the name nubia and Aethiopia only belong to the Kingdom of kush based in Sudan which is where both greeecoroman names originate not aidstopia and the kitfo eating habashi
Jess you should educate yourself before you make sweaping comments. Ethiopian food is like alot of indian cultures. India is not a monollth. Fermented style of bread is very akin to Dosa in the south, Pati in west and a myriad of breads in other regions. Ethiopian dishes are bland in comparison to indian ones and the spice combinations are not as delectable. As far as eating from a platter with your hands in many parts of india this practice is reserved for family members only. As it would unhygienic to share a platter with people who you do not know on an intimate level and a means of spreading disease. in Central - South Asia we do not have a culture of stimulants. It is only recently that people have been gulping tea and coffee as pick me ups. As for the village coffee tasting like mud, and not being finely ground. Thats how its suppose to be. Fine particles otherwise are likely to burn and stick to the vessel they are being boiled in. Alot of Africa is heavily influenced by Asia, especially South Asia. YT people like you should restrain your hands.
