    Forget the critics picking holes in the minute details! This is a wonderful sight seeing this display of just what's good about the British army and the Rifles in particular!! Makes my skin tingle to see and hear this.

      you don't reach excellence without nitpicking. its the only way to improve and keep standards. My only issue though, is the preponderous domination of bugles. It may be the point of the performance but is it because they don't have enough fully trained musicians for other instruments. It sounds a bit like one of the teenagers jazz bands in the 70's with kazoos.

      @@redf7209 Are the Bugles not used to give commands in the Light Infantry, so they are extra to the band sort of.

      @@Paddington60 You're right, Its true that they are used for signalling but there does seem a surplus here that I've never noticed before.

      @@redf7209 Yes, quite heavy on the bugle front. With some other bands the recording seems to become overwhelmed with sound and the result sounds more than a little strange. One instance the camera person was stood about 18 inches infront of a pair of trumpets and the sound was sort of strangled in the louder portions which gave the effect of drastically unskilled players. The sound from other filmers of the same event was fine though.
      Do you have any idea if the metal used for an instrument affects the sound it produces? I'm thinking sometimes wind instruments look brass coloured or silver, so maybe they are brass or silver. Also I think I read somewhere James Galway(?) has a flute made of silver.
      I was drawn to it by the marching pace.

      @@Paddington60 I'm not aware of the metal affecting sound ( perhaps cleanliness) but the bugles sounded suspiciously like kazoos rather than bugles. The bugle is quite a difficult instrument to master and playing like they did was odd to me. My original comment was really a sort of weariness of the regular patriotic praise that our forces get which to me masks the long term run down of all the british forces capabilities. If we don't hold them to account for lower standards it makes it easier to continue the run down and we'll be saying they are the best in the world until there is nothing left. I really want to be proud of our forces but we need to be critical to keep them up to scratch.

    Around 1970 I attended a musical event at Wembley arranged on behalf of the Army Benevolent Fund. There were 1,600 British Army bandsmen performing and it was terrific, The second half was a playing of the 1812 with four groups, each of 400 bandsmen, representing the armies involved. The Light Division kicked off coming in playing the Sembre et Meurse, followed by Home Command playing the Russians with Cavalry of the Steppe, which the Light Division then took up. Then Highland Division, as the Austrians , entered playing the Radetsky March, and finally the Guards Bands entered, just to make up the noise and give them something to do, playing The British Grenadiers.
    When they had all finished playing that the Royal Horse Artillery galloped around the track and set up at one end and they all played the 1812. It was fabulous. I have never seen any film or seen or heard of any recordings that were made of this event. I would love to find there was something available. It was wonderful to be there and hear that wonderful sound.

    Is the band from Dad's Army? Mostly old and overweight. Not like the good old days. The buglers though are still tops.

    • @redf7209
      @redf7209 5 лет назад

      If you watch the trooping of the colour or navy parades there are plenty overweight soldiers in those too. The Army says it has a policy of performance evaluation that eliminates this but the officers often seem worse. I'm a pot calling the kettle black but my employment does not require high fitness levels nor is it in their power to make me work it off. There is something wrong with the army that allows this to happen. You also see their cuts making perfectly good soldiers redundant while they are keeping people patently unfit for their roles. Sometimes when you see the soldiers marching close too the uniforms are shoddy, too tight , worn at the edges and dirty etc too. I suppose some soldiers might be reserves and its harder to keep them if you are harsh keeping up standards ( i thinks that's always been a problem) but if so why are we replacing regulars with more and more reserves saying they are trained to the same levels and standards.

      You must be aware they've been reduced to one regiment then lots of the musicians are civis volunteers etc, as a side question why not get The Rifles band to perform with the Gurkha band?

    • @redf7209
      @redf7209 5 лет назад

      @@johnstevenson1709 If they cant operate without civilian volunteers they are just masking a problem and presenting a false image. It makes you wonder about the military capabilities, if in peacetime (relatively) they don't have resources to train a band. I imagine its because the army size is too small and deployment times are limiting free time for the training. If they stopped hiding the problems perhaps the public would be less accepting of cuts.

  • @deanemery1563

    The standards are shocking Im afraid. Bugles out of tune with each other, mis-pitching for fun. Lines awful. Im afraid no where near as impressive as 70s/80s/90s massed light division bands. Band over dominated by bugles . Sad. If this is the result of cuts then very worrying and embarrassing. The standards of army bandsman of the 70s/80s/90s far outshone this . Take a look back on some older videos.
