Hôtel Lambert: The Illustrious Collection

- The Hôtel Lambert, built in the early 1640s and located on the secluded Île Saint-Louis in the heart of Paris, is the most staggeringly beautiful private residence in the city.
This palatial private house was decorated by the artistic visionaries behind the Palace of Versailles, architect Louis Le Vau, and painters Charles Le Brun and Eustache Le Sueur. Since then, it has been home to various illustrious families from Polish Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski and his descendants, to the Baron de Rede’ who hosted his legendary Bal Oriental in 1969 and the Rothschilds.
A public exhibition will precede the auctions, open to visitors from 6-11 October. The auctions will be commemorated with six volumes. From 11-14 October, Sotheby’s Paris will offer the contents across five live auctions, and an online sale, accompanied by a series of catalogues comprising six volumes.
This is art, the likes of which we will never witness again. To have it dismantled and sold off piecemeal is a sacrilege.
Art Sacrilege is a privilege only the immensely heartless zillionaires can afford and evidently they enjoy it!
There are countless of great houses with extraordinary collections across the globe… you make it sound as if this is the last
@@kismit100 Fuck the globe.
Paris only has a few of those places still intact and in private hands, Xavier Niel didn't need to scatter the collection, but he did.
It was one rich men collection closed to the public, now some of these pieces are bought by french instututions and are available for all to enjoy, while some others are in another rich people hands. It is bigger pleasure to see some of these pieces live in Versailles or in Louvre then in video :) However ot ios wonderful video!
Stunning. There was not one thing that I did not like. The colors in each room, the transitions, the arrangements of each and every piece, balance, cheerful rooms.
And the music just took us along the journey of visual splendor.
It's French😂👍
Singularly and spectacularly beautiful. How I wish the place and the pieces would remain intact for hundreds of years.
Absolutely no words that could describe this journey I just went through viewing this video. I am speechless-- Stunning, gorgeous, beautiful, exquisit--doesnt give it justice. I am overwhelmed.
Je suis sans voix devant cette belle exposition. Je pense que je vais copier le lien histoire de la revoir à chaque fois que j'ai besoin de beauté pour supporter les aléas de la vie😍
The hotel is a jewel , so is the furniture, the lamps, those frescos on the ceilings, crystal chandeliers, porcelain, and antiques. The dining room is stunning. European decor is beautiful!
Basically it is a house, the French call it as a hotel

Yes, it's a "Hôtel particulier".
It is. That's why I miss Berlin. My. HOMETOWN....when it's gone. It's gone....no heaven for buildings....

Downton Abbey score. So nice. Ahhhh those French decorations. They know how to do it.
From an article in The Guardian, "In 2007, the Hôtel Lambert, whose Hercules Gallery was painted by Versailles decorator Charles Le Brun, was acquired by Qatari royal Sheikh Hamad Bin Abdullah Al Thani who carried out an extensive €120m (£100m) renovations and filled it with his extensive personal collection of art and decorative works. It is this collection now being offered for sale by Sotheby’s in October."
So, so, sad and sickening that it wasn’t purchased by France and saved as a museum. Really? No one cared enough about it? The Rothchild’s needed the money more than the write off?
Oui. And prior to that, this was the home of Marie Helene de Rothshield, site of many grand soirees.

And the Baron de Redé.
I still have the catalogs from the Baron de Redes sale. Why is this sheik selling it off. The Hotel Lambert should be a National museum. Testimony to France.
fail to mention the destruction of the bath cabinets, with 17th-century frescoes, completely burned by the fire that caused the extensive and unnecessary modifications (such as elevators for cars) modifications disapproved by the society of Heritage Protection for danger to the structure and that months later all Parisians watched helplessly as the worst omens happened. Oh yep, and dames to the glorious gallery as well...
That such collections still exist, in such a impeccable setting.
Since the 1830s until 1860s, when the residence belonged to the Czartoryski family, it was THE HEART OF POLAND. After the collapse of the November Uprising against Russia thousands of Poles were forced to leave their homeland. The Palace hosted the Czartoryski Collection including paintings of Leonardo da Vinci, Raffaello Santi e Rembrandt (now in Kraków) and some of the greatest Poles used to meet there including Fryderyk Chopin and Adam Mickiewicz. I am so sorry this historic Paris residence is no more in Polish hands :-(
highly sophisticated taste, should be kept as it is a historic art, why to sell, why not to keep as a museum...
It’s too bad this magnificent collection is being auctioned. I hope the many pieces are grouped and sold with great care to those who will truly value their significance.
Well said. Thank you.
It should be bought en bloc and preserved as a National museum of France. It has real life when occupied by Baron and Baronne Guy de Rothschild and their friend Baron Alexis de Rede. Lived in history and legendary parties.
@@johnmccann2320 I concur. Will French leadership be persuaded to make this lofty decision? France has such wealth in the arts and trades; yet, there are so many properties which need protection and preservation. The money is there, but can it be allocated in a timely fashion?
Agree 100% the building and the art along with the history should be part of France
The collection auctioned belongs to the family al Thani not the Rothchilds.
These are National treasures of France. I can’t imagine that it would all lost forever.

This place has a specjal spot in Polish harts .
It was a long time a home to Polish aristocracy
who emigrated running from Russian tyrany .
If l'm not mistaken it was owned for many years
by Polish arystocrat .
You are right. "With the motto ‘From the Past to the Future’, Princess Izabela set up the museum in Pulawy, Poland to store Polish and other historic memorabilia. Da Vinci’s ‘The Lady with an Ermine’ was added to the collection by Izabela’s son, Adam, upon his return from Italy. After his political career failed, Adam moved to Paris along with the collection which was set up at Hotel Lambert. "
@@liliaindjieva6713 thanks for the info . Nice to know that some one

I don't know how many possessions of Prince Czartoryski family is still there; hope not many. At least the library and the museum came to Krakow. Czartoryskis couldn't afford to keep the Hotel at the beginning of XX c. Count Zamoyski obtained it, then finally arabian prince or sheikh. Chopin played so many times there, the core of the Great Polish Emigration met there , so sad, really...🇵🇱🌹
It's extremely disappointing that this wasn't turned into a museum like the Musee Nissim de Camondo
I read somewhere that Niel is going to turn it into a cultural institute. A museum, I can imagine, but a cultural institute ? Seems pretty perilous to me
Who or what is Niel if I may ask?
@@nadia-i1l5h French telecom billionaire Xavier Niel who bought the place a few years back for 200M€, from arabs (who burned it down for insurance money because they wanted to dig a swimming pool and a batman parking elevator) .
Niel is that kind of progressive/jewish tech billionaire, so whatever "culture" means to him, probably won't mean "french" culture to normal people. More likely contemporary speculative garbage to recoup his investment, otherwise he wouldn't be scattering that amazing collection.

Amazing collection ... I am predicting a real war around some pieces This style of sale is so rare both in quality and quantity ....
built in 1640... When Paris dreamed to be a second Rome... Many french queens were italians... We must not forget it !
French Kingdom was fascinated by Italy then... (and still is cultural sense of the verb "fascinated of course).
French culture is probably one of the classic culture in the world.
none of this building was from 1640!! weird how you need to drag italy to it! also even if all the Queen was italian, it won't affect the culture nor architecture

Great
Some families were just extremely rich. Luckily they spent a lot of their money to beauty, so that it is preserved and we too can enjoy it occasionally.
Perfection !

STAGGERING is the right word. But why is it all being auctioned off now ? I think the actual house is gorgeous, but the sheer quantity of the possessions this house contains is mind blowing - I am so glad I am not a maid working there - can you imagine dusting all that stuff ? Really beautiful things each one of which could be appreciated so much more were it to be displayed by itself instead of being swamped by so much other stuff. Really if this is one family's home it is a ridiculous example of a human having more money than they know what to do with - and I am so glad that's how it appears to me ! I would love to be at the auctions to see all this stuff slowly moving away with new owners. Some of that furniture is beautiful so that would be a shame to sell away from the house. Then if they are selling everything off what is to become of the house itself ? please create a video of it's future if you can !!!
Utmost perfection undoubtedly.
No imbalance, mismatch, mistakes.

Tragic that the contents are being auctioned. What happened? Is there no private owner? Can't the hotel be turned into a museum?

How to make this procedure of Sotheby's much sobar like helping skill to refit extraordinary objects into same room under different angle of ray?
A dream- ☄️ it must be recognized that it has no equivalent - a perfected human body of architectural heritage and singular objects of arte. We are the extinction level events.
Sad this magnificent collection has being auctioned. Does anybody know the reason?
It must be remembered that early on in the restoration by the Qatari Sheik, there was a disasterous fire while repairs to the roof were being done- the damage mostly from the water to extinguish the fire caused major damage, even to the Gallerie D'Hercule. At least the building appears to have been restored. There was some talk of the Rothchild's giving the Hotel Lambert to the French Government when they put it up for sale, but nothing came of it then. Hopefully the building and interiors will be carefully tended for the future, despite the losses.
Yes, the last level under the roof, decorated by Viollet le Duc and Lassus... in neogothic style for the Czartoryski family was entirely destroyed by the fire as well as an original decorated 17th room, the Diana room. The levels below were not much damaged by water thanks to the concrete floor built few months... before over them. The stained glass gallery was perhaps partially preserved and deposed since we can see one of them in the video at 10:40. Just before at 10:30, you can see the moorish clock of the hôtel de la Marine, now a museum, that the State tried unsuccessfully to buy against the Sheik, but finally did I suppose at the Sotheby's sale, since I saw it later in the museum. The Sheik did finally obtain the building permit after a lawsuit (I even participated in it !) on the condition to not put a lift... and bathroom inside the 17th grand bedroom and to not dig a garage under the courtyard as he wanted to ! But he remodelled and destroyed largely the original 17-18th rooms walls and settings in the West wing, on the left of the courtyard, on 2 levels to create new modern... rooms for his family in exchange of the restoration of the grand appartement in the East wing with the Hercule gallery ! Some even pretend that the fire was not... accidental in order to let him modernise as well the neogothic level, what he couldn't have done otherwise ! (Strangely another fire in a protected historical mansion of the place des Vosges owned by another Sheik... occurred as well few months later !). So a large part of the original hôtel Lambert, except the most precious rooms, was consequently lost under his ownership ! But his collection was absolutely stunning and exceptional and it's indeed a pity that it did'nt become a museum.
May I know the name of this artefact which hang on the wall? 12:31
