Ergotism has been known in central Europe for hundreds of years ... so the possibility of that town suffering from it is actually pretty functional. In good years, rye infected with eagot would be thrown out or burned. In bad years, one took ones chances. There are several famous cases in France from the middle ages onward so I wouldn't dismiss it automatically.
It is interesting, although it sounds a lot like mass dosing of a hallucinogenic substance placed in an everyday item (via something like water, bread, etc).

If you were a hyper intelligent alien who can travel faster than the speed of light want to stop at the planet that can't get along with our next door neighbor let alone other countries. Heck no, if they are smart they will just pass us on by.
Technically most people don’t like their parents and a majority claim to hate their grandparents (in the West anyway), so it’s even worse than that.
However, as that did not stop our human ancestors from exploring, and as it did not completely halt our own (more modest) explorations into space entirely; I don’t believe that is entirely a deterant.
After all, many claim that we have already been visited by aliens quite a bit!

The universe(s) are extremely vast. In this small sector of the one earth is part of. This planet is the bottom or prison planet, not that there are not others (many) almost as bad. Why would others wish to come here, this needs to be taken into account. Perhaps there is a middle earth more advanced than surface, which we see traveling. Other possibilities include mining. Checking on prisoners to check progress good and bad. They may care and wish well anf intended aide. The possibilities are vast, but assuming earthlings are top tiers is a mistake.
