Pentax 6x7 MLU is my main camera, and the 105mm f/2.4, that camera and lens combo is the reason I sold my Mamiya RB67 ProS set up! It is very Large Format-ish with the look of the image from that 105mm.
Pulled the trigger on a 67 last month. So far, I’ve only got the 105 f2.8 lens and man, it lives up to the hype. I’ve shot one roll of FP4 and one roll of Portra 160 and really dig the results.
Solid camera and the lenses are great but I went with the RB67 because of the interchangeable backs. Almost 50 years later, 33 of them in a studio, and it is still going strong!
My Pentax was my first medium format camera. Though with the 90 lens! I’ve jumped around a bit, and am coming back to the 67 with a 105. Waiting for it from ebay now and this video got me so excited!
Here's the deal: the 200mm is ideal for head shots. The 120mm soft lens is perfect for dreamy head shots. The 75mm f2.8 is the ideal and very pricey group portrait shot lens, the 75mm f4 is the cost effective alternative lens to use. The 55mm lens is good for environmental portrait shooting because having a 28mm angle of view produces minimal wide angle distortion. The 105 f2.4 is a far cheaper alternative portrait lens vs the 75mm f2.8 lens. For RAZOR sharp portrait work, the 135mm Macro lens cannot be beat for medium format close-up work. The extension tubes will increase the 135's magnification. With the exception of the 75mm f2.8 lens, all these lenses are very cheap to purchase compared to other 6x7 medium format systems because they are shutterless. All are SMC, which gives them fantastic contrast when properly hooded from stray light. The favorite lens to use with B&W film.
I really love the 55mm lens. Very sharp. I prefer the 90mm 2.8. It is both soft and sharp. The 105mm is legend, but so tight. It's a portrait lens, and if you are a portrait photographer, great. But if you are an everyday shooter the 90mm offers more composition flexibility while also doubling as a great portrait lens.
I like both of those lenses too especially if they are the late model 67 SMC versions. You can get both of these lenses and still spend less than what the late model 105mm sells for.
I had a Pentax 67 and a Pentax 6x7, both with metered prisms. 55mm F4 and a 75mm f4. 5 The 55mm F4 is awesome. I needed the money so it's sold. I have a Kiev 6c 6x6 slr with a 90mm 2.8 Vega lens bought for £70. I love the square format and the waist level finder. Selling a lot of my cameras and looking for a Hasselblad now.
Would love to see you shoot with an RB67 , I was torn on what to get but after having the RB67 for about 8 months it’s a dream especially paired with my 55mm and my 90mm can’t go wrong , next is to try the Pentax with the dream lens I hear nothing but great things about it!
I have the 105mm and 55mm f3.5! I also love the 35mm focal length so I was gonna try 75mm but it was a little bit too tight as you said. So ended up getting 55mm instead and I'm very satisfied with it :)
Nice video. I think it's interesting that you think of wide angle lenses as portrait lenses. I think the 90mm is plenty wide myself. For a head shot I would use the 200mm lens. That lens corresponds better to my 85mm and 120mm lenses for my 35mm film cameras. I would like to pick up a 165mm lens to go with the leaf shutter on the 90mm lens. I agree that the 55mm and 90mm make great lenses for the outdoors.
Since asked, yes, I have and use most of the lenses available from 35mm through 200mm. If you are shooting portraits, full figure poses stands you far enough away so you can get by with a 105mm or even a 75mm. For anything close to head-and-shoulders, anything shorter than the 135 is going to give figure distortion, probably of the long-nose variety if the subjects are looking toward you. (He-Ha) Talking about depth of field and subject isolation in close-ups with anything from 105mm on up is a pointless comparison, since they all have such small depth of field that any will give an isolation effect. By way of disclosure, I own a total of 14 lenses for the 67 system, but I've never owned a 105mm because it serves no function I cannot do better with other lenses of similar focal length. Had I one right now, I'd sell it in a flash, as a lens I could buy all day for $150 or less can go off for more than $700, at least until those bedassled by the hype wake up. That Cinderella will loose her slipper, and the 105mm will crash back to $150.
I also own a butt load of Pentax 6x7 glass too. The 105mm lens was actually considered the kit lens for the 6x7 body. I bought my camera body new for $400 back in the 1980's. Cheaper than a Hasselblad A12 back! Many pro photographers got wise to this Amazing camera Deal and bought extra bodies as camera backs on photo shoots. Just swap out a pre-loaded body with the lens you were using. Less wear and tear on a camera body because many were being used instead of a single body on back interchangeable medium format systems. The NPC Polaroid back was mounted on a camera body for exposure checking. The SMC lenses created Super High Contrast B&W film prints, so the 6x7 became the Fashion Photographers and Mountain Photographer's kit to use. And the SLR ergonomics are a breeze to use.
I recently acquired the Pentax 67ii with the 105mm and I love it. I’m in the process of designing a new Polaroid back for it as it’s the perfect size for instax mini film.
Shame about not having photos. That hour was golden AF! I know how it is though. I've got 10 undeveloped rolls sitting in my camera bag right now :) Beast of a camera as well man.
Cool video! Buuuuuut... you can't talk about >ultimate< Pentax 6x7 portrait kits without mentioning Kodak Aero Ektar 178/2.5, or some golden Schneider Cinelux lenses. For your particular style there aren't many wide angle lenses that you could try out, but the "dream lens" 105/2.4 could be replaced with a Schneider 105/2.0 for even shallower depth of field and a more funky look.
Mlu with 105 f2.4 75mm f4 and 150mm Will adapt them to sony alfa Waiting for the adapters as we speak When did you swapped the prism ? I remember you having the no meter prism.. Mlu is the seccond version of 6x7 The first was non mlu
55mm f/4 is one of the best for portraits indoors for boudoir ect . 105mm 2.4 the legend , and 165mm f/2.8. There 3 Versions of 105mm f/2.4 , and the best is SMC 105mm f/2.4 (sharper and 3D pop ) and it can be rated as f/2.0 because how bright it is.
Dope video as always! Totally with you on the 55mm vs 35mm for full frame. I have the exact same setup as you, Leica M2 and 35mm v2, but I also prefer the 55mm on my Pentax 6X7 even if it's a slightly wider angle. Come to think of it, I have the exact same setup as you with medium format as well, Pentax 6x7 MLU, 55mm and 105mm most of the time. You have truly excellent taste, my good man!😆
Have the 6x7 MLU with the 105mm as well. Noticed the yellowing on your lens, definitely recommend putting it in UV light to clear the radiation a bit. Keep up the great videos brotha.
I had the 67 which I recently sold. I found it hard to focus with and I have pretty good vision. RZ67II is my goto portrait set up. The focusing screen is incredibly bright and I can always nail focus. But I do miss the 105mm nothing beats it. I do plan to get the 67II at some point if I miss that lens too much..
I have a 67. Got it like a dozen years ago...sat in the closet for 10. I finally pulled it out and got it tuned up. I have the 55, 90, 135, 165, and 200. But generally when I go shooting I bring the 55 and 90.
Every time I shoot 35mm it is noticeable how much it lacks detail compared to medium format. I got a Fujica GW690 the other month and the 6x9 negative is crazy nice. If you are looking for an incredibly cheap (and basic) medium format camera try an older TLR like a Kodak Duaflex III. Surprisingly fun camera to shoot with. Really nice pictures in good lighting.
What does a man do after paying for a "lifestyle shoot"? Make prints and hang pictures of yourself around your own crib? Is this where Tinder and Gridr profile pics come from?

Give the 150mm f2.8 a try! The bokeh is so much smoother than the 105mm f/2.4.
Solid camera and the lenses are great but I went with the RB67 because of the interchangeable backs. Almost 50 years later, 33 of them in a studio, and it is still going strong!

Try the 120 mm 3,5 soft focus - it is a dream lens…it gives a total different look and is a very special lens for our beloved Pentax 67 system !
Pentax 67 paired with a 105/2.4 is my dream set up for portraits. Dope video Mr Jvpes.
I do mostly studio flash work so its all about that 90mm leaf shutter for me!
Awesome video, can you supply a link to the grip you bought?
I’m leaning more towards an RZ but I can’t afford either camera for a while anyway hahaha.
lmaooo me rn
I just bought a MINT Pentax 67 ii. Can't wait to figure it out!

i came from your old sleepwalk acoustic guitar cover
I go back and watch that video whenever I'm sad ;)
Same!
JAHAHAHHAHA SAME
Same lol

i've just got my pentax 6x7 yesterday! so stoked to shoot some pics🙏🏼🔥
Where did you find 1? Looking to get 1
I just joined the Pentax 67 fam with the 90 and 55mm.. I still have my Mamiya RZ67 and I have a 50,65,110,210,250 there 😅😅😅
Shame about not having photos. That hour was golden AF!
I know how it is though. I've got 10 undeveloped rolls sitting in my camera bag right now :)
Beast of a camera as well man.
Fam, we have the exact same kit lol. I couldn’t agree more, both these lenses are IMO the best for the Pentax 67!
Got the exact same kit. Still dreaming of that 75 2.8💭
Dude out there looking like Nike threw up on him.
It's such a huuuuge camera! Definitely not for me, but good for you that you found a camera you like so much.
The pentax 67 is so clean! I will hopefully pick one up soon!
Mamiya RB67 : Godzilla
Pentax 67 : King Kong
They’re both bad azz
I have the 75mm too. Initially I thought I wouldn't use it as it's a focal range I don't tend to use but i tried it and it's sweet. Sharp as f!
Just bought a 67 where did you get the right handed grip?

Will adapt them to sony alfa
Waiting for the adapters as we speak
When did you swapped the prism ? I remember you having the no meter prism..
Mlu is the seccond version of 6x7
The first was non mlu
dude - try the 135mm f4 for portraits
Hey man! love your vids!
75mm on medium format is the equivalent of 50mm on full frame! so your 55mm is the routh equivalent of 35mm! 😊
Depends what aspect ration though. For example with 645 80mm= 50mm and 55mm= 35mm. With 6x7 105mm= 53mm 90mm= 45mm and 50mm= 28mm
@@FramesPerSecond oh yeah, forgot about the different aspect ratios of medium format!
Definitely the ultimate portrait photography camera! 🙂👍🏽
I have the the 75mm f4.5, it’s a great lens but probably too sharp for portraits. I like your selection, there’s a lot you can do with those 2 lenses.
my dream kit was the rz67 with the 150 and the 110 2.8. I should not have sold it. They doubled in price lol
Just have the 105 atm but I’m planning to pick up a 55 or 45

What’s a good price on a 55mm late model lens?
Have the 6x7 MLU with the 105mm as well. Noticed the yellowing on your lens, definitely recommend putting it in UV light to clear the radiation a bit. Keep up the great videos brotha.
beat me to it!

Have you tried shooting any barrel lenses with it? Like the Aero Ektar?
Do you have a link to the 3rd party right hand grip?
do i want/need the pentax 67 with the 105/2.4 or the rz67 with the 110/2.8?!? somebody helpppppppp
I have a 67. Got it like a dozen years ago...sat in the closet for 10. I finally pulled it out and got it tuned up. I have the 55, 90, 135, 165, and 200. But generally when I go shooting I bring the 55 and 90.
Small detail the mlu version is the second version
Pentax 6x7 --> Pentax 67 MLU --> Pentax 67 ii
Nope. 1: Pentax 6x7 non-MLU ->Pentax 6x7 MLU then Pentax 67 MLU -> Pentax 67ii
Do you use any special viewfinder ? or how you nail the focus, thanks for the video!
Some of my lenses have half dark spots, even if I do a 360 turn, what can I do about this
Out of curiosity/these samples looking different then other samples I’ve seen, are you editing these?
I love you bro. So chill
very insightful. keep up the great content
Absolutely love your content.
What about a wrist strap?
90 LS, older 55, 200 and a 35 Fisheye.
If its a MLU, it's the second Version, not the first. Mark one got no MLU. Got both of them here.
i want one of these so badly, i burning out on 35mm i want to move up.
Every time I shoot 35mm it is noticeable how much it lacks detail compared to medium format. I got a Fujica GW690 the other month and the 6x9 negative is crazy nice.

Cannot figure out what this movie actually is about...
105mm, 55mm, 135mm macro!
