The automotive aluminum being recycled uses alloys that contain high percentages of lead, which allows for easier machining. These alloys are NOT food safe, and recently these cookers have been blamed for heavy metal poisoning in Afghan children. They have been pulled from shelves in the US after metallurgical testing showed they contain thousands of times higher lead levels than is safe for cookware.
