- Interviews with World War II D-Day veterans who served and fought on that fateful day in June 1944.
Thank you to all the volunteers and contributors that helped make Overlord 2014 a success!
Tuesday, June 6th, 1944: D-Day. At 0630 hours 12,000 aircraft, 7,000 naval vessels, 160,000 brave Allied troops and 195,000 brave Allied sailors began the largest amphibious invasion in history. This invasion marked the beginning of the Normandy campaign and was code-named Operation Overlord.
Friday, June 6th, 2014 marked the 70th anniversary of this historic event and once again many our brave World War II veterans were on the move; this time to Bedford, Virginia, site of the National D-Day Memorial. To celebrate and honor the men and women who planned, worked, fought and died for our freedom in the Normandy invasion campaign, the Rotary Clubs of North Carolina and Virginia led the project to organize and sponsor the travel of every surviving veteran in those states to the memorial for the celebration.

Two houses down lived a WWII Army veteran. Across the street, lived a WWII Wehrmacht veteran. They were friends and fishing buddies for over a decade before they passed away. Both were amazing men.
There’s a WWII vet who lives next door to my parents, with his wife. I became friends with them before I moved out. Poor guy is suffering from cancer and is now bedridden. He’s fought it for years, and now I’m praying God just takes him quickly. It makes me so sad to think about him bed bound and hurting.
Wow I bet they both had some stories to tell, wonder if they were ever on the battlefield against one another? Like them two guys.
74 years ago today..my grandfather was third wave Omaha Beach. It's June 6th...2018. His name was Edward Buckelew..US army. NJ. How sad we as a society forget that day. It's importance. And the blood that was sacrificed. I miss you very much Eddy. Love you even more after you are long gone. Your grandson James. God how I miss you.

Denise Long: Thank you for your words.. My great-uncle who served as a pilot in the war told me once that many people saw him like a hero but that he never considered himself a hero . He did what he was supposed to do..He also told me that he used to pray every time he flew a mission and carried a rabbit foot for good luck with him..He said that he felt very afraid before a mission but that once he was in the plane he concentrated on the mission and his concentration did not give him time to think, neither the less to be afraid until he returned safely . Twice he crashed once he was saved by Tito's army in Yugoslavia and from there he returned to Great Britain and after a rest continued bombing targets. The 2nd crash was a crash landing in Sicily but for some reason he landed closed to where Patton's army was waiting..He returned back to headquarters and continued his missions.
My grandfather on my mother's side was a WWII vet. He died shortly before I was born. I can't wait to go to heaven one day and meet him. Hear his stories. Hug him and say thank you.

For Christ sakes! Well don't just talk like a big talker........you see these guys all the time in front of grocery stores selling poppies on Veterans Day as you blow by them on your way to drink beer and get loaded.
Stop by and talk to them. Here's an idea........read a personal testimonial about a veteran in a war and then you can actually have a conversation with them. Trust me, they will thank you. Not for your $1.00 f*ucking bill, or your "35 likes" on youtube, but for actually taking the time to care about what they went through.

My grandfather and great uncle were both in WW2 and even though I did not meet my grandpa for he died on D-Day I did meet my great uncle. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your words, I know that my grandma and my father would have been very proud today with your kind words.

my grandpa was in ww2 I miss him he survived ww2 D-day he lost his best friend that day so sad he would always talk about story's he had a lot of Best friends
I'm not american but I feel the need of thanks for his service and give a hug to each one of these heroes. God had takes care of they in life, so He will in heaven.

well send my best regards to them one day i saw one in jack in the box and froz i couldnt talk to them but yea he had a hat that it said ww2 vietnam korea etc.. and he was like 90 and with his wife
just got to listen to one speak yesterday and had a conversation with him...great opportunity that wont be available for long
Donald Marlarkey is still alive . He served in the 101st airborne division , 506th infantry regiment .. Still alive TODAY 95 years old ....
Thanks for these invaluable interview/stories, it won't be too long before humanity loses all remaining WW2 veterans from all sides of the conflict.
If you happen to see this comment and know someone who was involved in the war please consider asking them if they would like to share any stories or be interviewed, on camera, voice, paper, anything, or perhaps suggest the idea of them writing a memoir however short or insignificant they might think their involvement was, all accounts are precious. If they decline that is ok, be respectful of their wishes and don't try to pry.
How in the world was that guy at the 23:00 mark 97 years old? Incredible. He looked not a day older than 75 and sharp as a tack!

I was fortunate enough to have known some of these men growing up.
I learned things from them I practice every day.
They're all gone now.
I miss them all dearly.

Amazing ability to remember these gentlemen have, the third or fourth interview, the 97 year old artillery crew member didnt look a day over 70, amazing!

This presentation was not only informative, it was very moving. I agree 100% that we, as a nation, need to stand up, remember and celebrate these All-American Hero’s. My Dad fought World War II Korea. My love, pride and admiration for him is immeasurable. One of the highlights of his later years was being able to visit the Memorial via an Honor Flight. That visit, that flight brought him the closure that he needed for decades.
Thank you all, each and everyone of you that served. Thank you for our freedom, thank you for being the greatest generation of all time!

All young Americans should be given the chance to meet a veteran and hear their stories first hand. It's inspirational, and looking a person in the eye, who has actually experienced a war is awesome. I thank every man or woman who I can tell is fighting, or has fought, for my country.
All young Americans should be required to serve at least two years in the military.

This is great...everyone should see/hear it.
One of the last great things my grandfather got to do before he passed away was an honor flight to DC. As a combat veteran I had the honor of saluting and greeting these heroes as they got off the plane. Shaking their hands and THEM telling ME thank you for your service was truly an honor I did not feel worthy of. Just thinking about it makes me choke up.

Some might think the first guy, the navy guy had it easy as he didn't actually assault the beach, but imagine the 60 trips over and back... the fear of getting sunk and killed by U-Boats
Whether in the air, on the seas or with boots on the ground, their sacrifice was just and costly.
My grampa fought in Vietnam and I watched a movie with him and he was crying he said because it was kinda like that

My father went to Germany during Vietnam. He was drafted and they stood in a line.. you Vietnam, you Germany, you Vietnam, you Germany. He said he was shaking and then stood on the Germany side of the room and looked at the fear and tears of the Vietnam side. He said he tried to study their faces as best he could. He tried to study their faces because he knew more then half would never come home.

When I visited Hawaii in 91 or 92, there were ww2 vets there when we were looking at the still oil-slicked water surface above where the ships sank.

these first hand accounts are amazing to hear...years ago, it would have been a lot more difficult to hear this stuff....unless you had someone in your family tree. i also like a lot of their spirit ..and they are smiling to this day. im not a "war" guy at all... but respect these guys now that ive heard their stories. ☮

Was watching this in Asheville, NC, the vet from Avl NC @ 1:44:00 , walked outside and a B-17 flew right over my shop.
Truely America's Greatest Generation I wish public schools were made to show these interviews of these patriots who were just kids when they fought the bloodiest wars in history against tyranny and true evil.
My ancester were also German and my Grand father also fought the Germans...He was a tank commander.
We are Weed but we have Rhinehart & Frank in our veins. My Dad was in C-47,his older Brother was in a Half track under Gen. Patton's Command, & another fought the Japanese he was wounded,fought from Australia to the Philippines came home at 89 lbs.
They made it home but never the same.

I get teary-eyed when I hear these mean tell their stories, thinking about everything they did and went through, happily, bravely, knowing the danger, but it gets me especially choked-up when I look at today's generation in comparison. The America that once was is dead. Not enough people appreciate the absolute miracle and blessing that was created and handed down to us with this once great nation. Nowadays we have a generation of spoiled, entitled brats who don't appreciate anything, and don't know _anything_ but think they know _everything._ I hate to say it but it's true. There's still some good ones but they're getting much more rare.

Truly these are superheroes who accomplished this insurmountable task. They saved the free world and gave us this country we have today. There has never been a generation of men who gave so much and changed the course of history like they did. Never ever forget them. One of these old heroes, said that there are 300,000 old WW2 vet's left, out of 7 million. Al my father in law, is one, he was Navy 16 yr. old (lied about his age) in 1945, heading for Japan. Women and children, in Japan, were being taught to fight till dead, with bamboo spears. They dropped the Atom bomb, Al's war was over, on the way to Japan.

Those flag shakers have been volunteering for combat the last 20 years. And kicking ass the whole time. Political policies may fail but our Military has not. They’ve won damn near every engagement out of hundred of thousands of missions.

If my thinking is right. You have to be 90+ to have served in WW2 and be alive today. Speak to your Veterans folks, they will all be gone soon.
It's amazing to me that none of the troop transports got sunk on their way to England.

It actually formed the way I would live the rest of my life....It gave me the courage to face adversity, and to face things that I don't know if I could if I could have faced again or not."

These heroes are NOT like us. They were different people from a different time and a different world. A different generation. They're called THE GREATEST GENERATION for a REASON. And THIS is why. My grandparents were part of this and they were the greatest people I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. PERIOD!
But to hear this hero admit that he did things then that he didn't know if he could do again....that says something...think of the balls...the actual...inner fortitude it takes to face such insurmountable odds and just keep on pushing through. And he's telling us ...bold faced....honest as the day is long....he has NO REASON to lie...he's saying he doesn't know if he could do it again. DAMN!! Words fail to express the gravity of that situation.
I'm confused. The interview at 36:42 says the man trained on Higgins boats (LVP), but then he is wearing a polo which shows embroidery LST (Landing Ship Tank).......even the length of the ship isn't a Higgins boat.. He then states that he see's men running off the ramp and being mowed down by MG42. That would then mean he was on a LVP. He was there, but I'm confused. He's also a little confused if teaching the bible is going to SAVE HUMANITY
He could have been deployed to that ship, but trained on Higgins.
