'Mad Men' Vincent Kartheiser on Pete Campbell

- Mad Men star Vincent Kartheiser stopped by the Rolling Stone studio recently to chat about the evolution of his character, the high-strung ad man Pete Campbell. "He found his place in the world," says Kartheiser. "He knows where he fits, he knows where he has value at the agency, and it's something you need to figure out as a human being, because you will be in constant conflict if you don't. In seasons one and two, he thought he should be where Don [Draper] was, and in seasons three and four, he kind of figured it out." Kartheiser also explains that he has no interest in directing an episode of the series, as his co-stars Jon Hamm and John Slattery have done: "I'm just an actor. I'm very much kind of a one-trick pony and hardly even understand my own character, much less the entire theme of the show."

"NOT GREAT, BOB" somehow might be one of the best lines in a character drama ever.
Sat down and watched seasons 1-7 in one week. 'Pete Campbell' is of the best evolutions of a character I have seen on TV. I now smile every time he enters the room.
I know I did the exact same thing this month an I feel the exact same way lol.. First two seasons I kept hoping they would kill him off but now I'm so happy that they kept him on right through hes been amazing to watch an find myself now rooting for .. Wish it wasn't over yet
timeweston He was a prick for a bit; but I ended up loving him.
+iamanubus2 I always thought he would eventually lose his mind and shoot up the the building with the gun he had in his office.
+timeweston ALL 7 SEASONS IN ONE WEEK? IS THAT POSSIBLE? I GUESS MY BRAIN JUST COULDN'T WORK AS WELL AS YOURS
how the hell does one watch 7 seasons of a single show in just one week ? unemployed or out of school are we ?
My favorite line spoken on any show was from him "tell my mother she could go to hell, ted chaough can fly her there" the best
saw this a few days ago, so good! lol
praise (His Holy Name?) kiyogera... who could forget this shining moment from Mr. Campbell?: ruclips.net/video/lU8t6Z6dpns/видео.html
I’ve never cried so much hahha
Yes, the pompous, Waspy indignation is wonderful to watch
pete cambell was literally designed to be misunderstood
Like, literally?
Literally
He was all about the Chip n Dip.
@@scottsodyssey2485 he only wanted that rifle in case he ever had to blow don or rogers head off
@@scottsodyssey2485 it’s practically four of something
His humility is very refreshing
Very talented actor. He was superb as Pete.
A thing like that
Gay
How lovely is this guy? And Pete is my favorite character, complex and highly entertaining. Alexis is a smart girl.
I love Pete's facial expressions of disgust, confusion and surprise in the show 😂😂
This guy's acting ability is so awesome that I believe his character's unlikeable persona cost him an Emmy. People probably thought he had similar characteristics which he does not. Bravo Mr. Kartheiser! Great things will continue to come to you. Loved his heartwrenching performance in "The Most Hated Woman In America."
This guy made me dislike him than like him than dislike him than like him again. A phenomenal actor who knows his craft, he's going to be around for a long time.
Finally......someone who feels the way I feel. HATE Pete Campbell!
@@Bellagirl-ev7jj ur such a loser lol
Yes!
Then, not than.
He's a very, very good actor. One of the best around these days as far as younger actors. Though he's not a kid anymore.
At the end of the series, Pete Campbell became my favourite character of the show. Vincent Kartheiser is very talented
He's a great actor. Nice looking as well. You couldn't help but to like him. Even on his worse days. I predict he has a great future in acting.
I love reading everyone's posts. I HATED this character and this man is a great actor because I hated him through every show!
"Well I'm the President of the Howdy-Doody Circus!" Haha, Pete, easily the best character on the show.
Howdy-doody Circus Army
What’s with Pete and howdy doody. He also gave us the gem 💎 ‘does howdy doody have a wooden dick.’
i like when i see character and actor actually different. not so common in tv series. he's acting for real, he's good ;)
My favourite example of this is Joffrey. Watch any Jack Gleeson interview (Warning: Watching a Jack Gleeson Interview May Cause Risk of Liking Joffrey).
James Gardner
exactly my thought. he's another great example of that
Have you seen Another Day in Paradise? He was phenomenal, he stole the movie from James Woods & Melanie Griffith, which is no small feat Woods is always great & was like 3x his age. If you haven't seen it, you should, it's a great movie & he really shines. Truly amazing actor.
@@gymnast2890 I watch that movie often because of how amazing he was in it. He wasn't even 20 years at the time and he was brilliant. I believed him in every scene with him in it. Which I think was the whole movie.
He did an absolutely brilliant job as Pete Campbell. One of my favourite characters on the show!
one of the top performances in the show, every time i watch the series i'm in awe of his ability to nail the drama AND comedy of pete brilliantly
Truly we should see Vincent in more things. What a delightful person and actor.
Love this guy. He was on fire in Another Day In Paradise- truly a gifted natural actor.
I have to admit, I always wondered if the man behind Pete was a shit-eater in real life. Turns out he's a sweet heart and I'M the asshole.
Mmm he actually is kind of an asshole, just not in this interview...
Proof?
I saw him in an interview (granted, you can't judge a guy from one interview, but it's my slice of Vincent) where he was complaining about the Internet and bloggers, and talking about how the problem with today's society is too many opinions when we should be leaving it to the experts.
While I partially agree, and find the oversensationalization of everything in Internet culture to be annoying, I don't think the problem is the bloggers themselves, but rather how they market themselves. The idea that expressing your views is only for the experts is pretty elitist.
He still seems like a humble guy, though, and that was one part of a 15 minute interview, but it stuck out to me.
He's right though. Too much SJW scum out there.
Pete Campbell was a complex, intriguing character- one of the best. Vincent's acting was superb, his portrayal of Pete was so moving.
Pete Campbell is amazing. So tenacious. Vincent is an incredibly talented actor and I would love to see him in more.
This guy makes me melt
lucky him
Me too!
Despite his looks, I always assumed women who watched the show wouldn't be attracted to him solely because of his slimey character.
Binged the show again during lockdown
I never saw Mad Men when it aired, but I have been watching it on Netflix and I love it!! But.....this guy must be the BEST actor on earth because I HATE HIM SO MUCH!!! He is nauseating!!
Hahaha same! He’s so insufferable on the show 😂
Pete Campbell is the same age as my grandfather who died in 2011. However, in 2012 he'd 78, so he could very well still be alive.
My grandfather is older than that and his cousin is 92 and still walking. Although many people die young, it is funny how many people assume anyone over 70 is good as dead. Not really in many cases.
It's weird for me, watching Mad Men and thinking that if my dad were any of the characters on the show, he'd have to be Bobby or Glen (except even younger than them by a few years).
One of the most subtle of the brilliant performances on Mad Men. Pete had big man ideas in a slight body. He cleverly competed with those taller and better looking, though few were smarter.
Dayuum, Vincent Kartheiser is hot in real life! One of the best character evolutions on a TV show ever.
I loved how they toed the line with Pete: it would've been easy to make him a total asshole villain, but he was actually the voice of reason half the time (even if that "reason" was a bit cold). Mad Men was one of those shows that actually felt like real life, because there were no real heroes or villains, just people whose values and motives tended to clash every once in awhile.
he's always been pretty.. i rented Alaska so many times when i was little that i can't believe my folks didn't just buy it for me. then i turned 17 and i could rent Another Day in Paradise and THEN i almost died
@@itinkuno I haven't seen either of those, but I think I'll check them out.
@@geneparmesan8748 Yeah they really did do character subtlety brilliantly on Mad Men
@@geneparmesan8748 every once in awhile? That's got to be sarcasm.
I admire how modest he is.
Vincent Kartheiser is a amazing actor. I wish we could see him more often.
It's funny, this interview made me appreciate Kartheiser more as an actor. The way he speaks, his tone, his attitude, he's nothing like Pete Campbell. Also, not for nothing, but the man is one of those guys who looks better with a beard, am I right?
He should have won more awards for Pete Campbell.
“Probably ate a bullet...” LOL!
I love the fact that Vincent doesn't own a car in LA, lives in a studio apartment and takes public transit to work on the set of Mad Men
I love Pete, character is great on Mad Men
I liked the way they aged Pete with his receding hair line.. Great acting by the entire cast and one of the best shows ever.
Man, I have nothing but good things to say about Vincent Kartheiser. Next to Jon Hamm, he's the best damn actor on Mad Men. I can't imagine anyone else playing the slimy Pete Campbell.
I'll be very sad when this show enters its final season. =(
It takes a great actor to be THAT unlikable.
Lego King for sure he becomes one of my favorite characters in the show. Which is a testament to the Vincent's acting and the show's writing because I despised him in seasons one and two.
What? Did you even watch past season 1? Pete is one of the most likeable characters by the end. One of the most decent ones out of all of them..
I consider him the villain of the show.
A true house spider of a human being.
@@JustSomeCanadianGuy Well, then you completely missed the point of the show and the character. I highly advise you to watch the show again. The show's creator would probably be disgusted by this take on Pete. Nearly EVERYONE in the show is worse than Pete. Especially past season 2. The whole point of the show is that Pete isn't the villain. He's just a normal dude with a lot of insecurities and problems, like all of us. You're not Don, you're Pete.
Whoopsie DayZ
OK so he came up with the idea of turning Joan into a whore cuz deep down he’s a good guy?
"One trick pony"? He is so humble. Good actor nevertheless.
Great voice.
I'm uncomfortable with how much of myself I see in his character.
that's the point
Yikes
yeah, i agree, more of us are Pete than would like to admit (thx The Take, "We are all Pete Cambell" was an insightful video essay)
Follow Vincent Kartheiser's new film BEACH PILLOWS at facebook.com/beachpillows and twitter.com/beachpillows.
I LOVED the whole charleston scene. It made me fall in love with Pete. :)
it's interesting how he loves Jon Hamm in real life as much as on the show.
he's very humble, which is nice to see.
also, the 'he probably ate a bullet long before then' had me like :O
He is sooo hot especially in season 1
Yes!
Oh hey, Connor.
snillocgrom he was so good I'm angel♡
Would make a perfect Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow.
You are so right!
He’s going to be Scarecrow in the Titans series on HBOMAX
Wish granted
Haha, he's sucking up to Don and Roger even when he's not in character
wonderful actor , very humble too.
Love Vincent, always.
Wow so humble ! Great actor and here he seems to be a great person too.
You did a fantastic job !
He's hot
yes, he is :3
I honestly have so much respect for Vincent. He portrayed a character who I didn't like from the beginning. I found Pete to be a childish prick. As the series progressed, I started to like him. Vincent played the part so damn good. A truly remarkable character. Probably one of the best minor characters in a television drama.
Great actor. His character was such a worm.
I loved Pete the second he walked in in season 1 and insulted Peggy for no reason. All joking aside, Don was the devil. But the line of good and evil … something something all men. Some Russian insight there
very honest person he is I think
Vincent Kartheiser is a class act. Pete Campbell is the man I love to hate and hate to love. It's funny that Kartheiser said that Campbell probably "eats a bullet" because he could be a JR Ewing-level villain (if the writers give him a chance).
Happy birthday vincent from italian boy live in rome
I wanna see Pete live in Kansas honestly.
Peggy and Pete both characters grown exponentially, over the period, with every new season....
Superb actor.
great man!
Pete bounces back so hard in mad men. I loved how all the actors grew beards during their off seasons. That’s what happens when men are required to shave their face for work, school, etc. lol
Haven’t had a smooth face since the military, I can vouch for that.
The misalignment between audio and video quality is something else on this one.
Beautiful man. Amazing actor.
Pete Campbell was 26 in 1960, so he was born in 1934, he would have been 78 in 2012
Oh my god, he still sounds the same as he did in the 90s. Fuckin love this dude
he talks the exact same! damn for some reason i thought he'd talk different in real life but he just naturally talks proper hahah
circasurvive04 I absolutely love his voice. Wish I sounded like that hahaha
To me, a great actor is one who can make you hate him, and love him. While “Roger” became my favorite “character”, Pete Campbell earned my respect as a character who “grew up”, and made it believable! Listening to Mr. Kartheiser, I have to respect him for admitting to immaturity (I’m in my mid 60s, retired military and retired law enforcement) and I have to admit to immaturity now and then. His admission to being human, makes him a more admirable actor.
Agreed- Roger was my favorite but Pete was right up there- great. Overall, one of the all-time best tv dramas - ever. ❤
THE KING ORDERED IT !!!
Such a gorgeous man. Love his blue eyes.
I adore him!
He's so beautiful without his beard!
Yes, he's beautiful to look at, for sure
@@lisamariepagliei3945 with or without the beard he is gorgeous.
If there is one character that I hated at first and loved at the end.. it was this guy.
I first started watching MM when Colin Hanks (the priest) was on. I thought they were the same actor. I couldn't figure out what was going on.
Hells Bells, Trudy!
Today vincent 45 years
He can dance!
Genuine actor
Vincent is a great actor.
What a great way to end the interview hahaha
I would like to see something where we see the characters in modern times
After watching Pete loves Don I like to hear how real actor loves Jon Hamm too...
they have!
He's my fave. I relate to his misunderstood brilliance. Lol. JustSaying... or women...
One trick pony I don't think so :) He is talented and I hope we get to see him in more series and films.
I love how he said "he's gREaT" and shake head in such a Pete way lol.
He should do Masterminds again with Patrick Stewart 😂
when?
ME TOO!
Hell’s bells Trudy!
"He probably ate a bullet long before then " that was funny : )
Betty and Peter are my favorite characters
The king ordered it!
A thing like that.
Don’t forget he is a great dancer!
