So I’m new to the planted aquarium community, but have been a fish hobbyists for 20 years. I currently have a 40 breeder, with vallisneria. I made sure to have the proper substrate, I put in root tabs, liquid fertilizer, iron and have 4 juvenile African cichlids in the tank. Im routinely checking water parameters. Ph 7.5-8, ammonia 0, nitrate 0, nitrite 0. My Val are not growing fast, some leaves turning red, some turning brown, I keep the light on 40% brightness for 8 hours. Not sure what im doing wrong, any tips?
I have 10 planted tanks. Tons of growth in each and the only plant I can't keep alive is jungle val..So, I wouldn't be the best help with this plant. But I will tell you that I've heard (I haven't validated this) that val can be sensitive to fertilizers. Best of luck, let me know if you figure it out!
i tried soil once before , i dont know what i did wrong but most of my plant died, the ones that didnt grew really really slowly. I've seen md fish tanks use pond soil, maybe that would work. Do you think something like JBL AquaBasis Plus would work? its basically dirt but fish branded, maybe then ill have more success. I clearly did something wrong because it seems to work great for a lot of people.
Those different soil types could work. Straight soil has a lot of nutrients that can spoil the water if there are not enough plants to absorb the excess nutrients. These other soil types have less nutrients so that you can plant less and not have those issues. So which type you should use depends on how heavy you want to plant
Sound advice. It amazes me when I see aquatic plants with dead or dying leaves still in the tank. I think it ruins the aquascape (let alone the algae issues) as it is the first thing my eyes see.

I couldn't agree more!
What kind of dirt to use?
I either use my own garden compost soil or I buy organic potting soil.
make sure you use super glue gel
