I am surprised that you didn't include Dan's fish in Montana OR Arizona aquatic gardens. They are both excellent and have massive selections. AAG has been around 30 years and grow all their own plants. They also carry lots of different fish,mostly from domestic US breeders.

I just got 4 Gold Laser Corydoras CW010 from Aquahuna yesterday. One of them was dead and I think the ammonia level was elevated. The other 3 are doing fine. I took a picture and submitted it for a refund. $12.00 for this species is very reasonable and cheaper than I have seen it anywhere else. Their shipping cost is reasonable too.

So what was the customer service with Petco like? You mentioned some of the fish arrived deceased, but you didn't tell us what it was like getting a refund?

Heaters only use power when they are heating... If room temp. is equal or greater than the set point of the heater, it uses ZERO power... But if your central heating malfunctions the heater will kick in and save your fish... I don't understand why it would make sense to remove the heater...

i guess my tank is not heavily planted when theres multiple species of absolutely massive anubias and swords creating a whole roof top and a dense jungle in the back of the tank, only leaving less than a quarter where the light reaches down to the bottom and thats just where my cories can enjoy themselves and dig around

Do you do any DIY pond filter building? I have a large pond and I’d like to build a filter for it, but not sure where or how to begin. I am not good at building things.

How about not having a heavily planted tank? Watch scuba vids. Most lakes and rivers aren’t packed with plants. My betta tank is the only one I have with plants

For as long as I can remember my tanks are bare bottom, no plant tanks. To me, plants just make a mess. My goldfish eat plants any way. I grow algea on the back of my aquarim so the fish can snack. The female tank have a 3x3" patch of algea where they lay their eggs. No plants. My goldifsh live with no plants unless you count the algea. They are healthy.

When it looks like 50% of the swimming space is filled with flora then it's heavily planted. If the entire substrate is covered in grass and the entire surface is covered in floaters it's still not heavily planted.

How often should I add crushed coral? Weekly?

i think ive heard cory from aquarium co op or father fish say 1 inch of fish per 12 inches of plant thats the rule i always follow but even that is not heavily planted just a great rule to follow

I have a couple tanks I consider heavily planted and I also hear the "heavily planted" comment. Only to see 4 plants. 😂 As someone else commented, until there is a standard set that states"% of plants=heavily planted" it is what it is. Thank you for the laugh!

It is so funny as half American and half European I live 50/50 on both continents and when an American say heavily planted a European would call that a dessert but that is nothing try to get a European over the age of 5 to have plastic plants and/or castles/toys that is not happening, so do not invite a European aquarist and expect to be met with respect ofc the Europeans are to polite to say anything bad but they would seriously wonder when and what went wrong for you. When I lived in the USA still most people said "You cant see the fish there is to MUCH plants and when I came to Europe they said "Adam you know floating plants do not really count but I am sure you are trying...hopefully". But the main thing and as a biologist many other things in the tank benefits so much from having many plants, for fry, to induce spawning, water chemistry, bringing out the colors and behaviour of your fish, oxygenators, detoxifiers, microfauna a neon pink plastic plant do not do that. The only biotope would be the three great African lakes where that sparsely tank would be acceptable or maybe jumbo-sized South American cichlids and some other odd biotope styles but for 90% of tanks out there there is often to few plants, it does not have to be anything fancy just plant/buy the easy stuff for a healthier and more stable water chemistry.

There needs to be a planted tank percentage that everyone agrees on to be classified as “heavily planted tank.” But, that would be wishful thinking! 😅 this fish keeping hobby has so many opposing opinions on every tiny detail that it will never happen. 😂 What would your % be Andrew?🤔😊

Yeah, I can say my tank is close to heavily planted, and it really looks like a super forest... Only a few small patches for my cories to dig in some sand .....

Great video Andrew, with the heaters I very much would like to eliminate all of them but my fish room is in my basement and gets cool. I have transitioned over to more cool water species to eliminate the heaters but my Oscar and Fahaka not sure if I could get away without them. Great tips throughout the video 😁👍

The shallower dirt is good advice. I've done that in some tanks for the very reasons you gave. Also, I have six tanks and everyone one of them has houseplants growing out of them. I would never again have a tank without houseplants.
