    Ian, I don't know where you've been hiding, but you're demystifying shit that's had me stymied for years. I'm exceedingly GRATEFUL (haha). Keep more of the Dead stuff coming, please. There's no one on the net teaching this stuff in such an accessible way.

      Peter Friedrichs Same here obviously Jerry uses pieces of the scales jumping back and forth between melodies and counter melodies but I knew there had to be a starting point with the root scales he was using and this guy breaks it down in less then 7 minutes! Subscribed!!!

    The kind of analysis you're doing with this song is teaching me how to break down my soloing options on OTHER songs as well. It's really opened up a world of opportunities for me to sound good within minutes. It's also taught me how to change up the vibe of a tune by employing different scales, major/minor/modes. Can't thank you enough, you're an OUTSTANDING teacher, and I wouldn't be as far along if it weren't for you. It's powerful stuff!

    Now that I'm getting more comfortable playing scale while actually hitting chord tones, it's so much more fun and fulfilling. For FOTM, I've been sticking with the E Major scale. I've had fun extending the scale a bit. The A note on the 10th fret of the B string fits well, and sliding up the low E string to the 14, 16, 18th frets is an easy way to add some nice sound. Thanks so much Ian for sharing such great lessons!

      yeah like how bands like the dead and phish jam from one song to the other that are completely different keys, like how do they make the key change together without someone being the first to go out of key until the others follow? its easy with songs that are in the same key or similar modes but yeah for sure.

    • @Danimal46

    Any particular reason why B major scale over the B instead of B Mixo? (and A major scale over A instead of A Lydian?) Was that just to keep it simple, or was that the way Jerry actually chose to do it? Or I am just confused and just because B is the 5 chord of E doesn't mean we're supposed to use Mixo...

    It’s a 1 flat7 chord progression in the key of B Maj. B Maj pentatonic and B Mixolydian are the main scales Garcia uses with an occasional Bb played over just the B chord for color. He’ll also use tons of arpeggiation and chromaticism from the chords of the B mixolydian scale. Technically the scale becomes A Lydian when played over the flat7 chord.

    • @StichMethodGuitar
      @StichMethodGuitar  4 года назад +1

      It’s a 5 4 progression everything else you say is correct but remember B Mixolydian literally means E Major starting on the 5

    • @jamielynn846
      @jamielynn846 4 года назад

      StichMethod Guitar you can look at it both ways.. I could tell by the way you play that you’re looking at it from an E Maj prospective. Even though the chord is not in the song it’s the resolve. It’s just much easier when improving to keep everything under the B umbrella. Street theory

  • @shipofthesun5315
    @shipofthesun5315 6 лет назад +1

    I have to point out that the chord-scale theory is incorrect. It should be B Mixolydian, A Lydian, and E Ionian (over the quickly passing E major chord in the choruses). It's best not to think of this a E major/Ionian all the way through because one would lose sight of the most important scale tones for each chord (root, 3rd, 7th). The Idea of playing Ionian over both doesn't really work, although it's notable that Jerry does play A# as chromatic passing tone in the final guitar melody.

    • @StichMethodGuitar
      @StichMethodGuitar  6 лет назад

      We’re just talking about the simple method of changing scales with chords in this idea. Although what you do mention is how I teach but , I think of E Major all the way focusing on chord tones of each chord. But Jerry mixes and matches this stuff all day long.

    • @shipofthesun5315
      @shipofthesun5315 6 лет назад

      Cool. Actually, I don't think he mixes and matches stuff all day long. Jerry's playing is pretty well grounded in chord-scale theory in the traditional way that was being taught in the early 1970's at Berklee by Jon LaPorta and Jack Peterson. In fact, Jerry studied with Howard Roberts who was into similar thinking, but on the West coast (he helped found GIT).

    Great tip/trick. Definitely colors up the solo on this track. Can you explain how this works though? This song is in the key of E, therefore an E major scale (or B mixolydian) should work throughout. However, the E major scale differs from the B major and A major scales because of the A vs. A# and the D vs. D#. The 1, 3, and 5 of the A major chord (A, C#, E) and B major chord (B, D#, F#) do fit in the E major scale but the D note of the A major scale and the A# note of the B major scale don't quite sound right because they are not in the E major scale. Could just be my ear, but something sounds off and when I resolve by playing the note in the E major scale, it sounds better.

    • @ScottLaneMusic
      @ScottLaneMusic 4 года назад +1

      Corey- I think Ian was just trying to give another simplified approach but you are right. If you just play the 1-3-5 note of the B major and A major scale you are safe. However if you want to use all the notes of the scale it would be B Mixolydian and A Lydian over those respective major chords. Peace..

    • @mikez4759

      I still don't understand how to solo over each individual chord using CAGED. This video says you can change scales with the new chord as the chord changes, but that doesn't always seem to work when the new chord scale notes don"t match the overall song key notes. Does Ian have a course that specifically addresses this?

      a major pentatonic scale is a simplified version of the major scale. just 2 notes missing. i personally use major scale runs when i want to sound more "floaty" and major pentatonic runs when i want to sound more "bluesy" can use both in this song

    would you be able to use E pentatonic as well or did i misunderstand a big picture item?

  • @dirkwolters2063
    @dirkwolters2063 6 лет назад

    How exactly does it work with the scales you play over the A and B major chords? You play the major scale over both chords, but shouldn't one 'officially' play mixolydian over the B, and lydian over the A? Otherwise not all of the played notes will be in the E major key.

    • @StichMethodGuitar
      @StichMethodGuitar  6 лет назад +1

      Dirk Wolters you can play E Major over the entire thing creating B mixo or A Lydian yes.... but also you have the freedom to play B Major and A Major as well because of the fact there is a lot of time on each chord separately creating a longer time to give emphasis to that particular chord. If the chords moved faster we could not do this, so when figuring out how to solo, not only is Key important, but time on the chord is as well. Hope that helped.
