    Sir, with due respect i want to ask the question that "if the purpose of that semi circular conductor is to collect more positive charges and be at high potential... then why we use the chrage tranferring belt here?? Why don't we directly connect that semicircular conductor to a positive plate of high potential???

    • @FortheLoveofPhysics
      @FortheLoveofPhysics  4 года назад +5

      Because you vl require a battery worth millions of eV to create that high a potential difference

      Those ions are lost in collisions with the walls of the acceleration tube and contribute to the leakage current.

    I don’t understand why we can’t use VDG to accelerate negative particles?
    If we place negative ion source at 0 voltage, than negative ions are accelerated towards V potential, as you said.
    Or why we cannot deliver negative charge to the terminal the same way and accelerate negative charges from negative ion source the same way? There are negative ion sources, right? Some beta-radioactive sources, for example

    A question: How do you get negative or positive charges on neutral atoms such as Neon or Helium.

    • @springwhite4085
      @springwhite4085 3 года назад

      I think the positive charge state is easy to get, just using a plasma ion source. While for a negative charge state, I saw someone using a sputtering ion source.

    • @gvrp2008
      @gvrp2008 Год назад +1

      The negatively charged ions undergo collisions with stripper gas/foil atoms and lose electrons to become positive ions.

  • @pandagineer1614

    Very interesting. I had no idea they were used as accelerators. So the rubber bands carry electrons from the dome to the ground, correct? My question is what prevents the rubber bands from carrying electrons in the other direction (from ground to dome)? Thanks!

    This is a little confusing with the 'positive' charges.. To my knowledge, all the positive charges are atoms that have lost an electron.. The positive atoms are massive.. Is the hollow tube that they are accelerated in a vacuum?

    • @gvrp2008
      @gvrp2008 Год назад

      Absolutely. They are under high vacuum end to end.
