My husband had an iliostomy 30 years ago it was difficult at first for him because he thought I would be turned off by the sight of it. I kept telling him he was as the same person I married at 19 and nothing could change how I feel about him. Ever. The best part of it he got healthy again. 20 years later he was diagnosed with large B cell lymphoma and needed a stem cell transplant. We went t MD Anderson in Houston for 6 months treatment. He has been cancer free for 8 years now. He never lost faith that he would be healthy again. And he did all this with only 1 kidney. He’s my miracle man.

My husband and son have chrohns. When my husband didn't know he had chrohns. He didn't know it ran in his family. The family never talked about it. We found out my son had it at 13 years old. He has to have treatments every 2 months. My husband colon bursted when we were married 14 years and expecting our first baby he was in the hospital for 3 months. After he got out of the hospital, he told me he wasn't a man and started to cry. Now I am a tough broad. So I told him to buck up buddy! I didn't marry him for his body. I married him because I loved him for his heart! I look at him and believe me I never played attention to his bag. We made another child after that. So he is a man and the love of my life! We are now married 41 years. I still don't see the bag but I see him. My loving husband. Life goes on and my kids and me support and live him all they know is he is dad but shits in a bag. So what! He is a good man! Xxoo

I'm into natural healing and I will tell you that Chrohn's disease is caused by a bad gut which comes from what we eat. If we eat a lot of processed foods they will destroy your gut. 70% of our immune system is in your gut. Anyone with this disease must eat only fresh cooked foods and raw homemade smoothies with fresh greens. Treatments are not good for this at all. I had an ex that had this disease since she was 16 years old. Once I showed her how to eat and gave her the proper herbs for tea she no longer needed medical treatments. The only people that benefit from treatments are the people that profit from our ignorance and give us all these meds. Our bodies are designed to heal any health problems we get but it's our food that it uses to heal with the vitamins from the foods. Our bodies will not absorb fake vitamins in bottles. Meat does not provide much vitamins like the meat industry wants us to believe. Again, they want the profit. They don't care about your health. Feel free to ask me anything if you wat to know something.

@@Capletonable my cousin tells me the same thing. If it were me I would try the diet. There are a lot of process foods out there. I don't eat a lot of process foods. My husband and son love lunch meat. I don't eat it. My daughter doesn't eat it. I never had stomach issues or bowl problems. I consider myself lucky. I eat differently than my family. It is hard when you live in a house with 4 adults who all eat differant. I am more vegetables and organic where my husband and my son eat rich foods. My weakness is chocolate and noodles! Lol! I do take vitamins. I like them

If you got AIDS through promiscuous and irresponsible sexual activity in the 80's, which I would imagine is highly likely given the bare bones description you gave, you most definitely should not be comparing yourself or giving advice to these brave people who are ill through no fault of their own. I worked the homosexual area of our city and saw what they did. It's a wonder they weren't all wiped out. I'm further guessing that keeping you alive has cost taxpayers millions over the last 30+ years, so thanks for that. If I'm wrong, please disregard. If I'm not, save the indignation. You should be ashamed of yourself for even commenting or putting yourself on the same level as these true victims of fate.

Dear Christopher, Everyone must be very proud of you. You are a warrior. My dear father had a colostomy bag after having rectal cancer. He lived to almost 90 years old. He had his colostomy bag while hiking the Grand Canyon with his Boy Scout Troop 3 times. He rode his bicycle across many states and camped across America with his motorcycle. He sang in a church choir and taught Sunday School. Absolutely nothing stopped him...he was an inspiration to everyone and my hero. He survived WWII as a navigater in the RAF. He was presented with the Distinguished Flying Cross. He remarked that he could survive anything after living thru the war. He immigrated to the United States after marrying my mother who was also in the RAF. He had his colostomy almost 40 years. You will continue to strive and accomplish everything you wish for. Like my dear father Desmond Connell Hughes...you are a true miracle and a determined fighter!! May God Bless you!! Sincerely, Debbie and Dexter-Dog in S. California. U.S.A. ❤👩🐾😁👍

In fact, in difficult places like this, when the person is not so 'fun', is a great opportunity to learn who are the real friends, and not know other new friends.

He was diagnosed with UC in 2018, lost a lot of weight, almost died in the hospital, lived in the hospital for 3 months, and was in excruciating pain constantly. It was the lowest time of his life, but thru it all, he said he would do it all over again because he met me =). I was his nurse and saw him at his worse. I fell in love with his ability to smile and be kind even though he was going thru such a hard time. We didn't start dating until months after he got discharged but we've been happily together since and will probably get married some day. =) I think he is a wonderful human being and if he had an ileostomy bag (which the doctors suggested him to get), I would love him all the same. He's been in remission for a while now and though every day is still a struggle, he's doing so much better.

I also had a colostomy after perforating and almost dying of sepsis. I was VERY self conscious about my bag and even had several people complain about “an odor” coming from me to my management which was humiliating. Since I was so self conscious I was very diligent in emptying and changing it. But evidently it was still detectable. When I was in college, on the first day of a new class I would introduce myself and tell the class of my condition even though I was terribly embarrassed just to get it out there and avoid any curiosity from them, especially since flatulence in a quiet room during an exam is not our friend 😬 lol. I thankfully was able to have it reversed after a year and a half, but I too grew as a person during struggle. I am very happy to see you embrace your new body as it is and help others as well. We are all unique and beautiful. Glad you have found happiness and success! Best wishes for you and your health 😊

I also had to have an Ileostomy because of Crohn's disease, i had my operation in 2017 and i only had about 24 hours of notice before the surgery, i didn't even know what an ileostomy bag was. When i woke up from the surgery i was actually happy for the first time in a long time because i had previously been in constant agony for roughly 5 months straight with each passing day getting worse until i was on the very brink of death. Living with an ileostomy bag was an inconvenience, but compared to the agony it was a breeze, 2 years later (2019) i was able to get a second surgery to get it reversed, the operation was thankfully a success and as of today i am living completely pain free and without a bag.
Looking back i don't know how i even got through it all to be honest.

I can completely relate. I am now 6 weeks post-op for my total proctocolectomy. I have Crohn’s Disease and had my entire colon removed. Initially the surgeon felt like it wouldn’t be so evasive. I was devastated when he called me back after the biopsy returned which resulted in everything being removed... devastated to hear I would require an ileostomy bag. It’s been an adjustment, but I know life could always be worse ❤️ We can always find the silver lining. Always! ❤️❤️

After 3 surgeries, I have had an Illeostomy (CD) since 1987. After the third surgery I was asked by a nurse to talk to a 17 year old HS football player who would be having the surgery the next day. Going to his room, at the age of about 23, pushing my IV setup was one of the hardest things I've done. The next day I sat with his family for awhile and answered their questions while they waited to hear about the surgery.
You never know who will you meet, who needs to hear your testimony. Im glad I ran across your video. Much love.

You obviously love and cherish your brother because he's important to you. Please never give up on your brother even if he's sometimes difficult or seems unhappy. Dealing with cancer or any life changing illness can be difficult for the person with it. They need to remember they are still the person they have always been: A brother, friend, husband, mother ...... Disease or illness doesn't make them any less important or loved and sometimes they need to just hear from those around them, that they are still loved for who they are. That the disease or illness doesn't define them.
I wish your brother good health, a long and happy life and that he knows how lucky he is to have your for family!

I was 24 years old in the summer of 1980 and like you, was a healthy young man, or at least so I thought. I was a high school math teacher and had just started graduate school. All of a sudden I started feeling bad, and like you, had lots of blood in the toilet. So I went to the local hospital and my family doctor was treating me, but I wasn’t getting any better. My mother saw my stomach swelling in the hospital and demanded I be transferred to Duke Hospital, which is a major university hospital in Durham, North Carolina. By this time I was pretty out of it, but I remember the surgeon saying they had to do an emergency ileostomy. I had the same visceral reaction that you did when I first saw this bag attached to me. I had a very rough recovery and almost died, but pulled through. At that time, either there was no such surgery as an oleo-anal pull through, or J pouch. So I had the ileostomy for 11 years, all the while teaching. Believe me, I had some dark times and I told no one. The only people who knew were my immediate family members. Then in 1991 I read about this new surgery that was available. That summer I met with a great surgeon, Dr. Bollinger at Duke, and I had two separate surgeries to create the J pouch and take down the ileostomy. Believe me, there have been lots of ups and downs over the years, as well as several health complications that have arisen because of that original massive inflammation which caused the removal of my large intestine. But now at age 64 I still have the J pouch. I met someone who accepted me completely when I was 35 and we have been together ever since. I think what you have done by coming forward and raising awareness and money for the hospital is great. Congratulations on your new and successful career as a vocal coach! Obviously you are very good at what you do. I first saw your video a few minutes ago, and I knew I had to follow you and share my experience.
