Saving for a csl DD at the minute. Any saving is good. Especially on the power supply witch is a ridiculous price. I was never going to pay fanatic full price for it.

You've just made me realise, the CSL DD spring doesn't even need power. The power supply is just a plastic box with brick in it, and the cable is made of liquorice. FUUUUUUUUUUU..........🤬
If I ever get a csl dd, I will definitely making my own power supply. 1 hour of tinkering + 10-20€ vs what fanatec charges seems like an obvious decision. Although with how locked down the fanatec ecosystem is when wheel rims are concerned in all likelihood I will go with something else.

One can also use a laptop power supply. Some tinkering is also needed but that’s a good 10 min job really… all in about $50 or so. A far cry from the $150 or the $100 premium bundle price…
Reality is you can just buy 24v 200w power supply for £10 and then cut and reuse original cable from original power supply...
@@togwilson you are right. It was significant simplification on my side with the assumption that if one know how to solder then also wire gauge is not an issue... There is however great comment from one guy below that precisely state what kind of plug you need to use so i still say it's easy to make it for 1/10 of that price (eBay one)

No, the firmware controls the power used by the motor and has only two modes, depending on which pins at the PSU are connected to +24V: one for the 5Nm and two for the 8Nm

I agree the pricing is very odd for the CSL DD but you can't say 2 power supplies are the same just by looking at the voltage and current outputs. There are many other parameters which could be different and could affect performance and/or reliability. I'd like to see someone do a more thorough comparison/teardown between the supplies before I was comfortable buying the eBay one. Hopefully, one of the other channels will do this and we can all get cheap CSL DDs with boost.
Why you wrote this? Are you electronics specialist? Of course, components into PSU should be best. But if you buy PSU well-known company (used one) you are barely sure it's enough. I'm right (it is really a rhetorical question)?
You do realize the PSU fanatec sells u is also a generic Chinese brand that isn’t even well known right? PSU has one job and that’s deliver power reliably at said specifications, and as long as your not buying unknown brands, I’m 99% the quality will actually be better than the fanatec one.
@@tomek1000 Thanks for the question. I wrote this because it is true and yes I am an electronics specialist and have been involved in the design of many power supplies over the last few years. I agree that if you buy from a well known company that you are more likely to get a good PSU but I didn't see anything to give me confidence in this particular one from eBay. I hope it is good because I would buy one to save all that money on a CSL DD.
@@CanadianStig990 Yep , I realise that they have just sourced a generic PSU but I would hope as a company that Fanatec put the PSU through some sort of qualification and design verification testing procedure and checked that it was indeed a good quality PSU. I do not know if this is the case though. I see no reason to assume this one would be better or worse than the Fanatec one.
@@____________________ok just the usual PSU stuff you can see on any youtube PSU review. Line and load regulation, ripple, noise, efficiency. Also maybe EMC performance (conducted and radiated), performance over temperature range etc.

Honestly for a power supply like that, half the price of what fanatec is offering is still a lot of money. You should not pay more than 20 bucks for that kind of PSU. Still tho thanks for the video. Maybe it'll open some eyes of fatantec's fanboys that keep defending of this steal like it's their own company.

Found one at a local electronic store for 9,99€ and just replaced the Pin connector for 0,50 cents. Also found one on Ali about a month ago. Havent checked since then tho there.
It's not rocket science. It's just a power supply. And if you cant find one ready with that connector, it is so easy to replace it with the right one and def way cheaper than fanatec is trying to sell it to you.
There are even psu's with amp and voltage controller build in so you can set it perfectly to your needs, you just need to get one with 180w or higher. I'm guessing these will cost around 20 to 30 bucks top.
All the components inside these psu's are the same. And 90% of the time these components are cheap. These will probably cost someone to make no more than 8 bucks and if you own a company you get the components even cheaper and yet some sell it for redicoulus prices.
If you got the money, pls by all means go buy the psu from fanatec and you wont have to be bothered with anything else. And also fanatec is not a company like Coca cola or Amazon, so you can actually support them if you like in that way. But that price they offering it to you its beyond crazy. Even with the "bundle" its way overpriced.
Yeah. There's no quality power supplies with 24V and over 7 amps available for 20 bucks. Cheapest quality ones I have found have been around 40-50.
Can I just use my old PC power supply which has 650W supposing it outputs 180W on the video card cable? F**k Fanatec for this!
I bought a $26canadian 24volt 190watt power supply from amazon, cut a 4 pin cpu power plug from and old pc powersupply and wired it as per an online diagram. Looks less diy than a server power supply and about the cheapest way to go

Everyone making a big deal out of the warranty like the Fanatec warranty even covers the UK after 14 days. From what I could find, the warranty policy for Fanatec is 2 years where bound by law which is only the EU and Switzerland. Fanatec's customer service is notoriously shitty anyways.
Seeing as it is a gpu style connector, can I just use my power supply to power the wheel base?

I’ve been thinking of getting one of these. Have you had any issues with this unit like running hot or hurting the dd pro just curious and looking for honest advice before buying it. Or do you think I should just buy the Fanatec one instead. Thanks and love your videos keep up the great work
I only used this PSU for a couple of weeks, as I also have the Fanatec Boost Kit PSU. I'm not aware of any issues using these third-party alternatives. There shouldn't be, the Fanatec PSU is nothing special, it's a standard power supply.

This is interesting, still not sure how I'd feel about warranty, are Fanatec really that dumb or ignorant they didn't think people would find this out? I suspect they are which is crazy!
My order isn't due till December so debating whether to cancel (again) and and push it back to Jan.
However I certainly wouldn't pay £70 for a 3rd party psu when others comment there are ones for ~£15, for the sake of £60 I'd would would rather get an official one and keep warranty.
@@togwilson I'm not so sure they couldn't see that a more powerful power supply was used other than the 90 watt one... That doesn't mean you couldn't use a good 180 watt replacement for the boost kit, as long as you are sure it is a good one (PSU's for computers have different qualities too, though the numbers may be comparable, a cheap dodgy PSU can give you lots of trouble). But if the base fails and has to be returned, hm.
@@brulaapgaapmeester8052 yeah, good point, certainly different grading on a PC CPU. Then there is coil whine which might be bad on a cheap one.
I'm not discouraging anyone not to do this to save money, I just think it needs to be a good saving to warrant the potential issues if anything goes wrong.

I also have a 'real' Fanatec 180 watt PSU, so I used this third-party one for a relatively short time, about a week. And went back to the original one. The Fanatec PSU is a pretty ununique, unbranded OEM unit.

One of the things that I have learned in life is never skimp on a power supply, its just not worth the risk, If someone is going to recommend a power supply they should do the correct tests, does it sustain the voltage under load, how stable is the current , how noisy is the voltage, what about magnetic interference etc etc , what about heat dissipation ,efficiency etc. If someone tested a power supply and i could compare the results with the fanatic supply, then i may consider, otherwise stick with supply from Fanatic. The Power supply is going to be there for years, not worth the risk for a few extra pounds and the risk of voiding you warranty.

I just bought 1 from a ebay seller in the UK. 92 euro $115 usd with shipping from the UK to TX. All reviews said it was recognized by the software. $115 to $178 from fanatec. Cheers helped me feel better about the purchase. I did have to buy a type G EU to American grounded plug. Was $10. Too easy. Had to do that cuz the US plugs were sold out and he wasn't getting anymore and had only 1 left. Mine!! Lol. Happy racing everyone.

Fanatec shipped me a csl dd with NO PSU even though I paid for the 8nm version. Looking at this £80 version if customer service doesn't sort it out soon.

@@SimRacingCorner after 7 days got a response saying it should have been in the box and to send unboxing photos, now waiting for a response to my pics of empty shipping boxes. Luckily I got a 5nm psu on fb market place last night to keep me going for now.
