Averaging ~100NM per day under sail in that sort of boat with your experience level is great, very well done 👍👍👍
Todd, the solar panels charging the batteries might not have been the best, but the oldest form of solar power was working perfectly (wind is generated by the sun, so sailing is a form or solar power 😁)

Oh wow, what a nice surprise… we were anchored next to you at Ft McRee and invited you to the fire. Glad to see you had a good first crossing. We made our first crossing a few weeks later on the exact route and back. We had a lot of wind and waves there and back. The nights and lack of sleep are no fun. But the journey is worth it. Safe travels! S/V Orion Beneteau 46

There is a saying, Sailing is easy, Experience to know what to do is not.
As you spoke out what was happening, and explaining why you fell off coarse to keep speed, talked about the ship, spoke about offshore being the real deal, you were gaining that experience, doing things right or wrong, and soon will be confident in you decisions.
Good luck. I sailed those waters a lot in the 70s and 80s and survived, keep up a good attitude.

You got to identify things you still need to get sorted for when off shore. But you made it work , no point I'm putting it off forever.
The first 48 hrs are always the roughest of any offshore trip which sadly is often as long as they are.
    You got this

Taking in a reef in the main first while flying the full headsail is fine. As a matter of fact, dropping the main and sailing "jib and jigger" (using just the foresail and mizzen) is a handy configuration in moderate conditions, and can let you keep at least 2/3 of the headsail unfurled to let it have better shape for close reaching (roll in more than about a third of the headsail and the shape will be too baggy to draw well to weather, so that's about all you can effectively "reef" a roller-furled headsail). I'd be very happy with 5-6 kts in those conditions.

Super proud of you! You've come a long way. In addition to never traveling with the motor on the dinghy while on davits, we highly recommend you never travel in the ocean with the dinghy on the davits. We ALWAYS lift our dinghy on deck, upside down when traveling in the ocean. Seas/winds can change unexpectedly and if a wave climbs into your dinghy the added weight would be a disaster.

The cheapest marine diesel in the Tampa area is at The Harborage near the Port of St. Petersburg. If you're used to big city marinas, you'll be right at home, but it's not for everybody I guess. Very convenient location near restaurants though. People say that Marker 1 Marina has the nicest amenities in the whole region, including all of Tampa Bay. It's further north in Dunedin just very slightly north of Clearwater in St. Joseph Sound, accessed by the inlet between Honeymoon Island State Park and Caladesi Island State Park. They're open all week every day 0800 to 1700 Local which is a bit later than some in the area. They have 90 octane and diesel. Fuel prices are a bit higher there than further south from what I've heard. Like around a dollar more per gallon. Of course they have member discounts. It just depends on your budget and what you can live with. Plenty of folks love the city marinas, so there's nothing wrong with it in my opinion.

You may already know all of the following: The first 2-3 days (48-60 hrs) of overnight passages are the worst for sleeping , grogginess and seasickness. A qtr aft to abeam seas are the worst, if possible, sleep across the beam of the boat with head in the direction where the waves are coming from. Other- don't drink coffee or carbonated beverage, if you need liquid try flat gingerale. Saltines, ginger in any form (sticks, snaps etc) and avoid spicy foods. Oral meds (sleepy is a bit better than seasick) medicine patches, regular wrist pressure seabands and electronic wrist seabands.
On a completely different topic- Dolphins- some think they turn their body/heads to see you/communicate, and they like riding the bow wave. I've toyed with the idea of making a hydrophone/underwater speaker device on a stick that you could submerge in water at slow speed and hear the clicks of the dolphins and allow you to speak under water. No idea how the dolphins would react.

What a perfect introduction to cruising! Y'all pass with flying colours from that mighty mast. I have just one small suggestion which is that you wouldn't usually be bothered with harnesses under those gentle conditions but if you feel safe by wearing them then you go right ahead ! Actually, I'm one who has little faith in those ķind of safety rails because if I have to be up there on the forepeak in 45kts. @ 0300hrs trying to discover why.the roller furling has packed it in I want to know that even when I get swamped by a 20ft. sea mountain there's a substantial rail to keep me aboard the boat. You could also use it to clip a harness onto! Yes, I know about the centreline rule for rigging jacklines but are not rules made to be broken?

Great work! I was getting worried when you didn’t post a vid last week. Re: ditch bag, always pack everything in it early - like the Garmin Inreach - as when / if the time comes to ditch (ie. Fire), you might not have time to pack / re-pack. Also, plenty of water. Swimming to a life raft, being out in the sun, or anyone vomiting will need lots of water.

I have that arch.... Wobbly as all heck when the seas kick up with a dinghy on it. I broke two bolts on the port side one night offshore had to resecure and reseal.. not impressed. Many of my clients add kicker bars to them. But mine had issues with the motor off. My dink weighed 150. Reality is offshore passages and that dink goes on deck strapped down on top of the motor. Anything less and one day your luck will run dry. Neptune will snatch that dinky and there'll be little you can or should do about it. The good news is winches are much more efficient that a 6:1. Davits are great for keeping growth and pirates off the dink. Even good for a light sail in calm water. Worthless for offshore work.

Tammy please understand the last thing a mariner on a commercial ship wants to see you do is change course. You have the right of way and if in doubt hail the vessel and express your intentions to pass port to port or what ever. Suddenly changing course makes the other vessel unsure of your intentions. If you receive and transmit on AIS both vessels have the same info and will watch each other. If minimum distandce is 2 nautical miles neither vessel needs to change anything and a mariner on watch on a commercial vessel will expect you to maintain your course. When in doubt hail the other vessel. As you saw you were aware of the other vessel long before you could see it. Good luck and enjoy the adventure of sailing around the world.

First Big hammerhead I ever saw about 12 miles out from Tampa when I turned northwest towards Panama city. The waves were on the starboard bow about 5 ft high and the big fish was riding a wave to look in the boat. I'll never forget that curious fish in tha crystal clear blue water. Tampa can be a place of lots of lightning and storms .I learned to stay 15 or 20 miles offshore away from the lightning and thunderstorms. The lightning and storms break over land like clockwork in afternoon. Solution Stay offshore 15 or 20 miles.Get good phone rec even 20 miles out.All that Dramamine and stuff is like any drug-ithas side effects.I prefer to just be sick and get over it when I get my sea leg The diamine makes you sick too. Also bullfrog sun tan lotion gives you skin cancer. The old timers did not get skin cancer,.They wore white long sleeve. clothes if they had them and ate the fish from those tropical areas.Like "Grunts".Very tasty and easy to catch. Got both sails reefed and the mizzen up?? Yep!! you are doing good! Thats the way the pros do it.! Tankers coming out of tampa bay are really moving deceptively fast 13 knots or more but they stay in the channel. If you are headed south you will cross that channel at 90 degrees. No problem!! Its NIGHTIME and tankers that can cause REAL problems. All the lights can get confusing at night because a sailboat sets LOW on the water...Those tankers and container ships have a whole different view than you do.You ae looking at things flat on a plane ,They see them 3D. I'm not saying to trust them.I'm just saying they can see alot better that you if they are looking.LOL I suppose if they are lookin is the question. I used to carry an illegal stroke as a last ditch effort.Better to be alive with an illegal strobe light than dead and legal. I once stayed up all nite worried about some light on the horizon.Turns out it was a antenna 40 miles away.It was on the chart I should have noticed. The water you guys are entering can be so clear as to see a fish or shark 150 ft down clear as day. Yea you get down there to Venice and you are in the tropics!! floating coconuts and sea turtles and parrots!! Have fun!

People är ok going in cars and meeting lorry's in 100 miles a hour 3m apart. But neads 2nmile apart from a cargoship at sea. 2nm is ca 3-5min if you go he'd to he'd. And you only hava to go 20m to det out of the way. It's always god to ceep a safe distans . This is only to put som perspective and cam your nerv.

Rest assured the Gulf of Mexico is a Real ocean. Plenty of sailors have periled from the gulf. Please take this seriously and not as a vacation.

Why are you kidding yourselves about your ability to go off shore? A panic attack over a ship passing kilometres away? Hate to think what will happen if something really needs to be thought through. You need to be able to think when the unexpected happens ,and it will. Why aren't your kids standing watch? They seem to do nothing except scowl and lie around. You need a serious reality check. Not pleasant words, but someone needs to tell you that the overwhelming impression is that you are terrified and don't want to admit it. You got a sleep deprived man out of bed because you wouldn't trust your instruments and were in full panic mode. Get off the boat! Sell it. I seriously doubt that you will ever be prepared to stand a watch,at night,in adverse conditions.

And yet here I am doing it and enjoying the sun and sand. Everyone starts somewhere. If we waited until we were comfortable we wouldn’t get anywhere or learn anything. You watch 30 minutes of a three day passage and pass judgements like this… I think you’d be happier watching something or someone else.

In the RUclips creator community we refer to this sort of comment as a troll, keyboard warrior, armchair quarterback and worse. Good on you Tammy for taking time to respond to this in a mature manner. Me, on my boat/my channel, I would have taken his advice and put my boat up for sale…. LOL, Wait, I meant I would put up the sails and show the barnacle naysayers what success, tenacity and perseverance looks like!
Cheers to you and your family for completing a task that most people wouldn’t even consider!!

We can all play this game of assuming we know everything Davey....I'm guessing your in your mid 40's, have no friends, work a meaningless entry level job usually staffed by high school age teenager's, consume mostly pizza and Mt Dew and live in your elderly parent's basement. No doubt you've excelled at an impressive selection of 'Sim' Style video games and Magic the Gathering that has given you keen insight on how to spread your vast wisdom in youtube comments...I'm sure I speak for everyone on how impressed we are with your wisdom. I know, not pleasant words, but someone needs to tell you.

For what it is worth, I find bagels & ginger ale keep my tummy at ease in very, very rough weather in open waters. It just works for me. 🥯🥤
