- One of the Philippine Cinema's lost treasures, MARUJA was shown in 1967 which starred Philippine Movie Queen Susan Roces and Romeo Vasquez. A "Pilipino Komiks" serial , MARUJA was penned by the great komiks novelist Mars Ravelo and produced by Lea Productions. MARUJA is a romantic drama, a story of reincarnation and of great love set during the Spanish era in the Philippines. As of now, the movie is considered lost since no prints of this film still exist. For those still young to remember this movie or were not born yet when this movie was shown, I somehow recreated the movie through this photo montage with the original theme song sung by Ric Manrique, Jr. as background music.

Paalam Maruja... I was 6 years old when I watched this movie... so pretty, so demure, so lovely, so kind-hearted Ms Susan Roces. Great star for all seasons..RIP🌹🌺🌹
This movie is considered lost, dahil wala na nga makitang prints nito. Palagay ko nakasama ito sa nasunog noon sa Lea Productions. Kaya, ginawan ko na lang ng photo presentation with the original theme song by Ric Manrique, Jr. as background music. Sana nagustuhan nyo kahit kulang sa materials.

I, too, would like to watch again this movie. I was only 8 yrs old when this was shown in manila but i was allowed to watch it in the movie theatre. I really, really liked the movie, the period setting, costumes, story.

Sana iningatang mabuti Ang ganitong pelikula na supposed to be a treasure in movie industry.I heard the theme song by Rick Manrique.I closed my eyes and tried to do the song ,duet style,and good for m y memory and lucky for me I completed the song.I am 67 years old and will be 68 soon.
Maruja movie by Susan roces wayback since 1967 was shot in our ancestral house of my great grand parent...it was one of an old house on Spanish era...

@jiminiroski Cristy didn't kill herself. When Cristy saw the very old Gabriel, he finally died proving his promise to wait for her is fulfilled. Maruja's soul left Cristy's body to join Gabriel's soul (shown again as the young Gabriel) fulfilling her promise to return. She lost consciousness & when she regained her senses, she didn't remember anything. Perla Bautista and Luis Gonzales led her away. The souls of Maruja and Gabriel went to their old meeting place to spend eternity together.

Sayang na sayang tlga na wala ng kopya ng orihinal na Maruja(1967). Hindi pa kc uso noon ang isinasalin sa VHS o DVD ang mga pelikula kaya siguro kahit ang mga artista na gumanap ng mahahalagang papel sa pelikula nila ay walang kopya. Eh ang bigat ng 35mm film roll at kung wala nmng projector, d rin mapapanood. Ngayon na uso na ang DVD, harinawang may mga kopya ng mga makabuluhang pelikula lalo na ng mga multi-awarded films d2 sa Pilipinas at maging sa ibang bansa.

@jiminiroski Kakapanood ko lang kanina nito sa TV. Taga US ako napanood ko to sa Cinemaone. Ang ganda kahit 19 years old lang ako hehehe mahilig ako sa mga lumang bagay. Naalala ko yung mga video na dinirek ni RA Rivera. Parang yung Music Video ng RadioActive Sago, na wasak na wasak.
Maganda ang kwento pati ang awitin bagay na bagay..ngunit ngayun ang telon ng pinilakang tabing ay nakababa na.sakanyang pagpanaw ay isang ginintuang alaala ang kanyang iniwan.sa kanyang mga tagahanga at sa buong industriya ng pelikulang tagalog.

@tauruswarrior Cristy did not kill herself. When Cristy arrived and saw the very old Gabriel, the man died and his youthful looking soul left his body. Maruja's spirit left Cristy's body and joined Gabriel and yhe lovers happily went into eternity. Cristy fainted when Maruja's spirit left her. When she awoke, she didn't remember anything and was led home by her sister (Perla Bautista). That's how it ended. I remember clearly because I saw the movie 7 times.

It's very sad kung totong nasunog ang film copies of the original Susan-Romeo Maruja (1967). I saw this 7 times when I was young. I have been scouting for a dvd of this classic to no avail, yun pala it's lost forever (?). For once, I am forgeting my values...SANA MAY MGA PIRATANG DVD na noon bago masunog ang Lea Productions.

I went to video 48 3 days ago and bumili ako ng copy ng Gumising ka Maruja.. but before that nag tanong ako if may copy sila ng original na Maruja, wala daw.. tas ayun nga may nag sabi na nasunog daw ung original copy.. na stress ako ng bongga nun.. sana buhay nako nuong 50s para napanood ko ito nung pinalabas ito nung 1967 :( willing din ako to pay kahit mag kano and if its possible na meron pang may copy AND sana before i die mapanood ko ito.. kung hinde mag hihintay din akong 100 years makanuod lang :-D haha (seryoso ako!) -.-
Hahaha! Natawa naman ako sa iyo, Joy! Sabagay, maski ako hihintayin ko ang 100 days mapanood ko rin yang Maruja na yan. Meron namang remake, yung kay Carmina Villaroel at Rustom Padilla, pero ang daming ayaw dun, gusto yung original na Susan Roces-Romeo Vasquez starrer.

I'm still hoping na meron pang kopya nito na nasa abroad, di pa lang nadi-discover. Kasi, some of the lobby cards/movie stills dito ay galing sa Flickr, mula kay Emmanuel Canteras na kung di ako nagkakamali galing sa US. That means ipinalabas ang "Maruja" sa US. And that means baka meron pang nakatagong rolyo ng pelikula somewhere, or merong collector na me hawak nito.

Thanks. Actually, I can't remember how the movie ends. I was in grade school when the movie was shown. But I can remember the komiks novel and its ending. I think the director of the movie really followed the story in komiks.

I am a big fan of ronnie Poe and susan Roes, napanood ko iyang Maruja twice lang dahil aywa pumayag ng mother ko ng manood ako na walang kasamang matanda, I even encourage my lola to go with me, it is really a nice movie and I am relly looking for a copy of it nagbakasakali lang ako sa internet baka me nag up load hoiw I wish I could see it again. I can not recall all the incidents but what I remember , it was a reincarnation . . . please if somebody have the original copy of that movies please share with us.
Maruja is Susan Roces and Susan Roces is Maruja, you cannot separate the two because they are eternal beauty, timeless and ageless. It is such a big disappointment that the future generations cannot see the beauty of it. I for myself would like to have a copy of Maruja. Even if there is going to be a remake, it will surely pale in comparison to the original as they always say nothing beats the original. I wish 8 could have a copy of Maruja. Raddy Reyes

@jiminiroski Maruja didn't kill herself after she wed the governor general. She died of heart failure, an illness she developed during her long wait for the return of her childhood sweetheart Gabriel who was cast away by her parents 10 yrs before.
Before the wedding day, Maruja went to spend the night in Gabriel's villa where their love was consumated but only after "marrying" themselves in front of God. Highly emotional but it didn't need a BED SCENE to emphasize their great love.
@jiminiroski In the 1967 film, Maruja died of heart failure. Siguro iniba to get away with parallelism ng Romeo and Juliet story. Naging more impressive kasi it showed the effect of Maruja's faithfulness in waiting for Gabriel to return after they left the villa 10 years before. Believe it, sabi ko nga 7 beses ko ito napanuod sa sine na may bayad....ha ha ha. Kung 2x ko inulit tuwing panood, it means 14 times ko napanood ang buong film. Can't watch 3x kasi 3.5 hrs ang film ...LOL

The remake of this film starred by Carmina Villaruel and Rustom Padilla suffered in comparison with the original film. However, if you want to see the remake, it's still available in Viva Films. The "other" Maruja (Gumising Ka, Maruja) by Lino Brocka has been shown (and replayed) in Cinema One. Just wait for their replays.

@feb2492 The original 1967 film was shot in Eastman Color. It was unique at that time kasi black& white pa ang standard movies noon.

jiminiroski: hello po now ko lang po nabasa yung comment mo po, sa totoo lang po una ko pong napanood yung Maruja nila Carmina-rustom, nagustuhan ko po yun nuon dahil kakaiba yung story pero nung naging aware na po ako sa original.. di po kataka taka na nag suffer nga po yun sa comparison dahil iba.. iba talaga yung original eh iba talaga pag ang nag iisang SUSAN ROCES na talagang haixt.. now ko.lang din po nabasa na si mam swanie na nag confirm na talagang nasunod yung original copy ng Maruja. Walang existing copy nito dito sa Pilipinas. I think kasama ito sa nasunog sa bodega ng Lea Productions. Sana makakita ka diyan ng kopya, kahit beta copy, kahit malabo, or putul-putol. Siguro dapat mag-ala Indiana Jones ka, baka sakali ma-unearth mo! (he-he!)
@jiminiroski Yes, it is the song that Susan sang in the 1967 film. The piano version was also the backgound music in many parts of the film kaya nostalgic talaga.
