Buddy of mine who owns his construction company was giving me some advice when I told him I needed a new career. He said in a downturn, you don’t need the carpenter. They can always cover a broken window with boards. You don’t need the builders, people just won’t build. But you will always need to flush your toilets and power your refrigerator.

yea i just got kicked out of my place that had some favoritism. i did good work, had months more time at the company over other apprentices (some of us were 7 months, some 4, some 1), and always showed up early/on time. apparently seniority nor quality of work matters when some guys dont get along with you/dont work well with you.

I was layed off over a dozen times during my attempt to graduate. One of the sitting members of the review board asked me where I belonged and I said 'where ever you send me' haha. Of course I asked other members why they would ask me that and they tell me it's their job to assign you not ask you where you should go but then that comes down to where you live or where you grew up. I was upgrading lights to 277v at a fire station when one guy realized I didn't grow up in that city. Next thing I knew I was layed off again. An address change was difficult for some reason at least for me. I worked with journeymen that lived in tents but an apprentice can't change an address without some hassle? Eh oh well.

I’ve been a non union electrician for 6 years and been laid off about 3 times but I’ve always been able to find work at a new company. I once found a job 18 hours after getting laid off. Also there is a bunch of temp agencies that work with hundreds of electrical contractors and they can quickly find work for you.

What I try to do is keep my basic living requirements (ie. rent/mortgage, utilities, food, etc) if possible at what my income will be with unemployment. This will allow for putting money aside for a rainy day while also allowing for planned purchases (ie. big kid toys 🛥️).
Additionally, each local has its own procedures for filling job calls. Some locals do it by phone calling those in the “out of work list” while others require members to show up in person to be dispatched. In LA to be able to take a call you have to be there in person that day. Otherwise your skipped giving the opportunity to work to those with higher numbers than you in the out of work list. But again each local is different and that is driven in part by the size of the local as well as what the membership decides is fair.
