    Side note: how is not knowing one specific person’s OC a knock against a person as a fan of a franchise? Lots of people are fans but not heavily involved in fandom, or may even be extremely involved (like Jenny) but the internet is a big place and not everyone is going to know all the little goings on about a fandom. Let’s say even if this guy had a big following in his circle of fandom; why does not being in that circle of fandom mean she’s not a “real fan” of the franchise? Even if we were to accept that there were “fake fans”, not knowing about a fandom element doesn’t make you less of a fan of a franchise. The “logic” of the argument is baffling to me.

    Many con attendees (across all cons) are socially awkward individuals and mansplaining, negging, gatekeeping, purity testing, etc. are some's way of interacting and conversing. Seen it so many times. I totally understand people's annoyance at this and I'm not excusing the behavior. At the same time, though, upon encountering one of these individuals, I would caution against immediately assuming malicious intent on their part.

    • @marzipan2555
      @marzipan2555 2 года назад +5

    • @gretafreitag2041
      @gretafreitag2041 2 года назад +1

      Intent doesn't matter. The affect is the same. And they know what they're doing to some extent, they are adults.
      And people never really do this stuff "maliciously", per se, usually just to make themselves feel smart/better at the expense of someone else. Which still applies in this case. People shouldn't be given a pass based on social aptitude, as many of the women they are gatekeeping are usually quite akward and nerdy themselves.

    • @indigo1296
      @indigo1296 2 года назад +2

      Going to lightly disagree with the responses, intent does matter. If someone is genuinely ignorant of the fact that they are bothering others and didn't intend on it, they are able to change once they are made aware. The original poster even made the point that they aren't in any way excusing their behaviour, but to point out that not everyone doing it is "hopeless".
      Becoming an adult only guarantees physical maturity, there are plenty of people who are adults that are still working on their emotional/mental maturity.
      That said, you aren't responsible for anyone's maturity but your own.

    • @user-lj5wy9hz2y
      @user-lj5wy9hz2y 2 года назад +1

      Intent is irrelevant. If a man doesn't have the maturity to understand toxic and sexist behaviour and he treats women and others that way, he should be called out. It's not anyone's job to protect his ego or feelings. If he is acting toxic and rude out of ignorance, it means he has been raised in a world that allowed him to have a stupid amount of ignorance about interacting not like an a-hole.
