    Great choice. Around 2001 ago I bought a 1987 W124 300E for my daughter.
    I drove it home from the seller.
    Never been so impressed with a car.
    Did nothing exceptional but did everything perfectly.
    It started me on a huge mercedes collection but I still have a 300E. 😁

      W123’s and W124’s were a peak in Mercedes engineering and reliability before a massive decline that they didn’t really recover from until the W212.

    Wow, there's a blast from the past. I had several 123 and this 124 Merc from new, stunning car.
    One or two tips, bonnet - on the hinges there is a leaver you push either side, then bonnet opens up fully. If sunroof butterfly and tube goes, it's a nightmare to change.
    Yours may have self levelling suspension rear, you can adjust ride height by adjusting link arm.
    Enjoy

  • @FrankKemperMuc

    A few fun facts about this car: 1. The side rear mirrors have different sizes and shapes - this is not a failure, but deliberate design. When Mercedes launched the W124, by default only the mirror of the passenger side was power adjustable, the mirror of the driver side was mechanical, because the driver could easily reach it. 2. Today the W124 is regarded as one of the most sturdy and reliable cars Mercedes ever built. When they introduced the W124 in 1985, it came with over 30 technical innovations - and was a menace. The singke windscreen wiper was a mess, the new, glued in front and rear windows broke and much more. It took Mercedes extreme efforts to make the car better.
    3. The predecessor W123 came with a height adjustabke driver's seat. However, the mechanism was part of the platform, and it was only on the left side of the platform. So all W123 with right hand drive came with a height adjustable passsenger seat only;-) The W124 got height adjustable seats on both sides.
    4. The W123 had a weird vacuum operated system which powered the door locks. It had a vacuum tank which allowed to lock and unlock all doors for three or four times until the tank was empty, so you had to start the engine and refill it. In the W124, Mercedes installed an electric pump to feed the vacuum tank. Why for heaven's sake didn't they use electric power locks like anybody else? They were too noisy;-)
    Jeff, congratulations for this nice car. I like them - but you'll soon will find out that the front seats are lousy. Maybe you should replace them with a set of decent Recaros.

      There is a log book that you must fill out when you drive. Interestingly you don’t chew in to the 60 days for any days that your club designate as events. So taking Harry to Berrima car meet up won’t burn a day

    • @DarrenMartin-bw8zi
      @DarrenMartin-bw8zi 3 месяца назад

      @@mlmoke And who makes sure he fills it out? Does he have to do it before driving or after?

    • @mlmoke
      @mlmoke 3 месяца назад +1

      You have to fill it out before you drive. It’s not tightly enforced, but if you got pulled over by police you’d get some points/fine if you hadn’t. Also the 3rd party insurance that the conditional registration includes would not be valid if you hadn’t filled it out.
      One side note, you don’t have to complete the log book for taking it to a mechanic, or short trips to check any work you’ve been doing on it.

I have had a 300CE 24 V Sportline from 1998 to 2001 and i have driven 100.000 km in one year. I think 95% of all parts are still avaiable. The best Engine was the V8 in 4.2 or 5.0 Liters, but also 320 are quick enough.

    Historic rego is fantastic, here in South Australia it’s 25 years. I recently picked up a 1 owner EL Fairmont Ghia with 129000klm on it, got it in Armidale NSW and did the 18 hour drive to Adelaide in one hit and it ran faultlessly. Happy days!

    Love this Jeff. The 124 Mercedes is one of the best. Bulletproof build quality. How many 30 year old cars with 400+kms will have paint and interior stay intact?

    Having an e280 s124, I can completely understand your choice. Easy car to work on and maintain for daily use.

    Great buy. I currently own 3 W124 cars with mileages from 200km to over 1,000,000km. Fantastic cars! Looking forward to see you work on this on the channel.

    This was the last of the era when Mercedes were built for reliability. Since 2000, they are designed to barely last through a lease period. At one point, they built all cars with biodegradable plastic electrical harnesses that all ended up scrapped.
    In the 60s-90s, Mercedes were cars people bought for reliability and huge mileage, but the advent of leasing and cheap debt ended all that .

    Wow dude… mega miles. But these are built so well. I think you’ll love it as a daily. Absolutely ripe for a swap with an inline six.. Will make it so much nicer to drive and hardly any thirstier. You need to check all the suspension bushes as you won’t be able to tell from just driving it if they need doing.

      For the time being, as long as it keeps running I don't need another project. Thankfully the previous owner just did all the bushes :D

    love it .. haven't seen a W124 with a Barra in it .. perhaps your daily driver really should have a local powerplant in it... for parts availability of course ;-)

    Jeff!! You definitely need to fit a 190E Evo 2 bodily to this car! 🙏🙏 If there is anyone who would get it right it’s you!!
