Same type of comet orchids are found in parts of Africa, East Africa (Rhodesia, Nyasaland), and the hawkmoth is there, also. The moth is Africa was named as a species, Xanthopan morganii, before the same species of moth was found in Madagacar. Since there is distance between the locations in Africa and the island of Magagacar, the moth on Madagacar was named as a subspecies, "pradicta". Darwin wrote that a great moth would be found, but it was Dr. Wallace who exactly predicted that it would be a Sphinx moth like, Xanthopan morganii.
