- Back by popular demand! OK...no demand but on past views and interest, relatively popular. Another comparison video looking at the classic Buffalo Special 6 smock with a much cheaper alternative. The British Army smock. They look very similar but what about performance?
My back shock had pit zips/attached roll away good and a poachers pocket on the back, cost £30.
I own both and use the buffalo for colder weathers and my BA smock when its a little warmer. Both great bits of kit
Whilst an attempt in the right direction "issue tissue" means it doesn't cut it in extreme conditions whereas a buffalo or montane 6 will
You can buy the surplus army smock brand new at Strikeforce UK.👍🏾
Thanks....good bit of kit for the money.
You would have a windproof smock on top or gortex if it's raining
My Pusser's "Buffalo" has got zips in the arm pits. Apart from duty, I have also worn mine in New Zealand in the winter, and the Himalayas (both Nepal, India & Bhutan). Lightweight, warm, packable.
I have four Buffalo’s. Three smocks and the jacket version of the 6 ( also the mitts but they frayed and fell apart quickly). All brilliant although not 100% waterproof. My windshirt barely repels a light shower and I’ve had stitching issues on my lighter version of the smock (which in the end I had to repair myself). For me what lets Buffalo down is their customer service / after sales which is frankly, appalling. Many email attempts to contact them for repairs or to ask a supply question have gone unanswered, despite their website indicating they provide a response / repair service. It’s for that reason I’d think twice about ordering Buffalo again. Sad, because the product is generally great.
Thanks for the review, very helpful. Just about to order one of these - seems like a great option to have a relatively light mid-layer for hiking or the like that can be stuffed into the compartment of a rucksack if it gets too toasty. I like the idea of a Buffalo and I'm sure they're great - but at that price wearing a thermal shirt under the army one doesn't seem like a bad trade-off!
They're a good bit of kit but watch the sizing. The true size is one or even two sizes down from one's normal size.
@@blackdogwildtrails3123 thanks for the tip. The site I bought from seemed to reflect that - I thought the sizes were a bit odd, but they gave the rough chest measurements so all good in the end. I think it probably follows on from the philosophy of trying to use it next to the skin as the Buffalo is intended to be used, as much as that might not translate very well to reality.
I think the zips up the side just above the waist actually have a dual purpose: First, to allow ventilation, as you say. But second, to allow access to a sidearm if carried in that position. Sidearms are generally carried on the webbing/vest/plate carrier, but I imagine they didn't want to deny easy access to it for those that decided to carry it on the hip. I have a jacket which has zips in the same position explicitly for that purpose.
@@blackdogwildtrails3123 By the way, my name is Fergus - the list of dogs that share a name with me is steadily growing! I see from your latest videos that he's recovered well and going strong. Glad to see it. Tell him I said "hello."
@@TheQuantumPotato have you gone up a size like he said in the video? Im planing to buy one of these
@@SileDevil I stuck with medium (my normal size), as I only wear a thin thermal base layer under it. It fits when used like that, but it is quite snug. If you’re planning to wear anything else under it I’d second the video’s advice and recommend going the size up.
The Buffalo is a smock/jacket the Military one is a shirt designed to be a lightweight under garment. The two cant really be compared against each other only in design but not the same use. I'm Military Infantry C/SGT I have the two of them. Both great garments but both have different uses. Great vid though...
have you got a channel Dai?
wrong the buff is a shirt ,its designed to be worn next to the skin
@@billrand4138 that's what the website states, but wearing it next to the skin then you get too hot which you will, you'll then need to put a T on. The whole idea of the layering system is to vent not take off a Buff then put a T on when you get too hot. Just my own opinion though.
@@dvdstry well obviously you need to take the weather into consideration with any piece of clothing, but buffalo is 100% designed to be worn next to skin. If you wear a buffalo/montane extreme with baselayer it will be just a "normal" jacket but worse.
Good video - Very thought provoking, when buying outdoor kit if you buy cheap you are buying twice!
Some decent kit there. It's amazing how the price inflates. I've had the same gear for ages. I shall have to wait for a windfall until I get something new in. Cool shelter. Mark
I guess things like a Buffalo Special 6 are expensive but they will last a lifetime. The Army Smock is a good alternative but not as warm or versatile and a lot cheaper.
@@blackdogwildtrails3123 Yeah, I still have old fleeces I ware from an age ago. It's not about fashion often.
1:51 Outdoor what?
you can buy new from Survival Aids, and in MTP.
