    We continue our exploration of director-style AI in AAA titles as we head for the mountain ranges of Kyrat and take a look at the systemic design of the Far Cry series.
    Opening Track:
    "Knights of Cydonia" by Muse.
    Black Holes and Revelations, 2006.
    Inspired by the 2014 Game/AI Conference talk: "A Manifesto for Systemic Gameplay".

    I'd actually argue that Far Cry 2 is a much better anecdote simulator than any of the sequels since it doesn't let you get massively overpowered a handful of hours in and waltz over everything. The dynamic fire and explosions created top notch chaos that just spawning in more animals or patrols doesn't match.

    Any chance we can see a Arma 3 AI video? It would help dispel a LOT of myths about the AI that circulate around the game.

      Sabre One The AI in ARMA 3 is barebones for what is needed. Now Rising Dragons AI are interesting because they follow tactics like bounding that ARMA's AI never gets close to.

    Honestly ai wise FC3 and subsequent releases are too predictable. Enemies keep circling around the camp even though 2 of their comrades just got shot in the head. In Far Cry 2 even if they don't know your exact location they will come into the direction the shot was fired from. They will actively hunt you. Also smaller things like trying to rescue wounded comrades and actually driving over you when they get the chance instead of stopping 5m in front of you to get out the car (and get killed by doing it). Another thing is the fact that in FC3 and onwards the ai goes back to its routine after some time even though comrades got shot. In Far Cry 2 they stay in their cover positions.
    This all makes the ai in Far Cry 2 way more believable and sophisticated than in any other games after it. They will draw you out with grenades. Every single enemy not just the ones that are designed specifically for it (like in 3, 4,...).
    Far Cry 2's ai is made to challenge so it has to feel dynamic you, Far Cry 3's is made to entertain you so it has to be predictable.

    • @bginley97
      @bginley97 4 года назад +3

      You're an idiot if you think Far Cry 2 has better ai. Its just lazy coding programmed to aimbot you and stop you from being able to shoot back. Wish I had the time to make fun of all the people who liked this comment but my malaria is in the way.

    Definition of Insanity: _the state of being seriously mentally ill; madness. extreme foolishness or irrationality._ "
    Albert Einstein Quote: _doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results._
    Now if that was true, I'd be Insane then since I'll throw myself at an enemy, in the same way, 100 times in a row. Because I know that one of those times - *I will break through*, through sheer determination.
    Nyoo! Don't shoot the *Tigurs!*
    7:17 Unfortunately *I am*.
    I really really liked Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon as that was the only Far Cry game I gave a damn about playing - *And it was Glorious*.

    Hi, Tommy, it's a bit too late, but... Just curious, is it possible to see the difference between simple finite state machine and HTN-based planner or behaviour trees just playing the game and observing AI routines? E.g. you don't see an enemy is doing this and that, so you're 100% sure it's finite state machine under the hood and nothing else.

    • @AIandGames
      @AIandGames  7 лет назад +3

      It'd be kind of difficult to prove that to be honest. Circumstances that guarantee a FSM was doing something versus a HTN would have to be pretty contrived. I guess the only outcome you could assess is the frequency with which particular sequences of actions take place. Given HTN's macro actions are very specific sequences. Even then, you'd need a rather contrived example to pull this off in a game. The only way we could do that on the channel is if I sat and made a demo environment to show off in say UE4 or Unity.
      Much of the benefit comes from performance side (rate at which we're polling the FSM or HTN for decisions) and the ease with which it is to design. A good comparison could be made of trying to generate the same behaviours in both types. The more complex it becomes, the HTN would have more networks of varying sizes, while the FSM could quickly become rather convoluted due to the number of potential states it would need to address.

    The STALKER series address the characters within player range issue with what they called Offline ALife. Not sure how much of more clever that is, but in theory all the game NPCs are roaming the whole game all the time.

    • @mark009vn
      @mark009vn 7 лет назад +1

      Stalker's offline state is fairly simply, basically every object in the game world has an offline state that it'd switch to once the player is outside a 100m radius (the object would still exists even if you moved to a different map, although I've no idea how the game managed to keep track of them) This is why when you throw away an item, that item will stay there indefinitely unless they somehow get bugged and fell off the world (and even then they'd STILL exists). NPCs behave the same way, when they come offline their AI routines switched off and are essentially frozen (although some basic routines would still be active to give the AI the impression they are still "alive"). Interestingly, because NPCs doesn't despawns when they come offline, if you are far enough to trigger their offline state but still within line of sight, you can observe the NPCs in their offline state.

    • @ncshuriken
      @ncshuriken 7 лет назад

      @Mark009vn: So all the objects remain accounted for by the engine, indefinitely, regardless of proximity? Damn, I guess that explains why the game always took about 15 hours to load lol.

    The way Ubisoft transformed Far Cry in a quickly boring, casual, no challenge mess with 3 and 4 is just sad. Now it's just a CoD game on easy, wasted story potential and with an open world.

    • @wislinv8089

    • @silversolver7809
      @silversolver7809 5 лет назад +1

      Caesium, I see it the other way around. I think Ubisoft learned from the mess they made of FC2 with their 'Play it this way, or no way' design. No surprise such a limited design sold far fewer copies than 3 or 4.
      3 & later provide much more opportunity for a wide variety of players to enjoy the games. If you're a beginner, the game is accessible on easy using all the weapons etc to their full effect.
      If you're a hot-shot, then don't drive vehicles, don't use grenades or launchers or sniper, trigger all the alarms, etc etc. In other words, make use of the tools the game provides to be enjoyable for a wide range of players, rather than a limited audience who fit some arbitrary profile like 'hot-shot' or 'spray n pray'.

    • @silversolver7809
      @silversolver7809 5 лет назад +1

      @@wislinv8089 FC4 has an improved UI, altho it's still very poor-but that's better than FC3's straight-from-console UI.
      FC4's travel is better with the grappling hook & chopper & jumbo, for times you don't want a long hike-much more verticality in the world makes it more interesting & tactical. Various other tedium-reducing things, eg auto-craft syringe. Wildlife better in FC3, but chopper is THE big difference.
      FC4's story is a lot more interesting. Doesn't mean it's 'better', anymore than a novel is 'better' than a comic. But it's likely to appeal to a wider demographic with its grown-up themes. Same with the villain, interesting complex evil guy vs way-over-the-top-comic-caricature.
      Oh yeah, didn't FC3 have Quick Time Events? I don't recall, as QTEs are something I need to block from my memory to protect my sanity. Fewer dumb trippy trips in 4, & you can make lunch during intro-you gotta play it in 3.
      FC4 has fortresses + Arena, bell towers are less annoying than radio towers. All in all, 4 is a much better 3.

    That's what I think Skyrim needs, a linear narrative

      Game Job What exactly do you mean by that? :)

      Well something like a main story with a beginning, middle, and end with cutscenes and drama and what have you and probably something that you have to do and not choose to do. Skyrim has the civil war thing but it just comes off as another side quest and also it is not something you have to do like another side quest. The main quest I think should have cutscenes, plot twists, love, hate, etc, etc, and it should be something you have to do. And then you can have your cool side quests to get lost in.

    Check out Rain World. Such a beautiful game with a living world. There is lot of information on the Tigsource devlog.

    Will you make a video on STALKER's AI? I heard they used something like a global AI too.

      +Rain Gloom STALKER is on the to-do list. It's one of my more common requests.

    Dude this is a ten minute video. I just watched 2 minutes of some junk I've seen a dozen times before already, and now there's a prolonged song-and-dance credit sequence? I'm out.

    After Far Cry 2 Ubisoft started to dumb down everything. Far Cry 2 was a lot more detailed and immersive than any Far Cry since.
    Edit: Yeah, the game was also a mess. But still. In terms of detailing, it has become ridiculous. Fuck Ubisoft and the way they insult players intelligence.

      There's a tiger companion in FC4 & FC Primal.

    The way Ubisoft transformed Far Cry in a quickly boring, casual, no challenge mess with 3 and 4 is just sad. Now it's just a CoD game on easy, wasted story potential and with an open world.

      Shame, I heard FC3 was really good, and FC4 was almost as good, but if its just some rinse and repeat, no brainer FPS just in a pretty island enviroment I think I'll pass. I loved FC1 (granted, I played it when it was new, when I'd never seen any game like it, ever) and enjoyed FC2 a lot too, even though they tried to go in a more realistic direction (I preferred FC1, how it started off with "realistic circumstances", so to speak, then really far into the game it goes all sci-fi fantasy). Driving around Africa felt amazing back then but I replayed FC2 about a year back, and all I can say is that the game hasn't aged well.

      Turn off all HUD elements and restrict yourself to only knife skill upgrades (i.e. stick with 2 health bars, no detection indicator, no minimap, no wallhack camera) and it gets pretty intense.

      If you're a hot-shot, then don't drive vehicles, don't use grenades, trigger all the alarms, etc etc. In other words, make use of the tools the game provides to be enjoyable for a wide range of players, rather than a limited audience who fit some arbitrary profile like 'hot-shot' or 'spray n pray'.
