Shea: From Nuts to Butter

  • The sequel to Shea Butter: From Tree to Nuts
Created for Malian National Television, this video teaches rural Malian women how to make improved shea butter. (Local production techniques result in a shea butter that cannot be exported. New techniques and the formation of cooperatives allow women to export their butter for a profit). The production was shot in a rural village in Mali, West Africa. One woman teaches another how to improve her practices in order to make export-quality shea butter.
To see how the nuts are gathered and processed before making the shea butter, see the prequel video, "Shea: From Tree to Nuts"
The video has been aired on ORTM, the national TV station, and used in training events in Mali. The women in this video, Minata and Afu, are part of a new cooperative that is now selling their shea butter for a profit.
    In Bambara with English subtitles.

Notice how so many people asked how to buy from these women directly and they were never given an answer. Also over the course of 3 days they were wearing the same spotless clothes. If this was a true source where we could support them while they worked like that..we would have had an answer in a half of a second if the person that created this video had a care in the world.

Kaylynn Rose well in Africa, we wear work clothes Those are her work clothes. Also we wash our clothes everynight before going to sleep and hang them up to dry until the morning. Hence why they are clean. The person who posted this video just wants to show people how its made. She's not a shea butter trader.

***** Thank you. I don't know why people assume that if you don't have a big city lifestyle, or machines to do all your washing for you-- that you are DIRTY!.... These women live the way ALL our ancestors did in the past. They build a fire to cook. They take water from a well or a river to take a bath or clean their clothes. And they wash their clothes by hand, hanging them to dry EVERY day. And they are NOT lazy about it. In the past, a wife did not need a "money paying job" like a husband, because she worked her fingers to the bone just to keep her home and family clean and fed. That alone was a full time job. Some women did extra things like this, making butters or perfumes, or making rugs, pots and clothes to sell... But you were considered to have serious and valuable skills and talent if you could do something like that. Most of the women just cared for the family. They were plenty clean, because they did what they had to do in order to stay clean. It was harder than what we do now, but they still did it.

I'd rather pay these ladies directly. I'm sure they don't see much of what you pay after the cosmetic companies take their share.

Lauren Simonelli you're totally right !! i had the same question while i was watching this video " do they get enough money ? "
can you tell me how can I contact them directly, please ?

It’s not really that expensive , especially when you take into consideration how much labor goes into making it .
I just bought 2-1/4 pounds of it for less than 20.00 and it was free shipping I wanted to buy the 5 pound quantity but the vender that was selling it only accepted PayPal instead of just a regular ok credit card.
I would actually spend more than what I paid .
