    Slacker isn't "better" all the time, or for every rider. For those with a more traditional riding style where you steer with the bars, you may prefer the steeper head angle. For those who have a style that suits today's modern bikes, where you have to get over the front and steer with your feet, you may love a slacker head angle. I know I do.

      Agreed. I tried a 160mm Yari and ended up with 66° hta and steering when in flat sections was a mess. The bike tends to go sideways all the time. Had to shorten to 130 and swap wheel size to compensate a bit, it was a great change for the better

    I did the same to my Transition transam 29 and holy, it was worth it! Went also from 67.5 to 65.5 (static) with the works -2 angleset. It‘s so much better in every way, even uphill its more stable and the slightly steeper seatube helps also. Only downside is the shorter reach but other then that i can recommend this to everyone!

    Nice video I did the same experiment on my kona unit 2 degree slackset but then I went from 470mm a-c on the rigid fork to 543mm on the yari I have now.
    The bike is awesome now but very different.
    Apart from getting all squishy and floaty in the front I have a real slack seat angle, great for singlespeeding and I think the shorter reach makes it more playful. Bottom bracket is probably higher now also and I think that also changes the feel of the bike and puts you more "on top" instead of inside.
    Thanks for all the entertainment and also all the super valuable information that helps people understand what they need in a bike!

      Edit: Increased the stack 13mm further with the external headset cup. The bike rips on the downs now but still has some zing and nimbleness. Maybe a lighter fork would be better in the long run but I kind of love the monstertruck feel I get from the Yari 120mm.

  • @markkligerman6861
    @markkligerman6861 4 года назад

    Steve, great video! I really appreciate your take on how the degrees changed the bike. Some of the cornering improvement could be from lowering the bottom bracket. Do you know how much lower it is? Did you have any pedal strikes? Did you have to time your pedaling in chunk?

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  4 года назад +4

      The bb isn't any lower. Remember how the lower cup is thicker than the one I replaced? It made up for the 7mm drop of slackening out the head angle. Even if I hadn't used the thick lower cup, my bb would have only dropped 3mm, which would not be noticeable, and my seat angle would have steepened by 0.35*. Not a significant amount.
      The steering difference is due to the head angle. Head angle affects steering more than anything else.
      Typically I prefer a lower bb. This bb doesn't feel super low to me. I had zero pedal strikes. I'm good at timing my pedals anyway, but one other bike I'm testing right now had a noticeably lower bb and I do strike my pedals from time to time.

  • @50yearoldmtber37
    @50yearoldmtber37 4 года назад

    Awesome review!! Can you tell the wheelbase has increased? I have a question about the reach, couldnt you slide the saddle a little farther back on the rails to gain some reach? Wouldnt this slacken the seat angle a bit?

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  4 года назад

      The wheelbase grew less than an inch. I might be fooling myself, but i did feel like the front wheel was a little bit more in front of me. just a little though.
      Moving the seat back would affect the effective top tube length, not the reach. Reach is the distance from the bb to head tube. That doesn't change with seat adjustments. Reach is only felt when standing.
      Moving the seat back would slacken the effective seat angle, which is a negative.

      I'd definitely prefer a slacker LES myself. Between that and the chameleon, that'll be tough. I'd probably go with the LES with a 66* HTA, as the chameleon sits at 67.5*, and it feels too steep for me. 64 isn't too extreme, bit it's going to make an already short reach even shorter. I recommend finding the tallest riser bars you can for that bike, the stack is insanely low.

    How does the slacked out dv9 compare to your old steel middle child with trail chatter and suppleness on the trail?

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  4 года назад +1

      If you watch my initial review of the dv9, you'll see where I talk about how stiff it is.
      The Ibis absorbs chatter better than a steel mc, but not better than a ti mc. The steel mc is really quite stiff for a steel bike. I wouldn't describe it as "supple." The ti frame, on the other hand, is super comfortable.

    Seat angle same? Doesn't slackening head angle also slacken the seat tube?

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  4 года назад

      nope, not always, and not in this instance. Check out my previous video where I show the process of making it slacker (and check the comments on that video, there's some good info in there).

    Thinking about doing this to my trek roscoe 7. The frame geo is crap but I can’t afford to get a new bike right now. I love to ride hard and I really abuse my bike. I’m 160lb 6’ 1”. Would it be a bad idea for me to slacken my bike out by 2 degrees? Is there a good chance I’ll break the frame?

    • @michiganstate149
      @michiganstate149 4 года назад

      Probably not going to break a aluminum frame like that. They are XC/trail bikes, but heavy/overbuilt frame wise.

    My steel 27.5+ has a very similar geo to the DV9(at least what bikeinsights.com is showing me) at 69deg rounded up, but with a rigid 51mm(vs 48 for the DV9 on bike insight) fork offset. You know have me thinking about trying this for my bike, but not sure how the fork offset will affect thigs. Thinking maybe going 1degree offer some of the improvements you mentioned?

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  4 года назад

      I have a 44mm offset on my DV9. I don't feel a HUGE difference between the 44mm offset and a 51mm offset. What problem are you trying to "fix" on your bike?

    • @mellissanash7517
      @mellissanash7517 4 года назад

      @@hardtailparty I am not sure what I am trying to fix other than your review had me mostly sold on this. You make it sound fun. I take the 51mm offset kind of makes up for slacker ha or no?

    Seems to be like nearly the perfect bike, simply switch the head angle kit to fine tune the ride to your own riding style.

      Agreed. For charging hard I prefer a little heavier bike, but it's such a great bike.

      Yes, thanks for your patience. These videos take a lot of time to film and edit and I like to ride bikes for a while before reviewing them. It's still coming, but I have about 15 videos to get out first.
      I still need to try the paradox with plus tires before I record my review. I'm almost ready to film it. It's going to be a review worth waiting for, that bike has some really unique aspects.

      @@jshomper8291 probably a good thing too, as stack lowers ever so slightly when you go slacker. In my case, stack would have gone down 7mm.

      HTP, as you noted in the video, the cups are taller, so you need to consider that if you don't have extra steerer length to play with when upgrading to the Works.

    what did your wife make of it? was she able to tell the difference? my guess is a big no. i've slacken mine to about 5 degrees and nothing happened to the perception of riding. too much hype about the hta. I think that manufacturers have to think of something to make people buy new staff.
