Hi, we have a 2014 110 Defender which is our car and pull an Adria caravan with it. We had a long wheel base 4x2 Sprinter camper for 8 years before. I’m sending myself nuts looking for the perfect vehicle. I’m sure you found there isn’t one. I’d love a 4x4 truck, but fuel costs are shocking and I think it would spoil travel if you can’t really afford it. The Mitsubishi Fuso seems the best compromise as their 4x4 is v good off road, but still only 14-15 mpg. I think we’re going to end up with a 4x4 Sprinter - less able off road, but not bad and decent mpg. V expensive in the UK used. Happy travels. I won’t be selling the Defender though, it’s my baby.

That ending sentence 😆. It's difficult because of everything that is available today, we see all these amazing setups. As we now clearly know what we don't want when traveling, it's easier to get on with what we need to compromise.

Good honest talk, thank you. For us we'd consider a Bruder EXP-6 which matches the tow vehicle width but definitely not as inconspicuous as your car only set up. The EXP-4 doesn't have any internal living space. Or we're considering the Unimog implement carrier U 535 which is the smallest of the 'truck' range or IVECO Daily. Plenty of exploration companies use these chassis including Unicat and Earthcruiser, etc. Also for our needs, we want to stay away from urban areas and use e-bikes to get into towns when we need. Good luck.

Good move sticking with the Defender, such a capable and rugged vehicle - if you come here to Australia perhaps you could even tow an off road camper which is a great way to see the country. Safe travels - enjoy all your videos! Warren and Colleen, Queensland.

Thanks Warren & Colleen ! We're happy with our choice and would also love to explore Australia with it :)

Vans seem to catch a lot of wind. Cross winds blow you all over the road. Big trucks take a lot more room to turn and fuel mileage sucks. Personally I think your ride is best.

For the moment we also think our car suits us the most regarding the pros and cons of other vehicles and setups, and also regarding what we’re okay to compromise (personal indoors space)

Good conversation, because of our age my wife would love a Sprinter camper van but our old Cruiser with a roof top will have to do I’m way too cheap

My dream for not go big Truck was an old Pinzgauger 712 or better /16 or Volvo 304 (just because both are little beast 6x6 less 5 meter long) or dreaming big a Land Rover forward control but still remain a dream because in most part of italy cant drive less Euro5 cars...

Car all the way, the places you can get to far outweigh the supposed advantages of a larger truck or van, I've said before that the only negative I have is that I can't stand up in mine (only a problem when it rains). For this I am drawn to slide in/flat bed campers for pick ups. I would not look at anything bigger than a Troopy.

Agree with that even though I’m sure there are also many advantages to have an indoors camper setup but for the moment don’t feel it’s worth the disadvantages we see

I can build you a Iveco 4x4 with polyester box in the size of 5 meter and 4 person (not a double cab). You have a mini Unimog with all the profit of a truck and the size of a large 4x4 Landrover Defender, but a little bit wider.

After seeing the Iveco I think we’d go for bigger than that if we decide to go bigger than our defender :)

Some vans are very capable. I see them on trails I’m surprised they can go on 4x4 or awd

Don’t buy the Mercedes Sprinter, buy the Achleitner Mantra 4x4. They are very capable off road.
