Hello! May I ask you something? This might be a bit lengthy, so please bear with me.
Are you finding it hard to integrate into Norwegian "college" society? For instance, do you struggle to engage in conversations with people when you are at your dorm? Do your Norwegian flatmates speak Norwegian to each other when you're around, and if they do, how does that make you feel?
    A little backstory:
I am a Norwegian student, and we have an exchange student from Spain at our dorm. However, she hasn't learned or made an effort to learn any Norwegian since coming here. As a result, we usually speak Norwegian to each other because it requires far less effort than speaking English just for her benefit.
Relatively speaking, Norwegians are less outgoing and social than people from other nations. You will rarely see Norwegians randomly striking up conversations with strangers or intruding into someone else's social group. Similarly, we are not very "inviting" ourselves. Of course, there are exceptions, and people do make friends (hopefully you've made some). But I hope you understand what I mean.
    Conclusion:
Have you found it hard to become part of Norwegian social and friend groups in your college?
Do you find it difficult to converse with Norwegians, and do they prefer speaking Norwegian with each other rather than English, leaving you standing there without understanding what they're saying?
How do you feel when your flatmates are speaking Norwegian in front of you?
Have you made or are you currently making an effort to learn Norwegian while you're here?

      Wow that was lengthy 😅
      To answer your questions:
      1. Just like you said, Norwegians aren’t very open or “inviting” so I have zero Norwegian social or friend groups. What I have is a community of international students like me who are warm and welcoming.
      2. Yes, although sometimes they try to speak English if the subject matter concerns me otherwise it’s just easier for them to communicate in their language.
      3. To be honest, unbothered.
      4. Yes I’m learning a bit of Norwegian, I know some words and can construct and understand basic sentences. I’m aware of the importance and I’d be ignorant not to make an effort to learn the language of the land I’ll be spending at least 2yrs in.

Hi Aisha, thanks for the kind words. Unfortunately medicine in Norway isn’t taught in English, for most schools but you are welcome to explore for options. Visit studyinnorway.no
