      Like others said, you've got to remember, it's a Lotus, meaning it's light weight! This model was considered the heavy model for Lotus, and even still it weighed 2930 lbs. Compare that to a 2019 Honda Civic, 3010 lbs.

    I own one of these! Even though I've had offers to sell it, I will never sell it - and yes, it is as fast it says it is. I also have a Corvette C4 ZR1, lots of parts sharing going on with both cars, as GM owned Lotus at the time. The Lotus accelerates as fast as my ZR1 up to about 110mph then after that the torque-myster just romps away into the distance.

    The 2004 Lotus Espirit Turbo V8 still looks absolutely incredible as does this car. I am actually considering buying an 2003-2004 Lotus Espirit V8 next year. I have always wanted one and the price now is so cheap for supercar performance...why not? Plus with today's turbos you can really push a car like this well past what was thought possible back then.

    The esprit was such an amazing performance car. The interior actually looks pretty decent for a 31 year old car. The outside just needed a new set of rims and it would look completely at home on the road today. I love the monowiper too. I hope Lotus will find it’s stride and bring back amazing performance cars at a somewhat more reasonable price than the Italian or German competition.

      Woops. Meant track-wise. Civic Si is slow as hell for 0-60. Even so, I might have exaggerated. The gap between these sports or super cars from the 80s and 90s is very small when compared to modern vehicles (as long as it isn't a Hyundai Tucson).

    • @VcArena

      First off. Lets give you some Corvette facts.
      1989 the Corvette was still using the TPI 350. 245hp 1/4 mile 14.0-14.3
      1992 they started using the Lt1 300hp 1/4 mile 13-6-13.8
      1996 they stopped using the Lt1300hp- {Lt4 330hp 1/4 mile 13.0-13.2}
      1997 they introduced the ls1 into the Corvette 345hp typically ran 13.3-13.7 (slower than the grandsport because the ls1 makes power up top, vs the lt1's low grunt)
      1998 the Camaro and Trans Am got the ls1 rated at 300 hp 1/4 miles 13.3-13.7
      2001-2002 a few revisions to the F-bodies's ls1 made them equal to the Corvette. we got a better intake and a few other tweaks that bosted ls1 hp to the same 350hp that the Corvettes were making (rated at 310). with better gearing that the f-bodies had, some of us would click off high 12's bone stock. however, most of our cars, would still run 13.2-13.4
      one more engine that i should mention is the Lt5 which powered 1990-1995 Corvette zr1 This car was the only one that ran high 12's on average, bone stock. and for kickers, Gm had lotus to help create the engine. it made from 375-405hp (dynos show 420ish) those ran 12.5-12.8 @111-115 stock.
      quickest stock Zr1 lt5 ran 12.2@ 119mph
      so again, for 1989, that lotus was damm quick with only 264 hp, it will stomp lots of the cars i just went through, including, my 2001 Z28. you should probably subscribe and watch my street races, that way as soon as my 500hp 6.0 is dropped in, you can hear its first start.'
      if, not, just study a bit before you go on a rant with all the wrong info

    This car is responsible for the only scene in Pretty Woman that I found tolerable. ;)
    Also, the reason it was so quick for a turbo 4 banger was it's power/weight ratio which was only 11.1 lb./hp. To put that in perspective by more modern standards, it's basically the exact same power/weight ratio as a 1999 Honda S2000 and 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STi.
    Odd that in the review they claim it to be quicker than the Ferrari though. That car's power/weight ratio comes in at 8.51 lb/hp, so in theory, the Prancing Horse should have been substantially quicker if driven properly. Most test numbers I've looked up had the Esprit's 0-60 coming in at 4.9/5.0 rather than the claimed 4.5 here though, so who knows.
    Either way, it's still a pretty quick little car even by today's standards.

      No, it's because there's always been a strong market for 30 year-old cars. Think about it--- kids lust after cars, some grow up with the means to buy them, they all compete for the same remaining cars. Combine that with the Golden Age Fallacy and your opinion was already determined for you. 10 years from now, it'll be the cars made around 2000, and people 10 years younger will swear that they were the greatest cars ever. 30 year-old cars. It's a thing.

      @@TwoLotus2 @Big Motor Yep, didn't think of a front-mounted radiator with hoses (and didn't think it is actually possible, too), Motorweek's words weren't very particular. The way you described it makes much more sense. Thank you!

    I've driven a couple of these and the snap oversteer will challenge you unless you push them to the limit to plow through it. I am not joking when I say a Buick powered Pontiac Fiero is better. Almost the same experience but you'll get the notion sooner and rocket out of corners.

    • @pederfallbom
      @pederfallbom 6 месяцев назад +2

      😂😂 Tell that to the racedrivers that totally dominated the SCCA to the degree that they changed the rules so the ESPRIT was effectively banned 😂😂 Pontiac Fiero VS Lotus Esprit Turbo SE, thats a good one👍

      @@pederfallbom 2 years lateer and I have to remember what I was talking about :) If you have tires all day and a race team? You got it. If you are street driving in a spirited manner? Don't aim for a Lotus. These days a 3.8 swapped Fiero would not even calculate. The Lotus is obviously a much better platform, but has the same characteristics. I just sold my Spirit R/T with the original Lotus head and aluminum plugs to my friend for next to nothing, with the Bourroughs tool to do timing belts on those and 944's. I know the drawbacks of having something that sits because it's "exotic" and should be a moving work of art. I am one that rescues them when most would give up. I love air cooled Porsche's for what they are and hate the downward clutch pedal after 15 minutes. It's just my opinion. Tell me that snap oversteer doesn't happen on a street car that isn't cambered out eating tires like the Calsonic GT-R.

    Those are good performance numbers from a 2.2L 4 cyl. turbo with 264 hp.. Even a modern 4 cyl. turbo of similar size would need about another 100 hp to beat those numbers, like the Ford Focus RS or a Mercedes Benz GLA45 AMG .

      Yes and why is that? Very big and heavy cars with way more power than anyone needs.
      Colin Chapman always added lighness, then big "anything" is not needed.
